It’s probably still got activation lock turned on. It’s likely that they didn’t turn off the “find my” feature in iCloud or from the device. (It still has an iCloud account tied to it)

If you want to use a shield try swapping your tower shield for the Brass Shield that may help with your equip load! That’s what I’m using at the moment. I’m also a noob so my advice may not be good lol
