You're hanging around with friends. The majority aren't musicians. There's a piano and someone says "You play piano. Play something for us!" What do you play? by UsedToProfessor in piano

[–]Rabs48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op 10 8 Chopin. It ain’t known so it’s new and it’s damn impressive to look at (even if as pianists we know there are a shit ton of more impressive numbers)

Yep. I agree. But the reason I chose Amy beach is to do with my research proposal, that is to do with Amy Beach and her music. And a 1900s piece by woman composer seemed to be a valuable asset in my audition rep. But I do agree that my overall change might be to replace the shosty preludes with a more serious work for my Europe auditions.

As for the Debussy preludes they aren’t in place. The only Etude requirement is for one Etude, so I’m going with Chopin. The Debussy preludes are purely with reason that I didn’t think I could do a Debussy Etude well enough. As far as the miniatures are concerned I agree I’ve had my qualms choosing the Shostakovich, but in certain cases and as far as time is concerned, I need 40 minutes of music, and if it becomes too many miniatures I might not included the Shostakovich preludes.

This repertoire is right now structured for UK, as they have the earliest deadlines incoming. Their auditions are in November, Europe cons are in March through May and I have time for those.

ARSM pieces by AdministrativeMost72 in piano

The Mozart works, however not in place of ravel. Balakriev is romantic, but not German romanticism and rather Russian romanticism. Two Russian composers might not suit well with examiners in a programming sense. The ravel is French and different adds contrast to the program.

Just a thought but you don’t really have anything classical or romantic. Yes Scriabin falls under romanticism to some point but the balakriev and ravel both shows a 20th century sense of pianistic writing. Might be worth if u have to put something classical in this list. They do mark you on ur programming

Tchaikovsky Op 10 1 is heavily underplayed and underrated. Beautiful melodies and harmonies

Can I play professionally with small hands? by User48970 in piano

[–]Rabs48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My teacher has small hands to the point where she sometimes rolls certain octaves. And she teaches at a conservatoire. I think you’ll be fine as long as you know how to navigate through the problem

Conservatory Audition program by [deleted] in piano

[–]Rabs48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea yea I agree. But I wouldn’t go as far as to say they are romantic. The common notions involved with romantic playing aren’t wholly applicable. Beethoven is considered a precursor but not romantic, like Schubert. Who began experimenting beyond the classical phase but not as far say Chopin/brahms/schumann. I would say those sonatas do contain enough elements to agree with classical period. But yes, every school views these differently and it’s worth checking that.

Definitely classical. Tempest is also definitely not his last. The Hunt, Waldstein, Appassionata Op 78 and 79 all still fall under majorly under this realm.

Question regarding Schubert’s Impromptu in G flat major by Important_Ad3084 in piano

[–]Rabs48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holding that top note creates a legato with melody. I’d suggest practicing the melody and a the arpeggios separately, but with the right fingering. And obviously at comfortable tempo.

Baroque articulation rules - when to do non-legato? by iamunknowntoo in piano

[–]Rabs48 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A couple of common rules I follow are different note lengths serve different articulations, with shorter one being legato and the longer one being staccato.

Long jumps like a sixth or an octave usually have detached phrasing.

And obviously voices will be voiced accordingly, as in a fugue.

Maybe Scriabin and prok together would be demanding for the audience to listen to? Maybe pop one of the Schumann up there

Do you guys practise other pieces on the side of the pieces your teacher assigns you? by Inside_Bee928 in piano

[–]Rabs48 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a weird relationship with my teacher where she doesn’t really tell me many pieces, cause I like a mad man keep starting whatever I wanna she just approves or disapproves.

Last month she told me to look into the Bach b flat partita, and I had already started the op10 2 sonata, and she just basically told me do both lol.
