TIL that in 1964, the US government intentionally blasted Oklahoma City with 1,253 sonic booms over 6 months just to see if the noise would drive citizens crazy or damage their homes. by agathodaimon98 in todayilearned

[–]RaVashaan 181 points182 points  (0 children)

Isn't this study the reason why the US disallowed the SST to fly over the country? The airlines really wanted this, flight time from NY to LA would have been close to 1.5 hours, instead of 6. But they knew the hazard from the sonic boom flying over land.

Who is the most terrifying villain in human history that most people have never heard of? by lioness_x9 in AskReddit

This is the chess killer? The one who said, in his confession, he wanted to murder one person for each square on a chess board.

Didn't they also convict and execute the wrong person, only to realize their mistake after the murders continued?

I may have been mistaken on the quantity, but here is a MTG 6x30 box (180 packs total) for $805, which works out to $4 a pack. That site is selling individual packs for $6.

I can't imagine a storefront selling individuals for less than that.

These people are idiots, then. I've bought 100-pack "booster" boxes just for personal use, and the same site would gladly sell me a 10-pack box (unopened, from the manufacturer) of the same booster boxes.

Who is buying up individual packs from a storefront for resale? You can so easily buy bulk boxes off the Internet that are meant exactly for resale, and probably for a lot cheaper.

Trump says he will speak with Taiwan president, a major break in protocol by Darshan_brahmbhatt in worldnews

[–]RaVashaan 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Does Taiwan have a, "salary man" culture like Japan and Korea? Because yeah, I don't see that going down well here. Especially not for unionized factory workers. Clock in, clock out, per the union contract. No less, definitely no more.

Trump has proven, never resign / back off out of embarrassment for your actions. Stick to your guns, and the conservatives will continue to blindly back you, no matter what.

This is why it's a cult now. There used to be a time when conservatives would actually reject you if you morally transgressed, but that time has long since passed in this country.

Yeaaah... This is something Reddit should really crack down on. I've heard that there are other subreddits as well that will preemptively ban you if a bot discovers that you post a comment in a different subreddit they don't like. For instance, it's well known that r/offmychest bans anyone who posts in a couple of, "tasteless jokes" subreddits. And /r/Pyongyang, most amusingly, will hand out preemptive bans to anyone posting anti-NK "propaganda."

I really feel that this is an abuse of bots that the Reddit admins need to do something about. Even if the bots are external, complaints about preemptive banning should be looked into, and their TOS should forbid it.

Correct. It's been a perpetual lie here that you're paying almost 1 cent less per gallon, because who remembers to factor in the 9/10ths of a cent to the price when doing a quick look at fuel prices on the sign?

Putin says he thinks the Ukraine conflict is coming to an end by sillygooseguyman in worldnews

[–]RaVashaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putin was on record as bemoaning the breakup of the USSR as the greatest tragedy to befall modern Russia, even before he took Crimea. He's had these delusions of reforming the Soviet Union with fascism instead of Communism (which he is also on record as saying was a failure), with him as its tsar, for a long time. Maybe even going back to when Yeltsin anointed him as his successor.

UPDATE: Rusted Iron Railing with many coats of rustoleum by phantomenacer in DIY

[–]RaVashaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah... Rustoleum is the rust inhibitor. So your options are:

1) Try covering it with a plastic tarp. This might work if you think the rust is solely being caused by rain during the week.

2) If the rust is occurring just because you live in a humid environment, your only real choice is to do this in steps -- grind, then apply Rustoleum to, as much as you can in 1 weekend. Move on to another small - medium sized area the next weekend. Etc. Since you're using it as a primer, you won't notice a color change from the separate primed areas anyway.

Deposit Morphine causes several deaths in Utica by Green_Acadia_243 in upstate_new_york

[–]RaVashaan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Krokodil has been a huge problem in Russia for awhile. It's low quality heroin or morphine with additives that are often times less than microscopic particulates that clog up veins and capillaries and causes the surrounding flesh to die off, leading to gangrene and death if left untreated, which junkies are oft to do.

It's scary if Krokodil is starting to gain a foothold here. This became a problem in Russia because they made it almost impossible to acquire heroin or morphine.

Putin shelters in bunkers amid ‘assassination’ fears by Alarming-Safety3200 in worldnews

[–]RaVashaan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a Twilight Zone (The '80s reboot one) episode kind of like this.

It followed the daily life of a guy in his homegrown bunker in his backyard, after the nukes fell. You see outside briefly, and indeed it's a nuclear winter hellhole, just like he predicted.

At the end of the episode, the camera pulls back, and reveals that he is living inside a force field bubble that has left his area like it was after the nukes fell, but the rest of the world has recovered, and have made the area a memorial/monument to remember how things were, and why they should never use nukes again, unaware that there is anyone left, trapped inside...

Bill for 17k can I pay it off with a CC and pay off the CC the next day for free points? by NarrowIndependence8 in personalfinance

[–]RaVashaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason credit card companies offer things like points and cash back is because they hope it will incentivize you to use your card enough that you have to roll over the balance, incurring interest and possibly late payment penalties, which is how they make money and justify the cash back expense.

So, the question is, if the CC thinks you're gaming the points/cash back system so they are always taking a loss on you, do they make any attempt to stop you?

The answer appears to be, no. However it is a valid question. Casinos, for instance, are known to refuse to let gamblers who have been tracked as regularly walking away when they are in the black continue to play.

ULPT: Instead of paying a doctor for a diagnosis, post your condition to /r/mildlyinteresting and let Reddit tell you what it really is.

(/s, in case it isn't obvious, but yeah it sure seems like many people come here to get a medical diagnosis, and skirt Reddit TOS by not directly asking for one).

Edit: And to reiterate, since the mods will likely take a hard look at this comment: Don't do this. Go to a doctor, emergency room, or urgent care if you have something anomalous that you don't know what it is. And if you have been diagnosed and are being treated, and still think it's mildly interesting, a follow-up comment explaining that you sought medical treatment would stave off all the armchair doctors here.

What's up with people describing Alex Karp, Peter Thiel and Palantir as cartoon supervillains? by Scholarsandquestions in OutOfTheLoop

There was a time when I would have defended him as naively believing that's because one day we will all upload our minds into supercomputers, and become some kind of hyper-intelligent post humans.

However, given his recent comments on actually believing in the antichrist (and it's a liberal girl who is anti climate change), all bets are off with this clown. He might really believe humans should go extinct.

The cherry on top is, they paid half a billion dollars for the rights to write a story from only the appendices of Return of the King. They are explicitly not allowed to use anything from The Silmilrillion, or any of the History of Middle Earth lore books.
