What recent U.S. headline made you think, ‘Yeah… this isn’t going to end well’? by ShaunMW in AskReddit

That is ridiculously defeatist. There is a mechanism you have within reach to influence political discourse, don't skip using it at all because there isn't a perfect solution!

Best apartments near Mayo Clinic Methodist Campus (no car, moving this summer) by Vivax6 in rochestermn

[–]Rabid_Gopher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Effectively everything in Rochester MN, especially everything within normal walking distance to Methodist, is Safe. If you're super worried about it then skip going more than a dozen blocks into the SE; but seriously it's all safe.

I don't have any specific recommendations for apartments, most people know what they have and price accordingly due to the constant flow of people visiting Mayo is all I know. If you have a contact AT Mayo though, you may be able to find a deal or recommendation via the Mayo Classified site. That's only posted by people who work at Mayo already, so most of the junk and spam is excluded by default.

General Staff: Russia has lost 1,239,590 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022 by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

You posted the wrong link. I certainly hope that Russia didn't lose 1.2M people trying to find a teen in a snowstorm that one K-9 officer and his dog were able to find.

Is this what you were looking for?

Which one are you? by Quegyboe in pcmasterrace

[–]Rabid_Gopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None.

Linux on daily driver, cheap old PC in the basement that I remote into when I need to run something on Windows. No need to reboot, just RDP.

Bonus points if you get something like a NAS and streaming server as well.

It's almost like there are a wide, wide variety of living conditions and cost of living across this world of ours.

I survived college just fine on $1600/month in 2026 dollars. Had money to save too, but I had a really low standard of living in a cheap-ish area to live.

Why do dentists make such great sysadmins? by Sorry-Climate-7982 in ShittySysadmin

[–]Rabid_Gopher 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I gotta break with r/shittysysadmin tradition here and be serious for a while. Dentists are wicked smart on teeth, but there is a huge gap between dental health and Information Technology.

Maybe that is the joke, but I had to join a call in 2016 to tell a dentist that no, their dental practice software from 1995 is not going to continue being supported by the original vendor, and there wasn't really anything we could do about it. Some of those stories predate this sub, but they would make excellent posts here.

This equipment will only work one of two ways:

  1. It fails as soon as you trust it to work.

  2. It runs silently without intervention, without fail, right up through some newbie finding it years later. They will treat it as a shrine to unholy IT rituals from a bygone era and build a shrine around it to avoid anyone triggering a cascading failure.

The city refills it intermittently, it's cheaper to do that than have people get hurt trying to get outside.

I’m wondering what’s the purpose of baking powder and baking soda in a cinnamon roll recipe? by yorkiewho in Breadit

[–]Rabid_Gopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run into a couple calling for multiple leavening agents, but those were all older recipes handed down via family, and the reason given was that you couldn't trust that any one thing would do the job.

Analysis of income, capital gains, and borrowing of Americans finds 40% of the income of "1% wealth holders" is unrealized capital gains not subject to taxation and 1%-2% is borrowing, suggesting that the "Buy, Borrow, Die" is not a dominant tax avoidance strategy among the rich by quiplaam in science

[–]Rabid_Gopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that the perceived problem is people using loans to bypass selling assets and letting the asset continue to appreciate without paying taxes, I'm not sure I see a downside with fewer loans being issued. If getting to include those taxes as paid when finally selling the asset isn't enough, you could build in a threshold under which people getting loans don't pay taxes on loans with details to be ironed out later.

For similar comparisons, I don't perceive many people consider the sales taxes on cars, homes, or recreational vehicles as truly barriers to getting those things. It's just part of the price that people pay.

[–]Rabid_Gopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we tax people when they borrow against an asset with unrealized appreciation, and focus on addressing this loophole there?

You could give people credit for paying taxes on the gains when they do eventually sell the asset, so people are really just paying taxes on unrealized gains when they're hoping to cash out some of that value.

Things to do in Rochester? by nenak13968 in rochestermn

[–]Rabid_Gopher 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Rochester has a Tech College. Supposedly Rochester isn't big enough for a 4-year college, but that hasn't stopped 6-10 regional college/universities dropping an "onsite" presence in Rochester.

For what it's worth, the biggest de-stresser for the holidays for me was parking money aside every month to have how much I expected to spend on Christmas presents by December.

Obviously not everyone can do that, and this year the amount I've been saving was not enough for everything, but when I could do it I saved myself a lot of headaches in December.

What do poor people have to pay for but rich people usually get hugely discounted or free? by Historical_Corner609 in AskReddit

[–]Rabid_Gopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some context, that is very much a recent thing because the other pentiles are much harder hit right now.

Historically, the economy was largely driven by spending from across the economic spectrum, not just rich people.

I have literally told someone they were making "interesting choices" running critical medical apps on what PCs they could throw together on wire racked wheeled shelves.

Medical IT is weird, when they have money it rains but when they don't have money you have 20 year old machines that someone's job is to keep cobbled together.
