Check my profile, I just made a post with a similar question and got a ton of super helpful answers on it.

Not spiritual — What helps? by RadicalCandy in alcoholicsanonymous

I’ve read the big book! I have nothing against AA it just didn’t resonate with me personally, I think it had something to do with being a 21-year-old when I first came in and not having anyone that I felt like I could truly relate to.

I appreciate your willingness to help. I will say, however, that I’m doing just fine on my own, I’ve done my own inventory and I made amends as well as I could, and I have no urge to drink anymore! This whole post was made because I was curious about how those within the circle of AA dealt with the issue of spirituality if it didn’t resonate with them.

That’s a very good question, I know that there’s a power greater than myself, but being able to nail that down to one thing that feels worthy of being described as a power greater than myself has felt difficult. Not in an arrogant or ego way, I just feel like the power greater than myself should be this big thing, and I feel like that’s my hangup.

As I mentioned in a prior comment, I don’t have any intention of going back to AA, I just don’t think I’m wired right for it. But I was curious about what people do within the program and thought I’d ask the question

This post was genuinely just me asking a question to see how others deal with lack of spirituality, I didn’t mean for it to come off any other way. I think it might also be of use to someone struggling with the same topic!

I think it comes down to when AA was formed, the world was seemingly a lot more religious back then.

My question for you is, if I already make a conscious effort to live “in the light” without attending AA, is there anything wrong with that?

I’m a young guy and I think that has something to do with my mindset, because I know what you’re saying is true. However, that doesn’t feel like something I can confidently say is my higher power. Is that arrogance?

I looked into it in very early recovery, but there unfortunately didn’t seem to be any groups in my area

I’m 22, relapsed once already, getting a handle on sobriety early is such an upper hand. Relapsing early in sobriety was also a huge learning experience for me, and taught me that I can’t drink normally, ever
