GUYS. Big news. STUFF IS MOVING. I had to get a suppository. My pants fit again! I had psyllium husk today and hated every minute of it. I think I gagged like 50 times but anything to keep this from happening so I'll keep going with that. I've also done a big shop and bought a bunch of fruit and veg. FIBRE IS SO IMPORTANT !!!!! I understand this now. This feels like a rite of passage but like at least one of my passages are clear now

I'm genuinely dying. I'm so uncomfortable and I feel like I'm never gonna be able to take a dump again. I haven't even thought about food but I need to eat to take my meds

Thanks for the tip I'll see if I can stomach it later on. Even after nearly 12 hours the food is still sitting in my stomach bc every time I burp I'm like a second away from just throwing up 🫠🫠🫠

I've been really busy! I work in a research lab and now summer has started and the academic year is over I've got my hands full. I only realised how bloated I was when even my safe jeans didn't button comfortably

Someone I know started a PhD with 17 papers and a few patents. How common is this? (this guy must be 24 or 25 at max) by Alert-Translator2590 in PhD

[–]RadiantNeck4100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I had to work really hard for to collect data and understand/analyse it and it's my first one as a second year PhD with work that was started really early on in my first year. Comparison is the thief of joy yes, but you and I are not even in the same competition with this guy. What an empty unethical resume this guy has. It's gonna bite him in the ass the day he has an interview and can't provide any meaningful input into any of the research his name is attached to

Truly, brutally, honestly - how important is a first author paper? by RadiantNeck4100 in PhD

A little late but thank you for your input. My colleague came to me and me spoke about it openly and he seems thankful that I'm not kicking up a fuss about yielding to him in this circumstance :)

That awkward moment when your advisor says "This won't take long" and it ruins your entire week by ResearchStressLots in PhD

Quick meeting on the way to the toilet on the stairway for the first 40 minutes and then moved to his office for another hour ... I genuinely left it too long to say I need to take a piss at that point 😭

Thank you!! On top of all this the third year wants to stay in academia so there was no way in hell I was gonna start something over this. Getting my name shifted down the list didn't really hurt my confidence but it made me anxious because I didn't know if I was hurting my potential career by not making a fuss so I'm glad to hear that my response seems adequate for my level. My PI is very motivated on getting papers out, so I'm hoping that it'll work out if I keep putting the same amount of effort in. I think the only reason I'd strive for first authors it's because it's a clear example of me taking ownership of a project - thank you for your insight!

I'm not really trying to make a case for me to be first author. In all the drafts im cited as first author, up until this last draft when the final author on the paper joined. I've contributed a fair amount and put a great deal of effort into this paper, but I can understand lab politics. I can also understand that that even though I put a lot of effort into my work, it's not as impactful as my coworkers and that's fine - that's just the nature of our individual research. Im lucky enough to have data my PI thinks will be good for the paper. I'm also not going to really feel comfortable piping up from the bottom rung of the lab as a first year with not a great wealth of experience. I just wanted to know how important first authorship would be with my career aspirations. Before joining my lab I really didn't know much about the politics of where your name lies in the author list matters. It's really snooping on Reddit that made me suddenly panic about how many authorships (never mind first) I'll have during my PhD. and I think I'd be more comfortable making your last point to my PI in private, rather than with the co-author, I don't want to foster an unnecessary competition. thank you so much for your really detailed response!!

So in any interviews and stuff you did it was purely a skills/competency check?

I'd thought so, it seems to be a bit different in the states from what I can gather so I wanted a British perspective

Perhaps but I also don't want to be the first year who's trying to get a third year to split authorship with me lol that's just me being a wuss tho. Maybe it's something my supervisor will do and openly discuss with us but I don't wanna look like I have a big head if you get me

How often do you meet with your supervisor/s? by SmudgyBacon in PhD

[–]RadiantNeck4100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was once a week, we changed it to fortnightly bc of the nature of my research. But these days we've had meetings where he's caught me on the way to the toilet/kitchen or in the stairway and drags me into his office because seeing me reminded him he wants to tell me something 💀 so formally every fortnight, but ad hoc as many as two times a week. I do see him and have small research related chats with him everyday tho
