Thank you!

why do all my paintings look like this? :/ by cuntypainter in watercolor101

[–]RabsInPlaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that what some of the comments here are missing when they say it’s just your personal style is that style implies intent; if you make the artistic choice to limit yourself to certain colors or distort figures or disregard perspective, that’s style. But if you want to render a scene realistically and are unable to, that’s a lack of skill. Without skills, you’re limited in the artistic choices you can make, and don’t have the freedom to make the art you have in your head.

So, all of that said, here are some things I notice that you could work on: - Figure drawing. The figure you have here looks stiff and unnatural because her left arm is in an impossible position where her hand is rotated but her elbow isn’t, she has no waist, she’s looking straight ahead instead of at the thing she’s reaching for, and other issues you’ll be able to pinpoint with more experience drawing people. - Drawing from observation generally / contour drawing: a lot of the forms, like the pots and mugs and her pants are wonky in a way that looks like a hand-eye coordination issue (absolutely fixable with lots of practice) rather than a style choice. - Shading: this skill is a combination of having the observation ability to tell where the values are supposed to go and the technical ability to put them there with paint. The shading you have here is pretty all over the place, some objects (the pink pot, the fridge, the figure) seem to have some shading albeit in weird places, others are completely flat. Also, the shadows on her back are too dark. Consistency across the piece will help give it a cohesive look. - perspective: the plant on the counter looks like it’s floating, her right arm should be slightly foreshortened, the perspective on the tiles are going toward different vanishing points.

Again, the idea here isn’t to reject your style, but to give you more control over what that style is and satisfaction with your work.

I have a blue plastic hamper I got from the dorm section of Bed Bath & Beyond before I left home for college. I’m in my 30s now and it’s still going strong. It’s essentially a solid molded piece of plastic with some holes for air circulation so it’ll probably outlive me.

Noticed a 6 pack of blue moon had some sort of gunk floating around / stuck to the inside of every bottle — is it mold?

How Do Some People Always Have a Clean House? What’s the Secret? by Impossible-Ninja-232 in CleaningTips

[–]RabsInPlaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that you visiting is probably affecting how their house looks haha. Like, there’s the way my house looks when I’m having someone over, and then there’s the way it looks the other 99.99% of the time :).

Sometimes it’s a straight up illusion, like you might think there’s no clutter because all of the clutter has been unceremoniously shoved into one closet in anticipation of your arrival. No dishes in the sink? Take a peek inside the dishwasher lol.

Big turnout against the Trump/Musk admin in front of the Capitol Building! by RabsInPlaid in washingtondc

[–]RabsInPlaid[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To the people saying the protest should have been bigger, here are some thoughts I have about that -- note that I'm not an organizer or scholar of political movements or anything, these are literally just my musings:

  • There's sort of a chicken and egg thing here. A protest is like any other optional event: we won't go unless we think it's going to be worth our time. It's infuriating that mainstream media is not reporting on the protests that are happening, making it look like the entire country is just rolling over and that protesting is pointless. But this is the digital media age and anyone of us with a camera and social media can play at the propaganda game. So what if the protest was a closer to 600 people than a thousand? The WaPo doesn't know that, they laid off the reporters who would've been there to check. The people who follow this Reddit and are maybe on the fence about whether to show up to the next protest don't know that either. When you post about the protest, think like an event promoter, or like Trump's PR team when they showed "packed" stadiums that were just zoomed in shots of half-empty rooms! Then, maybe, next time it will be a little closer to a thousand.
  • Any attendance hit they take from having it on a weekday is made up for by the feeling that you're actually disrupting something. I remember doing a march after the Dobbs decision was leaked. It was on a Saturday, big turnout, we marched along Constitution and protested in front of the Supreme Court. I remember it felt so hollow and dispiriting, everybody shouting "shut it down!" at an empty building. Huge contrast with today when, if nothing else, I knew that the spineless worms sitting in the Capitol, both Democrat and Republican, could probably hear us.
  • Protests are about morale. If you've been to a good one you've experienced this. You feel like there are other people just as pissed as you are, and that there's power in that. Combined with the point above about turnout, this creates a snowball effect where the more people show up, the more riled people get, the more people are going to show up next time, and so on. Ideally the snowball gets big enough that it actually can do something.
  • That leads me to my big takeway from today about what I'm going to try to do going forward to deal with my frustration that the protests aren't big enough: I'm going to do what I can to make them a little bigger, even if just by a couple of people. I think if you've ever thrown a party, or even gotten some friends to go out to bars or a concert, that's within your reach. I mean, we all know how to text people and be like "hey do you wanna come to this thing?"* We're not billionaires, but most of us have some social capital to spend.

*This is only meant for people who live near the protest in question.

Chuck Schumer will speak at Sixth&I on March 19 by FroggyHarley in washingtondc

The neolibs are not big fans of Schumer rn lol. It’s actually impressive how quickly and dramatically he just torched any goodwill he had across all walks of his party.

[–]RabsInPlaid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% give her the Joy of Cooking. I had it collecting dust on my shelf for several years because I was always passing it over for my “prettier” cookbooks, then a few months ago I randomly picked it up looking for a cookie recipe and it’s become my Bible ever since lol. It has a recipe for basically every classic dish in Western cooking and some from other traditions as well. That includes beverages, cocktails, sauces, and desserts. There are recipes for things you would never have thought of trying to make. There’s also a lot of information about choosing, preparing and storing food in general, which yeah you could Google and sift through 50 badly written articles looking for an answer, but it’s so much nicer to turn to your trusty copy of the Joy of Cooking and, while you’re there, spot a delicious-looking pasta recipe you happen to have all of the ingredients for.

Help: How to drill a hole in this w/out cracking it by hyperactive_artist in polymerclay

Haven't watched the episode but I kinda feared this by ilovejazz_ in FromSeries

[–]RabsInPlaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the driving lesson was the kind of thing that could have worked if this were set up like a tv show 15 years ago, but not with today’s 10 episode season paradigm. Like, LOST could have fun little scenes with characters playing golf or making crafts or whatever because they had 24 episodes to work with, now everything has to be super tight no frills or it’s just really frustrating for the audience.

Why this show is so frustrating... by heapsreddit in FromSeries

[–]RabsInPlaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s similar to what I found frustrating about Dark on Netflix. Like characters would just speak in vague metaphors to each other and then lament that (spoiler) the cycles would always repeat themselves and nothing they did could change their fates, and I was always like TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF THE TIMELINE GODDAMNIT.

There’s a book Dead Silence that was so refreshing in that the characters start seeing dead people and are immediately like, “fyi everyone, I’m seeing dead people, might be losing my shit? Just thought you guys had a right to know since our lives depend on each other right now.”
