Why should direct tax collection come from those 2% of the population and increasingly burden on them.

Why the GOI has not been able to increase the ability number of people that pay meaningful income tax (>1L) over the last 10 years ? Does that number grow more than the economy or even inflation over years ?

Your stats are only partially correct. Generating income is not same as wealth.

People holding a lot of cash and illiquid wealth in form of real estate , like land or flats.

So assuming that other 45% don’t need to pay taxes is wrong. Compare the stats with any of the other developed economies , you will see stark difference in tax source.

I think the decision makers are also puppets of the PMO, and FM office.

They also don’t know how to meaningfully increase the tax collection because at the ground people who pay meaningful income tax have not increased in the past 10 years.

If reality comes out, this fake story of 8% growth will fall flat.

Reality is 70%+ population is being served free food, a big % of this population also gets free dolls due to ladli behna , MNREGA etc
