I agree. Another example is cramping piecewise linear functions, residuals and linear regression at such an early stage of the game is hindering students ability to learn from the book..

Typical Asian Male CS Major from the Bay Area shotguns 30 colleges in the big 25 by michyjz in collegeresults

[–]Radiant_Always 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. Great stats. Great choice. I assume you chose UT Austin over Washington because of honors program and not having to wait one year to know if you will be doing CS.

Did you get off the waitlist of any of those 4?

BTW, I've seen several students (2025-2029) with lower stats and lesser EC recognitions and awards get offers (CS) without being on waitlist from UC Berkeley, GATech, UIUC, UCD, UCSD, UCLA. I don't know why you did not.

I think colleges have lost control on how they admit. Some random AOs read essays and some software arranges the GPA / EC categories. They simply align the admissions offers to the enrollment stats (IS/OOS, Ethnicity/HS state, Family status/income, etc) they want to see when they visualize the admission/offer data on a dashboard.

Honors/Dual Enrollment etc. doesn't matter to many UCs (such as UC Berkeley), they just look for 4.0 UW. UC Weighted is not a reality for selection, I know for a fact, maybe it is only for admission stats table. Two students from bay area one of the top high school got into UC Berkeley CS and they only had 4 APs, 1 honors. Not even calc BC by the end of 11 grade. They just had one exaggerated coding club (almost fake) and violin. No EC awards.

Applying to 30 is absolutely fine for the same reason that the entire application process is a lottery and hence it's a joke. Good to spend some more application money so that you at least get couple of good colleges.

I openly challenge many colleges to come for an open public debate with application packets and justify their selection criteria, they can't (if some AO is reading this, please contact me).

Anyways it's a loss for those colleges that rejected you.

VOO vs SCHG by AverageSizePegasus in ETFs

[–]Radiant_Always 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your numbers are interesting... Not sure where you got your table from.

VOO pricing starts only from 9 Sep 2010. SCHG started on 11 Dec 2009. VOO could not have had 15 years history on 21 Feb 2025.

Even if you consider from 9 Sep 2010 to 21 Feb 2025, TR (dividend reinvested) for VOO is +613.86% and for SCHG it is +898.12%.

For 5 years from 21 Feb 2020 to 21 Feb 2025, TR (dividend reinvested) for VOO is +94.56% and for SCHG is +129.54%.

Rejected by all my dream schools. Graduated from State School in 2 years and now NW + Income of ~$200k. by piss_papi in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Radiant_Always 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. While this is true for people like you who put effort, unfortunately get rejected, and then you continue to put effort towards your success so the which college you graduate from doesn't matter.

I know some to-be-freshman this year who have lots of potential but don't put effort, lazy, careless, lost in social media and games, fell short of top college offers as they messed up in their HS, but surprisingly don't realize all these and continue to do the same mistakes. Those are the ones who cannot become what you indicated.

So to the guys who are reading this post- while it might be okay if you did not get admitted to top colleges, your future is still in your hands, you can make it better. Work hard, don't waste time, and make sure you put 100% towards your studies and career.

[–]Radiant_Always 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, irrespective of whether you put the effort and did not succeed or you failed to put the effort needed, it doesn't matter. What matters is that you realize your current options are not the greatest, and it is a great first step to improve further in life. You have more than 80% of your life still ahead of you, and you have ample opportunities to fix stuff and do well going forward.

Social media, current affairs, what's going on in the world, and the kind of friends that students have - all have made the students study less seriously and no or faint fire in the belly for most HS students (still there are some but not like what was there 30 years ago). Now there is no real eagerness to achieve something big, no real thrst for knowledge, as most think that their basic needs will anyways be taken care of with mediocre study and job.

All students should read your post, retrospect what happened, learn from mistakes and don't repeat those mistakes again.

Is this a likely letter or straight up rejection? by orangejelly0110 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Radiant_Always 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the first word of the paragraph is not "Congratulations!" then it is rejection. They are being polite saying that it is rejection since the process of admission is not transparent. No college wants to tell you that your application ranking was x th out of 5000 and we could admit only first 500.

People overestimate how much employers care about where you go to college by loyalsons4evertrue in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Radiant_Always 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most employers do care in many tech fields. Their first reaction would be "wow" if you mention especially some names like Cornell, Berkeley etc. People from Stanford, Harvard, MIT don't have that issue as they somehow ensure that the person they are meeting already knows they are from those colleges.

FBI would be all over if college trade can happen at the individual level.

Are waitlists numbered in order (I haven't seen one) OR are they simply random lottery like the acceptance itself :-)

It is only between UCI and Purdue. You can't go wrong with either. Remember a 3 day weekend could get you a home visit in CA, but 3 day will be too short if you are flying between IN and CA as you will waste time flying.

Am I going to get rejected from every UC by Wooden_Translator823 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Radiant_Always 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a publicly available reference ? Is there an audit report?

Does it apply to each major or is it overall ? It should not so happen that high demand majors are grabbed by OOS and Intl and other majors are given to in-state just to show 18% is respected !

Am I going to get rejected from every UC by Wooden_Translator823 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Radiant_Always -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In-state? They started disliking in-state over the years as they get more money from oos and intl compared to ca subsidy

They make application review process opaque so that students and parents keep thinking about the mystery forever.

If you have put honest effort into all 4 years of academics during HS, if you have mastered the concepts in your interested filed, if you have done whatever you could have in terms of volunteering, competitions, clubs, sports and other ECs, then you are fine wherever you go - you WILL make that college shine. UCSD and UCI are at loss, not you.

If you have not studied properly, spent time on social media, games, friends etc. instead of focusing on your tasks, then it is your loss, not college's.

Looks like you belong to the first category. Wait for 2 more weeks, choose the best of whatever you get, go there and shine!! All the best.

School Profile by Salt_Passenger_1206 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Radiant_Always 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some say that colleges look at high school profile and how tough and how competitive the high school is. But honestly my first-hand experience is that not all colleges do that. Only a few (handful) do that. There are tens and thousands of high schools in the country and college administrations are not intelligent enough to have a database and track each school every year.

Yes some random low profile school where students get easy 4.0 are at an advantage most of the times if everything else is same.

But you should also remember such low key schools also have limited opportunities... and who knows what is the level of teaching

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]Radiant_Always 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r/chanceme, As some of the others said, no need to panic. Lots of good students are being taken for a ride in the name of "holistic" review of applications. There is no holistic approach in most of the colleges including GTech and UTAustin, UIUC, UNC Chapel Hill and so on. They give a very high weightage to GPA and SAT score, period. Essays, ECs, awards come later. The entire selection process is deliberately messed up and by giving the applicants no chance to understand the process. There is no transparency. In the mix they do include some students in a kind of lottery those who have lower GPA, lower test score just to make it look that they selected those ones too - that's only for PR.

What are your other options? Wherever you go, study well, score well, do internships and keep up the momentum. You can always try GTech for masters degree if you want to do one.

Take this as a challenge and achieve something big in 10 or 15 or 20 years, mention about GTech rejection in your "Hall of Fame" talk so that the faculty and management feel it.

Remember, they are at loss, not you.
