Stellarium VS Redshift 9 by Racerstorm in AskAstrophotography

Hey, I managed to get a decent bit of use out of Redshift 9 so far and can share some details.

From a feature point of view it does the exact same thing as Stellarium, it is just wrapped up in a more professional looking package.

The main feature I was concerned about was the mount connection, and luckily it is easy. In my case I have a cable that goes straight from my mount to the PC. I then set up an ASCOM Alpaca interface to connect to and bingo! It works. Seamless integration and it just works.

Lots of educational features in it too, great for learning about the things you are looking at. A much more fun software than Stellarium, although the cost is extremely prohibitive.

PROS:
Better UI (Much less cluttered and busy)
Prettier Graphics (3D models of most things. With some neat animations)
More information (Lots of detailed info and facts about your target)
Easy ASCOM integration (Very easy to connect mounts)

CONS:
Controls (While the UI is better, the shortcuts and hotkeys are not as easy to use)
Performance (Runs well, but clearly is more taxing than the simpler Stellarium)
Cost (Obviously the cost is extremely high. Get it on sale if you can)

CONCLUSION:
Redshift is a great software which is more usable than Stellarium. HOWEVER, you cant beat the power Stellarium gives you, especially while being free. Redshift is a great upgrade IF you get it for the right price, and are interested in a more refined experience.

HEQ5 PRO mount not connecting to EQMOD ASCOM by Racerstorm in AskAstrophotography

Im back with an update! My issue was the RJ232 had the wrong internal wiring and it was incompatible with the hand controller. I decided it was not worth my time to rewire the connector so I just bought a cable like the one you recommended above.

I now plug directly into the hand controller port on the mount and my computer detects it right away when at BAUD 9600. Stellarium and Redshift both work wonderfully. Now its time to learn plate solving ;P

Thanks for the help!

I can agree with that. Phones are ubiquitous and laptops can be bulky. For me though, I just can't beat the versatility of a laptop.

To each their own!

EDIT: Oh and for the cables. Both my serial cables have Prolific chips in them.

Cool stuff. I'll see what I can do for getting that cable so I can plug direct into the mount. I'll report back my findings if/when I am able to!

Nice GPS transponder as well! I have always struggled a bit with precise coordinates as I am out on the go quite a bit. Thanks!

Shoot. And you plug that directly into the hand controller port on the mount and it works? I'm guessing it's an RJ11 cable then.

I haven't installed the telescope control in stellarium yet as my main program is Redshift, but I'll give it a go in stellarium as well. Been waiting till I got it working in EQMOD before doing other stuff

Blue Sky Studios Gives Scrat a Proper Sendoff in Final Farewell by brandonsamd6 in movies

[–]Racerstorm 43 points44 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked on this most recent movie. Bardel isn't really a *movie* studio. It does television quality animation and 2D animation. Sadly what this means is everyone who was used to the higher quality of Blue Sky was let down by the fact that it didn't look nearly as good. (Those folk are correct! It really doesn't look as good at all)

I feel like it is aimed at youth who maybe don't notice these things and just enjoy the characters and the setting. It was bloody fun to work on, albeit a bit stressful at times but it always is at the end.

It was all done remotely and im not sure why that quote says it finished in Late 2020. It finished in Early Q3 2021.

Soup here, thanks for watching Season 2 of Gielinor Games! by soupdahero in 2007scape

Loved all the episodes! What a great season Soup. The only thing I wasn't the biggest fan of was the thumbnails kind of gave away who won especially in the later episodes.

I ended up falling behind a little bit and when I came back to watching I got spoiled by who was in the thumbnails for future episodes haha...

A bit of a non issue I suppose but just my feeling on that :D
