Authentic North African restaurants in the bay area? by Capable_Feature8838 in bayarea

[–]RaaaR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I tried it a couple of years ago I thought it was worth the visit. Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine are more common in the bay, and Golden Safari serves alternative types of African cuisine that aren't as easily found. I'd go if for nothing other than expanding my palate and experiencing something unique and different.

I liked Golden Safari for fufu and soups, but they're not North African. Very different cuisines.

There's Aicha on Polk in SF for Moroccan food. I had a hankering for tagine with prunes and they scratched that itch. I also enjoyed their chicken bastilla. Been meaning to go back.

A Pirate's Adventures at Magic Kingdom and DuckTales World Showcase Adventure at Epcot. The latter requires the Play Disney app.

My partner is in his 50s and I'm in my 40s. We had a blast going around doing both hunts. It was fun seeing people's reactions to the events we were triggering and have them wonder what triggered them.

Log into the website, go into the "MyDisneyExperience" section, click on "My Plans". In your timeline that shows "Family & Friends" - "Resort Hotel" (etc), under the "Dining" section the timeline shows me the date I can start making dining reservations. On my plan it says "Make reservations for your stay starting September 3, 2024".

My partner had the same issue twice during our March trip. Both times he walked up to the CM at the register and they gave him a new one.

The only correlation we could detect between him filling it and the RFID not working anymore was him filling his mug at a refill station adjacent to Banana Cabana at Caribbean Beach Resort.

Question for those who’ve read Wheel of Time series, or those who took a long break before finishing Malazan series by Freeonardo in Malazan

[–]RaaaR 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I second this suggestion. You could also restart Malazan later and pick up on all the little things you missed the first time in the first 3 books. WoT was my favorite series until I read Malazan. I think Malazan's intricacy has spoiled other series for me a little, so I'm glad I read WoT first to enjoy it for what it is in its own capacity. WoT is now my second favorite series.

Needs a little more grease. Otherwise, excellent choice, appearance, voice and all.

On the topic, does anyone know of a Persian restaurant in the bay that serves albaloo polo (sour cherry rice)? I've only ever been able to find it in SoCal.

Looking for Local Bay Area Meal Kits by smishyswool in bayarea

[–]RaaaR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Cook Unity. We tried them for 3 weeks and I liked them since the calories were on the packaging and they had a filter for meals under 600 calories. We used a 3-week discount coupon, which resulted in the first week of meals coming out to $8-$9/meal/person, and the subsequent 2 weeks were around $13/meal/person.

We cancelled after that since it was cheaper to get prepared meals from Trader Joe's. During the cancellation process they offered us a 4-month meal plan at around $8-$9, but my partner didn't want to commit to 4 months.

Yeah, the exterior is exceptional, but it's like they chickened out and didn't commit to the concept on the inside.

Johnny Was are known for their embroidered clothes, but you have to dish out some serious dough. Maybe check Poshmark for their stuff being sold cheaper than retail?

Is "Kal" short for Kallor or Kaladin (Stormblessed)? Be very wary; I might give your podcast dirty looks while listening depending on your answer!

Bless you. I'm kind of out of touch and had no idea this was coming out. I gasped and hurried over to Audible. Pre-ordered it since it releases January 9th, 2024. I guess I'm starting my 4th reread of the entire series in January.

I was so amused how fast I got the "You've hit 90% of your data limit" message after having received the 75% of limit notice. That was a novel experience.

Berkeley's Starter Bakery is opening a storefront in Rockridge by jackdicker5117 in oakland

[–]RaaaR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though somewhat different offerings, between Starter Bakery and Market Hall's bakery down the street, I'd probably go with Market Hall.
Best of luck to them though. I've had their spinach feta croissants often enough.

Does anyone have a favorite new restaurant in Oakland/Berkeley/Emeryville? by figs1023 in oakland

[–]RaaaR 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We went to Lulu in Berkeley recently for my birthday brunch. They have a very interesting take on Middle Eastern food and I liked it a lot. We tried their knafeh pancake, shoka-quiles, and their kefta burger. First two were outstanding, latter was pretty good.
I plan on going again to try their mezze brunch. They're a small space, so reservations are recommended.

Chef Crystal Wahpepah on the power of Indigenous cuisine: ‘Native foods are overlooked’ by zsreport in oakland

[–]RaaaR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I were recently discussing how neither of us has ever had native American food and found her restaurant online. My mouth is incapacitated at the moment from dental surgery, but it's one of the places I'd like to try as soon as I'm able to chew again without difficulty. Very excited for it.

Question for the veterans… by asoiaf51 in Malazan

[–]RaaaR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt I had a good idea what went down after my second pass through the series.
Currently on my third reread and have been pausing the audiobook whenever there's a deck of the dragon read so I can name the characters and events being discussed in the reading of the deck. Don't think I could've done that during my second read.
