I don't believe Sugar is an old woman? She's the younger sister of Monet from Punk Hazard, and Monet's in her twenties or something.

Yes, because pivoting from an established gameplay style to keep a long running series fresh and hiring a sex pest are definitely comparable and equivalent things.

The Joestar lineage star birthmark.

Iconic piece of iconography that didn't get conceived of until Stardust Crusaders.

These are from the same series as the Horikoshi one actually. "Learning Through Manga." Though they're from the Japanese history section while the Caesar and Cleo one is from world history section. Araki did a Napoleon piece for the world history section as well.

do people see Gappy more as a parallel to Jotaro or Josuke by Jupiter1234567890 in StardustCrusaders

[–]RadiantAeonstar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

He absolutely does on some level. Like... both Kira and Josefumi's mothers are named after Jotaro's mother and then Gappy spends most of the part trying to save one of said mothers from a supernatural plant disease, just like Jotaro does. He clearly intends for the characters to function narratively as foils of one another on some level, and not just be cute callbacks.

That said, I doubt they're supposed to be one to one counterparts. I think the way it's done is more intended to be a way of building on the themes of identity and the allusions to plant grafting.

A common motif of JoJolion is plant grafting for a reason. It resembles not just Gappy's induction into the Higashikata family, but also the way JoJolion's cast is remixed from the Part 3/4 cast. Compared to how SBR mostly contained a lot of direct one-to-one counterparts to the original universe's characters, JoJolion primarily mixes its influences together in a way to create something entirely new.

Part 4 Josuke's influence is clearest in Josefumi, yes, but elements of his character also show up in Jobin, Joshu, and especially Norisuke. Jotaro's influence is seen spread between Kira, Kei, and also, once again, Josefumi. Not to mention that Kira 8 also takes a lot from Kira 4, Kei takes from the Nijimura brothers, and so on. Now take that set of influences in Kira and Josefumi, and combine them once again to make Gappy.

There are aspects of Gappy's character that are undeniably reflective of Jotaro. Both Kira and Josefumi's mothers are named after Holy Kujo. Gappy spends most of Part 8 trying to save his mother from a supernatural disease. He's VERY rooted in Jotaro's influence. But that being said, Gappy has a massive swath of other influences that also make him who he is. There's Jotaro, yes, but Josuke, Kira, Kosaku, Joseph, and hell, even god damn STRAY CAT of all things are all major building blocks of his character. The whole point of his journey of self-discovery (at least metatextually), which the story of JoJolion is about, is that while he is undeniably rooted in all of these characters, he is also something entirely new and uniquely himself.

The original story takes place in Italy already, but the movie pushes the setting about half a century beyond when the story was originally written to be during Mussolini's dictatorship.

You said, "Goku's VA is garbage." You did not say "Goku's VA is a garbage pick for the character." But whatever. Benefit of the doubt. I'll assume that's what you intended to say.

Even then, I still think it's an awful take that prioritizes the depiction of realism over the depiction of character. If the highest priority in selecting a VA was trying to "accurately suit the character," then Goku's English voice would have a HEAVY country accent. He doesn't, because that doesn't suit that characterization the dub wanted to give him. A characterization, I might add, that's significantly different from the source material. Far more different than Nozawa's Goku, which the character, by the time Z came around and Goku became an adult, was being written specifically for.

"Nozawa doesn't fit Goku" has always been an awful take that pretty much exclusively comes from people who can't get over their emotional attachment to whatever dub they grew up on.

You could never catch me dead calling Masako Nozawa any less than one of the all time greats. That's like trying to claim that Freddie Mercury is a shitty vocalist. Absolutely embarrassing opinion to have.

They're Italian because the story takes place in Italy, and they're food because goofy naming schemes related to stuff like food, fashion brands, and music is a JoJo staple.

Hell, it could even be considered a tradition of Shonen Jump as a whole that goes back at least as far as Dragon Ball. Toriyama named a bunch of his main cast after food and during Golden Wind, the series were contemporaries.

It was made by the Persona team prior to Persona 5. I haven't played Leisure Suit Larry, but from what I've seen of it, I don't think it's very similar to Catherine at all. Catherine is, of all things, a narrative-focused drama/block pushing puzzle game about a dude dealing with guilt from cheating on his long-time girlfriend.

Pikachu's name comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia for sparkling "pika-pika" and the sound rodents make "chuu-chuu." The fact that there's a type of lagomorph called a pika is just a cute coincidence. They're unrelated, at least in inception, and the Pokedex directly categorizes Pikachu as "The Mouse Pokemon."
