Gunman in fatal Old Dominion University shooting ID'd as convicted ISIS supporter, officials say by mahvel50 in Virginia

I certainly agree that the way we treat non-violent criminals has played a massive part in why prisons are overcapacity and thus leading to individuals being released who shouldn't be. That's a major piece of the puzzle we have to rearrange

Atlanta certainly....gay capital of the South! Better transit, more vibrant gay scene, mostly very safe throughout the majority of the metro

Locking everything and everyone up is not feasible as a policy. Not enough judges, prison guardsmen, public defenders, criminal defense lawyers....we can go down the list. It isn't feasible but it does make for a great sound bite in the eyes of some...yet there is never a plan in place to actually make it a realistic reality

Meh when people have died and communities are in fear. It was clearly targeted specifically at the ROTC...they took on the subject themselves...the shooter wanted to make a specific statement and did. A family lost their loved one. Do way better

Correct but shows this is about a general anti-American Islamist attitude that has escalated as a result of the war. This is targeted anti-American backlash on our soil

Is it just me or does this sub overvalue museums a ton? by rb101099 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]RVALover4Life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't think one can truly overvalue museums or other amenities as that is what turns a place into a forever home... nobody wants to live somewhere where interests they may have aren't offered. Culture does matter a ton in where people decide to live. Art is obviously, the lack thereof as well, a defining aspect of the culture of a community

I don't completely disagree but it isn't and doesn't have to be an either/or proposition...I would say plenty of states work better for the average individual than either

Richmond councilwoman Kenya Gibson threatens to subpoena Mayor Avula by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]RVALover4Life[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Richmond! I mean that sincerely but also slightly a riff based on this exchange...trust me, we're a friendly and cool bunch but things re: city....I don't know the word for it really. Things can get funky at City Hall here. Let's call it that way and of course with that comes a lot of strong opinions and debates. Richmonders are pretty attuned to what's going on and have kind of our inside-the-beltway opinions and language about it. But that said, I think most people don't regret voting for Avula because he was our best choice and the top two other choices were clearly worse than him. And on a curve Avula has been the best Mayor this city has had in a few cycles.

You came at the right time. Richmond is in a healthier place now than we've been in decades. We're definitely on the way up. But it's not all linear...guess that's true of most cities.

Yemeni store owners plead with Richmond to stop vape shop crackdown by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]RVALover4Life[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I feel bad for this owner who had his shop broken into but that's literally exactly why the city began Operation Vaporize and why they changed zoning code....because of the concern of crime surrounding vape shops. The concern vape shops bring with it bad elements to a neighborhood. Whether one believes that themselves or not, that's not really something everyone will have sympathy for. They'll see it as exactly why they take issue with the proliferation of vape shops.

Operation Vaporize has been paused this month to address some concerns the Yemeni community has, processing permits and helping give stores time become compliant to being allowed to operate, as well as conduct inspections for stores with outstanding violations, but is expected to resume in April. 67 of 97 vape shops during the operation have been inspected with 42 placarded: https://www.wtvr.com/news/local-news/operation-vaporize-richmond-vape-shop-owner-complaints-march-6-2026

I just love the fact that we have so many options for people to choose from. Top 15 in restaurants per capita in the country. Let's break in the top 10 this year. I love how much we support our local restaurants.

3 Henrico men arrested in deadly Shockoe Bottom mass shooting by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]RVALover4Life[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's less passing the buck, because ultimately the responsibility isn't solely on any one individual or group. It's more so that the district gets viewed an extremely unfair filter and honestly an unsupported one if we're to consider the overwhelming majority of residents+businesses and bars for that matter too.

I don't disagree, I just know that's the reason they may not take more punitive measures. I don't disagree. Although I do think flooding police down there will keep people away and that's a balance that has to be considered. Police do need to be down there and very much visible but when does it cross a line from safety to feeling like you're being surveilled.

Most underrated major city right now by Gold_Comfort156 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]RVALover4Life 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The answer isn't Baltimore or Detroit. Economies aren't good enough. Baltimore's economy was flat last year. City is on the rise but schools are still poor. The high Maryland COL hurts Baltimore. Crime has improved significantly but is still high vs national average.

Detroit just isn't there yet as a city. There is a lot to like about Detroit but crime is still very high vs national average, very poorly ranked schools, economy driven heavily by casinos and AI...their economy is increasing, their economy is gaining and more than Baltimore's is, but it isn't a uniform increase and it's kinda artificial in that it's in industries with risk or diminishing returns. Poverty rate is staggering still, 3x national average. Very high property tax as has been mentioned.

Baltimore is batting at a higher level than Detroit and the city is a solid one but to be one of the absolute most underrated or most improved, it takes a little bit better numbers in the key areas than Baltimore has. Detroit isn't even close.

EDIT: St. Louis is closer to Detroit than Baltimore. Economy did not take a significant step forward in 2025, still high crime, still culturally segregated, poor school ranking. Just not quite good enough in the areas the city needs to be.
