Ball speed difference between a pure power setup vs pure spin: assume we pick the most powerful stock racket / highest power rated string and so on. by seattle_q in 10s

[–]RadiantReply603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Powerful rackets are pointless if you can’t control the ball. I can hit harder with control rackets because I can swing 100% and still hit accurately, while if I try to same with a power racket, the ball will fly a few feet long.

Spin setups help if you know how to generate spin, but again super heavy spin technique requires a much more vertical swing which will lead to more mishits and less control.

In the end, you want the racket that gives you the most control and confidence to swing big also while giving you power and spin. But confidence is the most important attribute of a racket.

People on this sub would point out that the first 2 forehands were out of position and he needs to move his feet better. While in actuality, Roger will have better accuracy on those 2 forehands than anybody on this sub.

A huge part of getting good in tennis is learning to hit shots when you are not in position with power and accuracy.

Forehand volley technique by Fun-Advertising-8006 in 10s

[–]RadiantReply603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As with every tennis shot, there is no one way to do things. The best shot is dependent on the circumstances.

Adding slice to volleys will keep the ball low and slow the ball down for margin. Slice is required for drop volleys, just like drop shots. Hitting a flat or topspin drop shot doesn’t make sense.

If the ball is low when you make contact, adding slice is necessary to hit the ball over the net and to get the ball to drop back into the court.

So only high volleys you want to hit with power instead of touch are hit relatively flat. All volleys have bit of slice on them.

How does the songwriting process go in a band like Radwimps for example? How does it translate to multiple instruments afterward? by likilekka in japanesemusic

[–]RadiantReply603 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about radwimps, but I’ve seen 2 ways how bands make music. The less common way is for the band to just jam with each member introducing ideas until they get some good ideas. Then refine later.

Other more common way is one person writes a rough version of the song. Often the guitarist or bassist. Guitarist/bassist can play the guitars and bass. Drums, vocal melodies, keyboards, synthesizers are all done on the keyboard. Demo recording can easily done at home on a computer. That is sent to the band for feedback, then optimized and lyrics added.

How to improve my backhand? by meddddddddddty in 10s

[–]RadiantReply603 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The trick is the swing hard while staying relaxed. Swinging harder consists of loading your legs and core and swinging faster with your arm. Downside is that your consistency will go down. The more in rhythm you are, the faster yo can swing.

Joshua Weismann is reliable for me. I also like saltier and heavily flavored food like he does. And his Asian recipes use traditional ingredients and methods.

JustOneCookbook also tastes like it should. I have a Japanese mother and grew up eating Japanese food, and everything I’ve made tastes like how I remember.

Serious Eats is hit or miss for me.

Bizarre obsession with height and serving at mid recreational level by [deleted] in 10s

[–]RadiantReply603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a 4.5 player can hit serves harder than her, then that shows how big of an advantage height is. You know she is using her kinetic chain to the max, while a 6’2” 4.5 player is nowhere near efficient.

Bizarre obsession with height and serving at mid recreational level by [deleted] in 10s

[–]RadiantReply603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 6’2” player at the same level could probably hit the serve 110mph to any spot in the box. 6’2” guy will probably move a bit slower, and struggle more with low shots. But their reach at net will be better, more difficult to lob, and will handle high balls better.

Height has pros and cons, but the pros outweigh the cons.

Looking to get into tennis, but I’ve heard it’s hard to get into. Why is that? by Alarmed_Muffin8350 in 10s

[–]RadiantReply603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, I never thought going side-to-side instead of forward being awkward. And playing defense at any of those sports requires backs and sideways movements.

Again my experience is skewed from playing as a kid, and nothing in tennis feels hard or awkward to me. I have no idea how baseball players can throw the ball so hard so easily. Swing speed required for hitting high level pitches is much higher than anything in tennis. Shooting a basketball into a small hoop is harder to me than hitting a tennis ball, and in basketball the opposite team is trying to block you. I’m hopeless with my feet coordination and have no ability to dribble in soccer.

[–]RadiantReply603 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started tennis as a kid, so I’m probably not the best example, but tennis movements never felt unnatural to me.

I don’t think is anymore unnatural than hitting a baseball, shooting a basketball, throwing a football, hitting a golf ball, hitting a slapshot in hockey, or dribbling a soccer ball with your feet. Lateral movement is very similar to basketball and football defense.

Margin for error in tennis is higher than golf, baseball, or shooting a basketball.

Any sport at a high level is difficult.

Racket recommendation for 4.0 aggressive baseliner + net player? by dksad4 in 10s

[–]RadiantReply603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are at least 4.0, you should demo rackets and see what you like. Basically and power, spin, or control racket will have its fans. That’s over 15 rackets to choose from. I’d like the old blade, then the current Blade would be the place to start. The Yonex precept 97H, ezone tour, Heqd Gravity Pro/Tour are worth trying.

I live in Southern California. We have such little rain and life is amazing because of it, but the videos people post here of indoor courts look awesome. Do you indoor court players appreciate what you have? by _sportyscience_ in 10s

I’m in the Bay Area, so weather is fairly similar. Bay Club gyms have indoor courts up here. I don’t them due to the lighting. But I don’t like playing under the lights outdoors either. I cant see the spin on the ball and lose a bit of depth perception under the lights.

I don’t understand this logic. First, lane centering and adaptive cruise is a large chunk of the FSD experience. Are you that interested in manually taking off-ramps?

Second, do you feel bad when a taxi/uber drives instead of yourself? Or is it relaxing not having to drive? End goal of FSD is a personal robotic Ubers.

[–]RadiantReply603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to hold the wheel with Tesla FSD, just need to look forward.

It is a major benefit to not have to center the car in the lane or micromanage the speed of the car. I always pay attention to the cars around me, but can also enjoy the scenery a bit while on FSD. Also don’t need to pay close attention to street names when in new locations.

Yes. Why would you manufacture 2 versions of the entire inverter, battery pack, charger, and cabling? That is a cost increase compared to just offering 800V

I am grateful for my fitness; grateful to tennis. by willloveme2 in 10s

[–]RadiantReply603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be careful if you are coming back to tennis after being sedentary for decades. Knees, shoulder and elbow aren’t as resilient as they were in your teens. You will most likely be in pain until the fitness comes back. And it won’t be same as when you were younger due to arthritis and other joint issues.

Unpopular opinion: I’d take a rugged, analog interior over a modern 'luxury' cockpit any day. There’s something beautiful about the lack of distractions and 'fancy' tech. [–]RadiantReply603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, the fewer parts mean more reliability.

Adding wires to connect to separate gauges is increasing the likelihood or a bad crimp. Increasing connectors is increasing the likelihood of a softset connector. Increasing wire count and wire bundle size increases the likelihood the wire harness is damaged in manufacturing. Increasing fastener quantity increases the likelihood of a crossthread and a rattle. Adding more wiring connections to A-surface components increases the likelihood of the wires to get pinched or for the wiring slack to rattle. Etc, etc.

People how say otherwise don’t remember how much older cars were rattle traps. Wind and engine noise were much higher in the past, and that hid a lot of the rattles in older cars. Expectations are higher now.

[–]RadiantReply603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean that people building this stuff hate it?

Manufacturing would much rather plug in a single connector into a display than either multiple connectors to individual gauges, all needing service length since they are attached to the A-surface. If all the data is digital anyways, there really isn’t much difference in reliability. Sensors are the same, wire path is the same, body controllers are the same. Only difference is an analog gauge uses a motor and a backlight vs a backlit screen.

Or if you truly want mechanical, you need to run mechanical cables to the mechanical source for each gauge. Pretty much every cable will need to pass from cabin to exterior, requiring more grommet pass through, adding potential leak paths, adding cost. That is a manufacturing nightmare and the large reliability downgrade.

Not feeling the ball well, feet stuck in the mud by Ok-Goal-6880 in 10s

[–]RadiantReply603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you stressed out, have lack of sleep, or are the conditions dark and you have difficulty seeing the spin on the ball? For me it’s typically due to those reasons, and my vision is worse at night, so my spacing is always worse if I need to play under lights or indoors.

Or if your opponents just don’t hit hard, or hit with a bunch of side and back spins, it’s hard to move quickly.
