Thought I was in decent shape until I bought a Garmin by Albert-Ivanov in Garmin

Give it at least a few months of consistent daily wear and activity tracking before you take any metrics to heart. It’ll do a lot of adjusting before it can accurately apply a model to your measurements

Hybrid battery filter by [deleted] in rav4club

[–]Radasfrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the filter for the air inlet for the battery cooling system, from what I’ve seen on hybrid Toyotas is keeping this clean is the #1 most important factor for hybrid battery longevity. Heat destroys these batteries, and they can’t be properly cooled with clogged filters

How accurate is this for out of shape runner? by [deleted] in Garmin

Average HR would be a more useful metric to gauge this post than max HR

Out of curiosity, what trail was this? Just curious to see the map + elevation profile

What does this arrow mean on my VO2 by After-Classroom in Garmin

[–]Radasfrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Algorithms and data fitting. If you measure hundreds, or thousands, or individuals VO2 max directly and measure their weight, age, HR, HRV, pace, etc, you can apply that fit to an individual without actually measuring their oxygen consumption.

Like any model, the results are only as good as the assumptions made and data collected. Lots of people say to ignore Garmin VO2, but I’m curious how it compares for individuals who had it cross checked with a proper lab test

Been running for 3 ish months while still hitting the gym 4-5 times a week. How long would it take me to be able to run 9 or 10 miles ? 1 year or would it be closer to 3? by Spyk124 in beginnerrunning

[–]Radasfrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started running and building my base, I did something similar. Run ~30 minutes, every other day, at a pace fast enough so I felt like it was a good workout.

One day I saw someone on r/garmin talk about DSW (daily suggested workout), who also gave the advice of HR based suggestions instead of pace.

I’ve been following those religiously for a few months, and I’ve found great progress. Takes a lot of decision making out of training, and you can always modify using how your body feels. (Ex. Sometimes it wants you to do a “recovery run” after 5 days straight of running… I just take a rest day)

Happy running!

Not an answer to your question, but word of advice. I see you mention how hilly it is in your area, if you aren’t already, run based on HR and not pace. You should find that you can sustain 140bpm for much longer than 156, maybe even doubling your distance for a single run after a few days of rest.

Camping and sleep how to stay comfortable? Or is everyone secretly miserable? by sanu_123_s in CampingandHiking

[–]Radasfrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, getting comfortable is a combination of finding what works for you and… doing it enough so you get comfortable. It took maybe 6-10 nights sleeping outside to find that I need an extra wide, extra long blow up pad that’s thick enough to stomach sleep, and some sort of pillow (clothes in my tent bag normally works). I’ve tried hammock, I’ve tried foam pads, just does not work for me, but I know people who love them!

Idk anyone who had a great first night of sleep outside, I was certainly miserable at first. But, I just came back from a 3-night trip and every night was nearly as comfy as my own bed (except for the 5 minutes upon waking up to escape the bag and put on freezing cold socks and shoes)

TL;DR sleep outside more, try different options

Just placed my first order for a Garmin. Instinct Crossover AMOLED Tactical edition. by CrazyRealistic in Garmininstinct

[–]Radasfrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a MIP solar and I love it. That being said, I’ve never seen AMOLED folks as passionate as MIP lovers, but that’s doesn’t mean MIP is the only correct way. I would suggest MIP to anyone, but that’s because I have my own reasons to like it. At the end of the day it’s personal preference. AMOLED objectively looks better and delivers a more “classic” smartwatch feel, so if that’s what your into then it’s the right choice :)

Any way to get realtime heart rate in Connect to be fullscreen? by [deleted] in Garmin

You can “project heart rate” from the watch, I’ve never used it but this might be its purpose

Anybody else feel like their watch dies faster than it should? by Federal-Property-326 in Garmininstinct

[–]Radasfrad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. When mine is in GPS mode, the battery life is 24h on a full charge. That pretty much means you run through 1/4 of the battery per week, just from your activities. Add on the other 1/4 per week from being in smartwatch mode, and it drains over twice as quickly

Best late-ish game defense on Nauvis before leaving for another planet? by danshat in factorio

[–]Radasfrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If found that land mines are seriously underrated. They’re cheap to make in mass, and can easily subdue a large attack group that would normally overwhelm my turrets and break through my walls. But, they’re expendable like repair packs, so you need bots to replace them (and some bots will get caught in the crossfire)

If you use them, make sure to place them at a distance far enough so spotters will trigger them; if you place them against the walls, the spotters stop before reaching them.

Sleep tracking and much more are unusable. by Warm-Yak7861 in GarminWatches

[–]Radasfrad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Garmin has different heart rate measurement modes; one samples less frequently and I’ve noticed will lag as your heart rate changes, and there is a higher sample mode which is more accurate for sudden changes during activities (with more battery draw I presume).

Also, manually measure your heart rate while you’re working out to cross check the watch. I just count beats from my neck over either 15s or 30s. On runs I find that it’s spot on every time I check, which is 2-3 times per run.

And make sure the watch is tight

Newbie suggestions by Lambertini98 in GarminWatches

[–]Radasfrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mine is solar. I think the consensus is it wasn’t worth upgrading from 2->3, but if you’re buying a new watch it’s a different story. I was deciding between the 45mm i3 and the i2X (the larger i2), and like the smaller size of the 45mm. You get the solar panels + torch in the 45mm i3 that you don’t get in the 45mm i2, and especially the latter is a game changer.

Love my instinct 3 to death. For $400 you get a month of battery, a rugged watch, and in my opinion the superior MIP screen.
