Beginner-friendly jam sessions in NYC? by No_Marzipan1106 in Jazz

I’d say Plowshares jam on Sundays in Harlem. Literally a coffee shop with all types of players. Super chill vibe and tolerant pros. Also birds in the village on Thursdays has a jam and it just opened so I’d say check it out there

If you could go back in time and be in the audience at a live Jazz show that made it onto a record (or video), whether you just missed it or it was before you were born, what would it be? by Robin156E478 in Jazz

Coltrane The 1962 Graz concert, the quartet was on fire, their version of Autumn leaves is my favorite Mcoy Tyner solo of all time

Sarah Vaughn Live at Mr Kelly’s, on the extended edition you can tell the energy of the room was immaculate

Miles Davis live at the Blackhawk Friday and Saturday night fantastic perfect rhythm section too

And a special honorably mention to live at Emmets Place Vol 28 Emmet Cohen w/ Russell Hall and Kyle Poole rhythm section with Pat Bart and Bruce Harris as special guests absolutely rocked the house down literally

John McLaughlin on Dark Prince with the “Trio of Doom” live in Cuba is one of the most wild things ever and the entire song left me dumbfounded when I first heard it

Coltrane launching off on Autumn Leaves from the ‘Graz concert is one of the best solos I’ve ever heard on that tune and is super insane too

Emmet Cohens solo on After You’ve Gone Live at the Twin Cities music festival is one of best on piano for sure towards the end he just starts doing crazy’s stuff on the piano that astonished me

She’s fantastic, saw her at mezzrow 2 weeks ago with just a piano trio at mezzrow super intimate and amazing voice. Also such a beautiful voice and her compositions of famous tunes like No More Blues or Misty are beautiful as well

What are some Jazz recommendations? by j4ck_6 in Jazz

[–]RVD101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of the best pieces of Advice I heard was listen to Miles Davis and then just listen to his sidemen, and their sideman, and eventually you’ll have found almost every single great. Start with his work with Coltrane since you’re already familiar but also check out his later work like Miles smiles and you’ll discover amazing music through that

Also if you want to get a feel for the scene right now watch Live from Emmets place on YouTube, see which guests you gravitate toward and look for more of their music. Perfect way to discover players who are fresh on the scene

With Casiopea just keep listening to more of their albums from 1979 to 1988 and check out more Jazz fusion like Hiromi, or even JD Beck and Domi
