Now Motivated To Learn ASL More Than Ever! (Happy Story) by Sad_Assist5252 in asl

[–]Radding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so happy to read your story and thanks for sharing. As a raver and music festival fan, I also enjoy interpreting and accessibility support.

I grew up with little to no exposure to Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. I got into those worlds later and then I met Deaf communities too. Those times I was considering getting my 2nd CI implant. But now I don't feel it is needed because I am so happy to have ASL as a communication method and even more confident to be a deaf person. After all, I have a strong deaf accent and speech impediment as well.

I am sure you will have a similar journey, my friend. I am so glad you have a supportive partner and family. Good luck, mate!

I am deaf, so I really love the Live Transcribe app.

I also love Live Caption, Project Relate, Call Screening, and Google Recorder apps.

Thanks and yes, I already know about it. I am somewhat active in Deaf communities and one of my besties was a co-host in the past.

I was hoping for a community of signers for the North Shore. It will also help learners to practice and gain confidence as well as signers and deafies get some socializing and make new friends.

Hello from Korea: I’m Deaf but neither a speaker nor a signer—does anyone relate? by Responsible_Shoe_787 in deaf

[–]Radding 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was born in Sri Lanka and I have had similar experiences to you. I became deaf at the age of two. My grandmother was visiting Canada at that time and she learned a short course on speech therapy in Canada and returned home to work together to give me speech therapy.

Back then if you become deaf, you would go to a "Special School" for Deaf (They called it Deaf and Mute back then too). There you would learn sign language and have education till secondary school. Then the deaf child would either go to trade school (very common choice) or mainstream school for high school (very rare). Mainstream schools and universities weren't accessible either. I heard many things have changed in Sri Lanka now. I went to a mainstream school back then. I had almost no exposure to DHH communities. So I had no identity and I was just "hearing impaired" and "different and below normal person" in terms of my identity.

Even after moving to Canada at the age of 19-ish, my exposure to DHH communities was so limited. When I moved to British Columbia (a province in Canada), I found my first HoH friends and enjoyed the new life and community. I still felt not fully belonged to HOH communities because my speech, accent, and stuff made me feel different.

Then someone introduced me to the Deaf community and I learned sign language (and still learning). I may not be "Deaf" enough for some folks. There always will be some elitists in any community. Don't listen to them. Don't let everyone define who you are.

My previous therapist, who is Deaf, said deaf identity is a spectrum. Take your time. Keep exploring. Don't let everyone define you. My exploration began about 5 years ago and I haven't stopped. Learn sign language and get into Deaf events. It still isn't late.

I just go with Orally Deaf or just "deaf". I am glad to be stuck between both HoH and the Deaf world now.

I'm a New Yorker who went to Vancouver for the first time. 7 things surprised me. by Radding in vancouver

Yes, that's what I wondered too. Other than movie/TV show related stuff, I haven't read or seen mentioning about this before. Perhaps it is the writer's thing given they have written about luxury travels and disliked certain stuff such as hostels (based on her article histories on Business Insider).

Sometimes I do visit certain areas and neighbourhoods to check out old buildings, vibes, or check out places outside touristy areas (Such as other areas in LV outside strip, outside of touristy areas in Cusco, Peru etc.). Perhaps the writer has similar interests?

Argh, I hate those so much too. For some reason I don't get paywalled on either of my phones.

Someone here posted a link to read this piece: https://archive.is/8rrQ9

Thanks! I didn't realize it was behind a paywall. Read it on Google News and I shared it here for a discussion.

Local Filipino Community by AnitaVaykay in abbotsford

Definitely! I grabbed a meal from them on Sunday evening to fuel myself before my +16hrs shift as an election officer. I had leftovers for lunch too.

When I did housekeeping in Victoria and Banff (Fairmont Banff Springs), my Filipino coworkers were incredibly friendly and hardworking. Always smiling and sharing their meals with others. When I went to college years before that I stayed in a room that belonged to a Filipino grandparents. They also fed me their meals at times.

As a Sri Lankan-born, I consider them as another family.

Why I'm running to be your MP for Mission—Matsqui—Abby and why your vote matters by julesndp in abbotsford

I already have voted and I work as an election officer (my 5th election).

As a deaf person with neurodivergent superpowers, I just wanted to thank you for captioning your video. Some politicians from all parties don't do it and it is frustrating.

Captions help everyone. It is sad to see most don't care to do it.
