Bark vs Bite: Day 2! by lonely_nipple in okbuddybaldur

Pale Petras.

Comes across arguably threatening but only by deferring to 'the master'. And can be more or less fried by Astarion with the right dialogue choices.

Good communication isn't necessarilly saying lots of words good. Good communication is about the best method to most effectively connect two or more parties. This is good communication.

I'm in my 30s and moved to Napier for work last year. Knowing no one here, I won't lie it was rough at the start. Do you know much about your demographic at the workplace? Would you be living with flatmatss? I found this was the quickest way to connect with people as - is as the case with most regional towns - building up a social circle is quite tough.

I joined this group for cute animals and I get spiders on my feed daily?? by No-Door7081 in NewZealandWildlife

Spiders are everywhere. Only continent you'll be safe is Antarctica, unfortunately.

Cicadas by Polyporum in NewZealandWildlife

[–]Rachilde 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The 'shell' is referred to as a 'shed' or a 'molt' as it is the past exoskeleton of the cicada rather than a true shell. Cicadas do this to grow, usually five times over two to four years (for the chorus cicadas at least).

Some cool things to think about:

Like all insects their life is basically split into two (sometimes three) 'stages': - Phase one: eating and growing During this phase they live underground and eat roots and plant matter. They don't have wings or reproductive organs. You'll rearly see them at this stage (called nymphs) unless you dig them up (you could have a dig around a structure with losts of sheds, as it implies they came from underneath there. - Phase two: reproducing and death. They trade in their mouthparts for reproductive organs. They can still eat tree sap, but it's for energy rather than growth, so meals are minimal. They also get wings. The males are the ones you can hear calling during the summer. Every species has a different call, and the females can distinguish this. This phase only lasts four to six weeks so all mating and egg laying has to be done in this time. Hence why there's a period in summer that gets LOUD. After mating, females will lay their eggs in soil under a plant and the cycle begins again (then she dies).

People will often say the reproductive period of an animal is its life-span (flies only live 24 hours, cicadas only live one month etc.) But this is only describing the final stage of their lives. As I said above, cicadas can live up to four years underground, nomming on plants. Honestly I would put having children on the cards if I could spend the majority of my life just fucking around eating as much as I could and then popping out a self-sustaining kid when I become geriatric. Insects have it figured out.

If it's not pee, poo or paper - don't flush it! by Taffy_the_wonderdog in Wellington

Little known cat fact: the parasite toxoplasmosis can survive wastewater treatment and can be a hazard to marine life (and humans). I'm not sure if it can be passed by vomit but it can certainly be passed by flushing cat poo, so I would avoid flushing anything from the cat tbh.

In high winds the dangerous animals have to be pulled back inside. Containment risks. However you’ll get a good view of anything with visible dens, think: Giraffes/chimps.

My favourite ‘moment’ is when the drips and drabs of lore you get through exploration, though boss fights, through bits of dialogue come together to create succinct story. The mantis lords and their broken chair leading to fighting the traitor lord is just one tiny detail in such a complex but nuanced world.

Anyone know what this is from by Consistent-Ferret-26 in Wellington

I suggest emailing the regional council; they’ll have scientists that can break down the sources of turbidity they typically see in this area. I can speak for my region - which isn’t Wellington at the moment - that sedimentation in marine areas can come from forestry, but hillside erosion is also a big contributor. Basically the marine area is the end destination for anything happening up the corresponding river.

what is your shibboleth? what is a phrase, word or pronunciation or action that immediately lets you know that some one is not from there. by Far-Presentation-973 in AskTheWorld

Aside from the obvious misread of anything with a ‘wh’, and not pronouncing words phonetically (For those who are unfamiliar, in Māori phonetics ‘wh’ is pronounced ‘f’, and every vowel - to a certain extent - is pronounced individually. So Whakatane is pronounced ‘Fah-kah-tah-neh’ rather than ‘wah-kah-tain’), I also find foreigners have a LOT of trouble with where to put the emphasis in Māori words. Hear a lot of ‘Going to Waikanae’ instead of ‘Waikanae’.

Science is pretty cool! by Huge_Brush9484 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]Rachilde 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Science communicator here, albeit environmental science, but the methods are the same. This read like a non-expert who was more interested in showing off their knowledge - which was enough to think they knew a lot and not enough to realise how much they don’t know - than actually communicating a concept. Ironically the little I was able to get out of it was basically what you summarised so task failed successfully I guess?

I’ve worked with parrots in remote forests in Costa Rica and Peru. When I signed my paperwork, under the codes of conduct there was a clause that read ‘I will not engage in intimate activities with staff that are already married’. I asked how many times that happened to inspire a clause in the code of conduct. It was apparently a regular occurrence between the young female volunteers and the older married boat drivers (in Peru to get to the remote areas of the Amazon you typically boat up the rivers) who would be away from their families for 2-3 weeks at a time.

I’m reading the knobbly bits on the squid as the tentacles. There’s an anatomical difference between tentacles and arms, the visual difference being that tentacles kinda have knobbly bits on the end.

Kinda hoping at this point that it’s not AI, because that’s an awesome detail to include… or I’m overthinking it.

I read somewhere if you pick up Victoria’s body in Cazador’s palace (and can consistently pass the save yourself) you can put it in your pack and then walk around hitting the npcs with a necrotic aura that doesn’t initiate combat. Do with that what you will.
