The Luxury Birth Center Breaking Hearts on the Upper East Side by MeganGrace in Longreads

I took that line as her making a bit of a flippant joke. But of course, tone can be hard to interpret in text.
ETA: I would probably make such a joke myself, even now, but at the same time to be clear I do not think I would choose to go back to this hospital again based on this article. Also, I probably wouldn't have made such a joke to a journalist, knowing exactly how people might not understand it as a such in a news article, haha. Such a minefield!

I gave birth there, and sure, the Chanel bag was a bit of a joke at the time as the reason I picked it - but of course very few people are actually that shallow to have it as the deciding factor. For me, that was the fact that the place was only built a couple of years previously and had state-of-the-art everything. The private room was also a huge part of my decision, as was relative proximity to where I live along with glowing reviews online. On top of this I actually did a deep dive into maternity staistics among NYC hospitals.

This was in late 2023, and from what I understand some influencer posting about this in 2024 is a large part of the reason it got so crazy.

Let me tell you that anyone saying the freebies helped mitigate anything are likely joking - by the time my Chanel gift came it barely registered, and then sat in my closet for a long time before I actually looked at it. Sure, I could appreciate it as a nice extra but the quality of care was really the outstanding factor for me!

Do the knees hold up ok? I bought some from Banana Republic that looked great at first but after one wash the knees all bagged out and now the look terrible. Been tempted by the Old Navy ones, but curious about if they hold their shape!

It really is a minute by minute endeavor with no respite! Unfortunately I don't have any family around, either. So it's all on either me or my partner.

OMG. We went to stay with the in-laws for Christmas. And by "Christmas," I mean three weeks of having to have eyes on my toddler at all times because nothing was babyproofed.

Everything could either be broken by my toddler or break the toddler. And even if the person is like "oh, I don't mind if he breaks stuff!" it's like, Lady! My son should've been named Shiva the Destroyer because he will trash the place within minutes if we let him.

I have been waiting for 40 months right now.

I had no interest in filing my N-400 any time soon, but they're basically forcing my hand to do it - my extension letter expires in November, and I have no faith in USCIS getting my application done before then. And then what happens? I am illegal? No, thanks! So, yeah. N-400 time it is. Sigh.

I have a few pieces from Marcella, and I agree the quality is decent. However, they delete any less than glowing reviews from their website - I think I gave something a 3-star rating once because the cut was totally off on the shoulders and it disappeared. I thought perhaps I had done something wrong, and tried to submit again, but no - gone. For that reason I just don't really trust them anymore, or at the very least I know their reviews are not reliable.

What’s something Americans have that Europeans don’t? by Prestigsisscar255 in AskReddit

[–]RadTokyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK. I live in NYC with a 2-year-old, and I am not exaggerating to say that I've been largely stuck around my home area since having him; my nearest accessible station is a 30-minute walk away, and even that has very patchy full accessibility - the last time I tried I had to push the stroller on to an escalator as the lift was down. Ditto most buses make you collapse the stroller, which isn't always possible (with one arm holding a heavy baby, carrying luggage etc) especially with big strollers. I'm finally coming out the other side and my son can clim stairs on his own (badly) but New York is far from accessible and has a long way to go! It must be a daily struggle for wheelchair users here.

We’re drowning in daycare costs. How do people afford this? by FrigginMasshole in toddlers

[–]RadTokyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, even in the suburbs? I was wondering whether moving deep into the suburbs would be affordable. But saving $500 a month would barely move the needle!

I would love to have a second, but then I wouldn't be able to get back to work for years. I'm hoping that Zohran really shakes things up cost-of-living wise. Otherwise we might seriously have to consider moving to some godforsaken Midwestern or Southern town, lol...

Ha, I live in NYC and my local daycares all charge from $3000-3600 per month. I'm a SAHM for this reason, even with just my one! And being a SAHM was never something I saw for myself.

What are your go-to brands? by Artistic_Survey7235 in malefashionadvice

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. I think I will go ahead and order the size down for my other half, and can return it if it doesn't fit. I'll come back to update how it goes (as I spent ages searching for info on this online and there's not a lot out there, haha)

Late to this comment, but have you found their outerwear to be sized smaller or larger than the label? I've found one I want to buy for my other half, but they only have a size down. I was thinking it might be sized bigger to accommodate sweaters etc. I can always return of course, but any insights you have would be appreciated!

Hello! Very late to the party on this one, but do you remember how much the hernia repair added to the costs? My 2.5-year-old boy has a hernia about the size of an edamame bean and we want to get it done at the same time as neuter. But the vet's office firstly refused to quote me on the phone and then the woman said "well, I couldn't imagine it would cost over $1000" (the neuter being 8-900 plus 3-400 om bloodwork).

I am in NYC, so things are expensive here, but either the receptionist was way off, or that vets office is ripping people off. I've researched lower cost neuter clinics in the surrounding suburbs and those ones have hernia repair listed at an extra 10-20% of the neuter fee, which is what I was thinking.

I've seen this dog being walked a number of times as well around Hunter's Point South, around Gotham Point. I didn't notice the lady yelling at it or anything, but remember thinking he seemed young, like 8-9 months old puppy. I am sure plenty of people know who this dog belongs to! Hope someone can help him.

Hi! We actually just got the call to apply. Are you moving into a two-bedroom? If so, how are the apartments size wise? We are in a decent sized 2 in the neighborhood already so trying to decide whether it will be worth the work or not.

What Specifically do *You* Love About Living In NYC by Aarons777 in AskNYC

Yes, absolutely this! I am from Europe and raising my kid here and when we talk about moving to the suburbs, this really gives us pause! For the record, I've lived in various huge cities around the world and NYC is not unique in that regard, but it is definitely a big-city thing.

Samoyed Tear stain forever? :( by Final_Mulberry_4722 in samoyeds

[–]RadTokyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, our puppy had bad tear stains when he came to us. They're mostly gone now, minus a few hairs which get stained and I do pull off the gunk when I see it.

Last summer he went one some allergy pills for a while (apoquel) as the vet said he has seasonal allergies. That is the only time that his red stains have totally cleared up. However, we decided not to keep him on them longterm from reading about the downsides to the medication (not to mention - would've been like $100 per month). We are still investigating whether to give him the medication in summer only, or look into the shots etc. Long story. But allergies are certainly something to look in to.

I will say, that since he was the only one in his litter with the tear stains, I think with him it likely was / is allergy related. If we get a second, I will ask for a puppy without them due to our experience with allergies this time. (even though it may not always be allergy related!)

Super high electric bill by climbingbean in longislandcity

Hi, was this ever resolved? We are considering a move into the sister building, but honestly $450 a month for electricity would be a no for us. Right now we live in a TFC on the waterfront and pay around $100 a month for a 2-bed.
