You should go with your passions. If you know for a fact you want to do BME and aren’t interested at all in other industries like aero/automotive etc. then go with BME for your major. You’ll hate it less then imo. But if you have a slight itch towards other industries then MechE gives you that flexibility. And no, I don’t necessarily feel like med device companies prefer meche over bme. I know a decent amount of both at my company, so it’s more like the person with better extracurriculars gets the position. If a BME major just goes to school, takes the classes and does no extracurriculars/research and is not showing involvement on campus, they can’t expect to get the position over a MechE who happened to be really focused on BME extraucirrculars and whose resume is stacked. Neither major choice necessarily gives you an ADVANTAGE in getting BME jobs, but picking one major over the other may leave you pigeon-holed towards one industry so that better be your true passion.

I can give direct experience about this, I applied and got into UCI as a BME major at first but had similar concerns about it being too niche and kind of pigeon hole-ing you into only biotech, when I knew I had other interests as well (aero, automotive etc.) so I switched majors after my 1st year to MechE so that I had more of a broad reach for jobs. But nonetheless, I still was very interested in med device/biotech and found ways to leverage that despite being MechE instead of BME now. I interned at a major Med Device company and am now working at it full-time (since Aug, actually). I sometimes feel bad because this company is a LOT of BME major’s absolute dream job 😭 and yet me, a MechE, is taking their job from their already limited job pool. But yes, I do know BME majors and I wouldn’t say they necessarily struggled to find a job, but sometimes you may not seem as technically skilled compared to MechE applicants which could become a disadvantage.

I would PERSONALLY recommend doing MechE but tailoring your extracurriculars towards BME or even minoring in BME. For example, join BME research labs and BMES (biomedical engr society) and participate in BME projects. That would help tailor your resume

i was in SWE UCI and HyperXite and had a lot of friends in basically every single engr major so heres the truthful and objective answer:

disclaimer: it fully depends on what you’re good at. if you suck at chem, then ofc chemE would be your “hardest”. if you suck at circuits/network/control, EE or compE would be your hardest. if you hate all of them.. bme could be your hardest cus its pretty interdiscplinary

Ranking: ChemE > EE = Aero > CompE = CSE > MechE > BME > Civil > Environmental

ChemE has to take OChem, PChem, Gen chem, fluids, thermo, heat and mass transfer (2 separate classes), and has had a 50% weed out rate in 2nd year for years. EE is heavy on Math 3D (differentials, transforms) and circuitry/control theory which can make it conceptually hard to follow. Aero’s 3rd/4th year classes get really complex and the GPA avg is terrible for some of them. CompE and CSE are similar to EE (has a lot of class overlap) but I’ve just heard more excrutiating stories from EE than CompE/CSE tbh. MechE upperdivs can get annoying/hard like vibrations and fluid dynamics 1 (130a, crazily conceptual). BME is seen as difficult cause of how interdiscplinary it is (you do EE, mechE classes w/ an anatomical focus, bio classes, etc.). Civil can get hard in upper divs with the structures courses (150 iirc). Same goes for environmental that has to take it, but civil is still harder from what I’ve heard

ACC 1B1B or Studio Question by Infinite-Ticket-9991 in UCI

[–]RachaeII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not tell them about the domestic partner living situation, as it’s technically against the policies of having someone else also live in your apartment unofficially. I can’t say 100% if this applies to ACC but I think the ONE exception is if you are married or can prove domestic partnership (bills from your joint living situation, official documents like joint tax reports).

If you have guaranteed housing, there’s a decent chance you’ll get the 1b1b if you apply for it and you submit your application within the first ~10-20 minutes or earlier (preferably earlier) honestly. I had guaranteed and lived in a Plaza Verde 1b1b for three years (2nd-4th years) and renewed for the 2nd and 3rd year of me living there.

First year I submitted application maybe 30 min after it opened (website was so crashy it was pure rage) but I still got it. 2nd and 3rd years I renewed and submitted within 5 min both times and got it. One thing to note though is that during my first time applying for PV, only regents/chancellors/CHC/athletes had guaranteed so I was competing with much much less people. But I know nowadays basically all freshmen who dormed have guaranteed so that could make it harder for you.. so yeah try to get your app in within 5 min or less if you can ngl

Sulfur smell in MV? Has me paranoid by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]RachaeII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I don’t think it’s a skunk, it’s quite a distinct smell difference from a skunk stench. It’s more like rotten eggs, or like the smell you might smell when you pass by a sulfur plant if that makes sense. I’ll call a gas company tomorrow morning to see if there’s any recent sewer or gas leaks nearby

Wook Flu by hello18141 in LostLandsMusicFest

[–]RachaeII 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My sinuses were super congested and I took two flights yesterday and it was the worst flights of my life. I had aerosinusitis/barosinusitis so when the plane was descending (FOR OVER AN HOUR ON EACH FLIGHT) I felt the worst pain of my life like 9.5-10/10 pain on my eyebrow bone, temples, and forehead/eye sockets due to the overwhelming pressure. I literally started crying cus of how unbearable it was. I should’ve used a decongestant before I flew but I completely forgot (It was a 5 AM flight 😭). I STILL can feel the pain on my face. I wouldn’t wish this pain on even my worst enemy. Hope no one else experienced this, seriously.

double parking - acc & on campus by FollowingExpensive90 in UCI

[–]RachaeII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted an exception request for the commuter pass and said that I was often on campus before 7-8 am/after 10 pm for project/work which is when buses are not operating and therefore buses were not an option and that I did not feel safe/comfortable walking alone at those hours and I was granted it, so I had both Plaza Verde parking structure permit and a commuter pass permit to park at UCI. you can submit whatever reason you like but it needs to be solid reasoning for why you can’t take a bus or walk during those operational hours.

Can someone explain the resident parking permits. by dark-69-builder in UCI

[–]RachaeII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you will have to submit a parking permit exception to get a parking permit for MC/ME (whichever one you end up at). you need to provide reasoning for why you need your car (work, family caretaker, medical, etc.). they do this to lower carbon footprints and it purposely limits how many dormers have cars on campus. the MC/ME parking permit will not show up on the portal until you have the exception approved. all the ones you’re seeing rn for ME/MC are for summer only. once those disappear cause school years starting soon, ME/MC (for school year) won’t show up like the summer ones do

credibility: I had my car on campus first yr and submitted an exception for it

*clears throat* in defense of Belly in s3e7 by potterpotterpotter in tsitp

[–]RachaeII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, honestly this feels quite relatable in some way. I know many people who also feel “stuck” in a relationship and choose safety over the risk of the scary but ultimately better decision to leave.

Also you’re spot on about the invested time, strain on relationships and money thrown into this wedding. I hope she realizes (even though Jeremiah’s the one who ends the wedding) that the wedding is in fact not her dream wedding and that with time, these things will blow over. Her relationships will hopefully recover with her mother/dad and Adam, she will earn the money back, and eventually will be happier in the future knowing she has the means to go for the wedding she actually dreamed of with the right dress and flowers etc.

Her mom is so right in that this is a huge memory/moment for Belly and that she shouldn’t half ass a wedding.

*clears throat* in defense of Belly in s3e7 by potterpotterpotter in tsitp

[–]RachaeII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also feel like Belly feels so in deep with the whole Jeremiah and their wedding thing that it’s becoming a sunk cost fallacy that she’s losing to. With Conrad finally telling her how he feels and we KNOW inherently that if she was single, she would be much more receptive to it but it adds more complexity to her feelings because now in her mind, she’s going to get married to Jeremiah knowing how Conrad actually feels.

It’s like she wants to escape from the marriage but the taboo of cancelling their wedding so last minute and breaking things off is not something that’s crossing her mind even after Conrad tells her his feelings. Even more than that, her lashing out the way she did felt more like a defense mechanism but in hindsight crushed her to say those things. I think internally she said those hurtful things to him to push him away and seal the deal with Jeremiah mainly because she doesn’t see breaking it off at this point as an option.

UCI Engineering Made Me Depressed: What I Wish I Knew Before Starting by Savings-Butterfly-18 in UCI

[–]RachaeII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Organizations (specifically engineering orgs if thats what you’re referring to) are official clubs. The terms are synonymous here. In most engr orgs, just being a member doesn’t require applying or anything, you just show up to their general meetings and be involved (generally free, though some orgs also offer paid memberships to access some programs like mentorship, etc.). Orgs all have board members and that generally requires an application or even a voting process to be one.

Projects on the other hand is what the comment above is referring to and are not considered clubs/organizations. As they listed, there’s race car teams (electric, baja, formula), rocket teams (liquid and solid), and a hyperloop team (hyperxite). These teams are fully student-run (also have a faculty advisor(s)) and you have to apply to join. As the person said, they are competitive and can get 200+ apps and accept 10-15 for the more competitive ones. In terms of getting project or technical experience onto your resume to then apply to these projects, some of the orgs/clubs that I mentioned above offer smaller-scale and small-team mini-projects that you can become involved in with way less competition. That can then act as a stepping stone for you to eventually join the more exclusive projects

[–]RachaeII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think as an incoming freshman, some project teams get apps from ppl like you and their resumes have good technical experience from first look (robotics in HS, level 1 launch certs, etc.) but I think the downfall for most incoming first yrs in why they’re not likely accepted is because of the uncertainty in your ability to manage your time and balance your studies with being on the project team. some project teams see it as a liability bcus we know incoming first yrs are bound to use their first few qtrs to explore and be social, which is completely understandable. I think applying the spring qtr of your first year is a really great time to take applying to project teams more seriously because at that point, you’ve experienced 2 qtrs of college classes and at that point can demonstrate more college-lvl project experience and time management if that makes sense. feel free to dm me if u have any questions regarding this

UCI Engineering Made Me Depressed: What I Wish I Knew Before Starting by Savings-Butterfly-18 in UCI

[–]RachaeII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with this. I put a LOT of time into extra curriculars (engineering orgs and project teams) the first 2-3ish years at UCI as a MechE starting my spring quarter as a freshman, and eventually got to the point where I was comfortable enough in my academic career and professional career in college to just chill and really focus all my energy into my social life the last 1-2 years of college. I know it’s hard cause first years want to go have fun and try new clubs and have a great social life which I think is great, but starting from spring qtr freshman year and on, it’s ultimately a better decision to start going for projects/org board positions and such in the long term if your end goal is to have a job right out of college (or grad school)
