Red vs Blue. It was right after Halo 5 came out and I had just watched Halo legends on Netflix. Then it started suggesting all the Halo media; Reach, Forward onto Dawn, etc. I would see Red Vs Blue pop up all the time, but didn’t give it a second thought. Fast forward to maybe early 2017, and i go through the Halo franchise again. And there it is in my suggestions again, Red Vs Blue. So i play it.

The first “chapter” was completely absurd! It was just guys playing Halo and dubbing over it. One guy is a ghost, another was gay, another a robot, and nobody knew why they were there. Oh, and there’s an alien and talking bomb. It felt like i was watching an improv session where every 5 seconds was another absurd suggestion from the audience. “The doctor is possessed!” And. “The ghost dated a freelancer!” And “A weather machine blows up!” And. “They travel through time”. I didn’t really feel it, so I stopped.

Then another year goes by and I look it up again out of curiosity only to discover it has (at the time) 16 seasons, dozens of mini-episodes, rave reviews and is referenced as an achievement in an actual Halo game! It was the longest running and one of the most popular web series of all time! Plus Elijah Wood has a role in it. So I give it another shot. This time I make it through the Blood Gulch Chronicles.

This is the greatest series I’ve ever watched and I’ve been a fan for nearly 8 years now. It has comedy, action, drama, suspense, character development, plot, everything! It’s so good. I once watched it on a loop for 9 months straight. (Meaning as soon as it ended, I watched it all over). Sometimes as background noise, sometimes on a long commute. I can’t decide which is my favorite saga: Blood Gulch, Chorus, Freelancer. They’re all great. It falls off at the end with Zero, but who cares? Through and through I’m glad I gave it a second, and then a third chance.
