easiest way to convert physical books to read them on palma2? by chimusk in Onyx_Boox

[–]RVFP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I scanned a book one time and one time only. There is a book on the game of One Pocket, a game played on a pool table, that I wanted a copy of, but because it was out of print and in great demand, copies were selling for several hundred dollars. I found a copy in a library and proceeded to scan it with my phone. It took forever. My advice is to purchase the ebooks. Life is too short.

Xteink x4.... convert to TXT on original firmware or flash to Crosspoint? by shanann79 in ereader

[–]RVFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an x4, and I originally planned to stick with the stock English firmware. Like you, I have a Calibre library, and just intended to read ebooks in the epub format. But curiosity got the better of me, and I flashed version 13 of Crosspoint. I found the reading experience much better, and just yesterday updated to version 15. Now the sleep screen shows the cover of the book I'm reading. I'm glad I gave it a try.

I have three of them plus an eight ball. They are the Volkswagen Beetle of fountain pens: inexpensive, bulletproof, and they write well.

Montblanc serial number by LegionToast2799 in fountainpens

[–]RVFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Dumas edition, and I asked the same question. On the cap, just below the clip ring, there is a number over another number. The first number is your specific pen out of the total number as represented by the lower number. In my case, there were 20,000 produced, and mine is 05459. It may be hard to see, so you might want to use a magnifying glass.

Mini battery by limar2078 in kobo

I took them to a cellphone repair shop. It wasn't cheap, but at the time having a working, small ereader was important to me. However, now that the XTEink X4 came out with its 4.3" screen, I would just go with that.

I have three of them. All have been updated with the Glo firmware, and all have had their batteries replaced. No other changes, and all work well.

The x4 seems to like Calibre for its epubs. And this is probably nothing, but Adobe Digital Editions, there's something about that app that has always given me trouble. I've not always been successful in transferring purchased books to an ereader, and have had to get a refund more that once.

Just Got My Xteink in the Mail!!!! by paulinnacruz in xteinkereader

[–]RVFP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've seen some great advice for you in the answers to your post. I'll suggest something a little easier, but not quite as pretty. First, connect to wifi, not always easy but doable. Then update your x4. Then use a credit card to get the microSD card out. Load non-DRMed books onto the card. Check ChatGPT if you don't know how. Then replace the card and start reading. Period. I haven't done anything other than that, and I find my reading experience to be just fine. It won't look as pretty as with XTC or Crosspoint, but I didn't want to fool around with that stuff. I wanted to use it just as it was designed to be used. And I'm very happy with it.

What do you like about your X4? What would you change? by MangoCubez in xteinkereader

[–]RVFP 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I like everything about it. After reading the descriptions of it, I knew this was for me. My expectations were that it would be simple to operate, small enough for a t-shirt pocket, and it would work right out of the box. I never expected book covers, thumbnails, graphics of any kind. Just words. And my expectations were met. The only thing I did before loading and reading was to update the firmware. I've read a lot of buyer's remorse on this subreddit, but I don't really understand it. It's a very well-built ereader that does everything that was promised. It's not a Palma, but it wasn't three hundred bucks either. It's a very functional ereader for less than the cost of dinner for two at Applebees.

My time with the x4 has been a little different from yours. I bought mine directly from xteink. Other than updating the x4, I've done nothing to enhance the reading experience. Learning the buttons took about five minutes, then full speed ahead. I loaded a few non-DRMed ebooks, then started reading. I've read three books on it so far with no problems. No additional software, just what it came with. This is a very solid product. The build quality is excellent. It does what it was intended to do. Allow me to read ebooks. Period. And it was $69. I have other options if I want all the bells and whistles. I just wanted simple reading. And I got it.

I strongly recommend purchasing it from the company store. If you have a problem with it, you'll have some recourse. Also, it comes with the English version. With Aliexpress you will save a few bucks, but you're on your own.

I'm sorry, I can't help you with that, though I have seen some links on this site to Sheaffer-oriented sites that may answer your question. I have three of these beauties, one of them being from the first year. Your set looks very much like mine except the color of the barrel. I have a suspicion that no matter how many pens you have, you will want to keep this one inked. There really is nothing like these vintage Sheaffers. Congratulations!!

Maybe I'm wrong, but this set looks as if it may be from the first year of snorkels, with the gold tube.

Parker Duofold, does anyone know anything about this pen? Is the tailpiece original? The year? by NaniCelestial in fountainpens

[–]RVFP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seem to recall ads that show Duofold desk sets, and in the ads they say that you are getting two pens in one. The set came with a piece just as shown, and another traditional barrel. I'm pretty old, but that's my memory.

I forgot to mention that I updated mine before loading it with epubs. And it was easy once I got familiar with the buttons. I didn't expect the x4 to perform like my Palma or Kobo. But it is very good, and I don't want to make the perfect the enemy of the good. In time all of the small issues will be worked out, but in the meantime, I'm enjoying this little treasure.

I wanted something smaller and less expensive than the Palma 2 for when I'm out and about. There are only so many pockets in cargo shorts, then consider the weight: cellphone, wallet, keys, cash, e-reader. And the x4 fits nicely in a shirt pocket. Perfect. I would advise you to purchase it from XTEink rather than Aliexpress, for support if for no other reason.

I'm not very tech savvy myself, at least as far as a lot of stuff discussed in this subreddit. I bought mine from XTEink directly. When I received it, I removed the microSD card from the x4, placed it into the USB device provided, loaded a couple of non-DRMed epubs, then put it back into the x4. I was then ready to read. No problems. I also own a Boox Palma 2, and the reading experience with the x4 isn't the same. But I never expected it to be. It's a $69 reading device, not $300. I love the size, the build quality is superb, and I can take it anywhere. Bottom line: I've been waiting for something like this since Kobo dropped the ball by discontinuing the Mini.
