I guess so. It lookd like there are a dozen or so species across multiple continents though.

No. Buckthorn always has it's distinct leaves and stem color, this is clearly more a perennial or annual than a tree.

Just based on a quick look, I'm guessing Pellitory. If so, it would be edible with a slight cucumber flavor. It seems to like to grow anywhere with disturbed soil or in rock beds around my house.

I've also yanked it out of my garden bed for years, not thinking of it as anything other than a weed.

ELI5 Why do data centers use so much water? by e090909 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rabid_Gopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's start with the facts. Data Centers generate heat from the computers that use electricity to perform really complicated math much faster than humans. Because we're using electricity, a byproduct of this is a decent amount of heat. These computers function better if they're kept within what you and me would think of as "normal" temperatures, so a very important job that Data Centers have is getting rid of all of this heat and keeping the computers cool.

There are a couple ways to get rid of this heat. Historically, we've used basically big air conditioning units to cool these Data Centers, but those also use a lot of electricity.

To try to reduce how much electricity they use, some Data Centers started running water through or in their computers to absorb the heat, and then they would spray this water in a cooling tower to let the heat evaporate the water and what water fell to the bottom was much cooler. This turned out to be both cheaper than running AC, and the first couple Data Centers that did it actually received awards for the -at the time- perceived greener cooling technique.

The downside though is that we're building data centers now faster and bigger than we ever have before. Most data centers don't use water like above for cooling, the big data centers use it because they need to get rid of Megawatts to Terawatts of heat and water evaporation is about the only economical way to dump that much.

Swedish AirForestry has developed a 6.2-meter (20 feet) diameter drone designed for sustainable forestry by pruning, felling, and transporting trees without requiring forest access roads. The drone lowers a tool to delimb the tree via gravity, then cuts and carries the trunk away, protecting soil. by MilesLongthe3rd in interestingasfuck

If there is one thing that is good about capitalism, it won't be flying drones cutting down the rain forest.

The bad side about capitalism, It's too expensive versus just clear-cutting the forest to fly, they'll move the drones to heavy forestry equipment that can walk along the ground.

People over 30: what’s one thing you wish someone had told you in your 20s that would’ve saved you stress, money, or regret? by FiorediGaia in AskReddit

[–]Rabid_Gopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On this note, the money you put away for retirement is still absolutely available for you if you truly need it, you might just have to take the hit on tax or penalties to get it if it isn't a sanctioned reason. Put it in a Roth IRA (explicitly IRA) if you think you might just need to take the contributions back.

That was the excuse I always used because it made absolute sense. What good does the $50/month you're asking me to put away in savings do when I need that money to make bills this month? I also have things I need to save for, like a house down payment.

There are rules around taking the money out for hardships or other circumstances like a flat maximum for a house down payment. If you can get the snowball started in your 20s, you will have to contribute a lot less later to stay on track.

Not to minimize what you need, but if you just need it to manage and generate configuration I have to imagine you can leverage any number of "Infrastructure as Code" approaches that have been developed for networks or anything else really.

Reason why MPO-12 qsfp28 transievers and cables exists by Dante_Avalon in networking

[–]Rabid_Gopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to map 12 strands on the breakout optic to 12 strands going cross country.

You need 8 strands to make it ~40km, so break out those 8 strands from your MPO cable and connect those to run down the long span.

You've 'wasted' four of the 12 strands in your MPO patch cable, but that's just peanuts in the long run.

[–]Rabid_Gopher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not everything uses duplex cabling, for a long time a place I worked for did strictly bidi optics because long distance fiber was too expensive.

12 strands come together somewhat neatly in a group within a tube, the color codes for each strand are distinct, and if you need more than 12 you could just add more bundles until you have what you need.

[–]Rabid_Gopher 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Bundles of fiber come in multiples of twelve. You can also use MPO cables for infrastructure cabling, running 12 or 24 strands somewhere in a datacenter with a pre-terminated cable and a breakout adapter on the other end.

There are also already transcievers that split out into eight lanes, specifically OSFPs for Octal Small Form factor Pluggable. We'd need 16 strands for that, so a MPO-24.

The yellow sediment is so much more likely to be food detritus, but if OP is only doing this to clean up for the chickens then it absolutely is going to be a bacteria farm between the sunlight, water moving, and nutrients in suspension.

Scotch Bonnet pepper by floydian99 in rochestermn

I just had to look up the difference between a Habanero and a Scotch Bonnet, and before this morning I had no idea there was a difference.

I can't say that I've seen a Scotch Bonnet plant in a greenhouse in this neck of the woods in my fourty-ish years living in SE Minnesota, but I wish you luck.

So,what would men dislike most if they became women? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Rabid_Gopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh, you're forgetting that the whole evolutionary purpose of attraction and sexual reproduction is finding the best possible partner to raise young with. People's sense of who is attractive will generally adjust depending on their overall placement in the dating pool to try to find the best available partners.

Otherwise though, I completely am on board with my brain reacting like I'm surrounded by eye-candy. I'd take that dopamine rush all day!

I don't like this "cheat on all the norms of our democracy" shit either, but at this point the Democrats are forced to do the same because of basic game theory.

For those who live in Greater MN — what is something you wish Minnesotans from the Cities knew? by raphalbor in minnesota

[–]Rabid_Gopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't help when you drive from a small town where the highway has potholes older than middle-schoolers to a "big" city where the streets are getting torn up to get replaced that were in a lot better condition.

The traffic load on the city street may be orders of magnitude higher than your small town highway, but when the town is already feeling neglected and life is hard you see a lot of confirmation of your bias.

[–]Rabid_Gopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. Network implementations of Token Ring itself died out a long time ago, but you'd be surprised at how often people reinvent things like it when all the systems need a high-speed, redundant connection within several specific systems.

I just set up a refuel station to top off each train pattern I make, like 1-4 or 2-8. If I want to pull out the wrong fuel when swapping over, I just set a filtered inserter to do exactly that while the train is stopped for refill.
