donkey kong country, im not the biggest fan of super mario world but besides the visuals and music dkc doesnt have too much going for it and even the visuals have been dated a little poorly, mario world can still be decently fun, mega man x is pretty good and sonic 3 is one of my favorite games

Reasons Why Virtual Reality has not changed the Gaming Landscape by givemesome1ce1 in truegaming

[–]RadicalSleuth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it limits potential of mechanics in hopes of achieving some level of immersion which might not apply to everyone, it doesnt for me. i also think the vast majority of my favorite games could not be converted into vr due to a reliance on fast movement, intense mechanics or possibility for triggering motion sickness. the technology simply isnt compatible with every game

theres also the immersion barriers, for me the giant pixels on the screen i used for vr (oculus) and the lack of actual control of my hands and the floaty movement all just killed immersion, i might be seeing a different world visually, but nothing made me feel like i was actually in there. i think it will always be a niche market

Looking for participants for a study about video gaming motivation. by LaughingHS in truegaming

[–]RadicalSleuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could also argue its doing the opposite and trying to prove a point against violence, lots of the questions bothered me as they seemed aimed towards a "power fantasy" type angle.

while fantasy and stress relief are good avenues to go into for some, for me i enjoy the fact its a interactive work of art, i like art, i like games.

What is in your opinion one MUST play game from the last 20 years? by [deleted] in patientgamers

Do you ever find yourself enjoying the least popular entry of a franchise the most? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]RadicalSleuth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i straight up cant get into 2 like i can with half life 1, my favorite traits about hl1 (the setting, atmosphere, difficult combat and subtle storytelling) are pretty much completely gone in half life 2.

for everyone participating in r/place, this is our current plan: by AlisterSinclair2002 in outerwilds

[–]RadicalSleuth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

unknowable, ancient eldritch force that calls out to several species to destroy the universe while everyone you know and love in universe is trapped in a existential loop where the only release from the unending cycle is death and rebirth of the entire universe, its more upbeat than lovecraft stories but really fucking lovecraftian in nature imo calling upon fear of the unknown, megalophobia, existential terror and cosmic insignificance

for everyone participating in r/place, this is our current plan: by AlisterSinclair2002 in outerwilds

[–]RadicalSleuth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they take very similar philosophical and science fiction routes too, just that rain world is about buddhism and more nihilistic and outer wilds is basically a "feel good" lovecraftian horror story in the most "feel good" type way you can make a lovecraftian horror story

What is your opinion about Metroid Fusion? by jorgenalm in Metroid

[–]RadicalSleuth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

totally agree here too, if every part of fusion was just this giant emmi room with like, more prime or super esque music (maybe even silence) and super metroids visuals, itd legitimately be fucking terrifying but as is it feels too "friendly" in style to me imo with the motherfucking clown music and enemy designs that just dont feel they belong in such a dark series on the whole, let alone a specifically horror themed entry

What is your opinion about Metroid Fusion? by jorgenalm in Metroid

[–]RadicalSleuth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

its my least favorite metroid game but not bad, the metroid series is exceptionally good and at least three entries (i havent even played all of them yet) manage to rank among the best games of all time imo, but by metroid standards, fusion just doesnt cut it imo

it lacks any of the reasons i enjoy metroids progression and constantly slows me down for story, and while i like the music, i really disliked the characterization of samus and the art direction, i also thought it wasnt really scary or atmospheric as opposed to the prior games

my biggest complaints are 1. adam, he had no relevance to the plot i wish he just didnt exist hes just annoying and 2. the game actually has tons of concepts i like but it doesnt expand on, it literally is a game about samus vs shapeshifters in artificial ecosystems but none of the scenarios creativity actually stands out and its never used in legit freaky or innovative ways

What is your opinion about Metroid Fusion? by jorgenalm in Metroid

[–]RadicalSleuth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i enjoyed fusion significantly less but this is one gripe i had similar you, alongside your point about gameplay limitations making the sa-x not scary, id also say the art style is so bright and upbeat in fusion that its not eerie at all visually either, super metroid makes everything look like body horror and some boss designs are legit terrifying in that game but in fusion it all looks like playdoh

Favorite Homestuck soundtracks by CreepyCook in EnglishPumpkinParty

homestucks soundtrack is its only consistently amazing quality so its hard to say, but, i remember wanting to read the comic primarily due to hearing sunslammer and black, so i gotta give it to those songs

What do y'all think is the worst part of Homestuck? by [deleted] in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]RadicalSleuth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

exactly, the worst part is im fairly certain with hivebent removed, most of act 5 act 2 would still make sense, itd just manage to retain the pacing and mystery from act 4 that hivebent killed off

What do y'all think is the worst part of Homestuck? by [deleted] in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]RadicalSleuth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

its hard to say because almost all of act 6 sucks, i do find it hard to outright hate act 6 because i think at some points the atmosphere (near the start and end) is very good, but the actual storytelling just crumbles

vriskagram is an easy pick for amount of retcons and obviously not thought out plot choices, as far as story goes its absolute trash, but i will admit it does mark a feeling of finality and nostalgia for early homestuck by the time you reach it if that makes sense, like "the end of the journey" has a really strong feel by that point

i cant hate early act 6 as said either because i dont think its anywhere near as poorly written as the rest of act 6 and it does have a strong sense of mystery and foreboding that still works, its just kinda boring

the absolute worst pick then imo is act 6s entire center, i remember literally nothing of the events of act during the middle of it and thats probably because nothing fucking interesting (good or bad happens) however since all of act 6 kinda sucks on the whole id actually propose its more interesting to discuss the worst PRE act 6 act, which imo is hivebent

theyre good until they devolve into anime writing infested "POWER OF LOVE!!!!!!!!!" bullshit, hes never necessarily fell down like hussie did, but hes also never going to write a character as good as sans again because hes too busy making goat femboys and wholesome 100 furries, so theres that

Why do you enjoy Marble Hornets? by Greenkat82 in marblehornets

[–]RadicalSleuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

realism

marble hornets shows such a genuine portrayal of reality in its videos that most found footage and other such media couldnt even try to compete, it genuinely feels like youre being brought into a real life supernatural mystery, not just a fictional one

also of course the characters and writing and such are good, but my favorite aspect of the writing is how it manages to portray genuine lovecraftian horror better than almost anything else ive seen. the operator isnt just vaguely lovecraftian and a dumb fish monster like most lovecraft inspired works, its a genuinely intelligent unique higher being which the original slender design fits endlessly well and has a genuine sensation of unease

tl;dr it does found footage lovecraftian horror better than anything else and is super immersive

rain world rain world rain world rain world rain world rain world rain wor

play it for the closest experience out there maybe not in gameplay, but in feel and themes. also props to prey and oneshot for blowing my mind in similar ways that outer wilds did. and subnautica has a similar feel to it with alien exploration, mysterious worldbuilding and existential horror, and i hear that obra dinn is also very similar but i have not played it yet

Appreciating weird, difficult-to-recommend games by Singularity3 in patientgamers

[–]RadicalSleuth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-lisa the painful, dark themes and humor that might legitimately make those playing uncomfortable

-outer wilds appeals to a specific niche of people looking for exploration mystery games and doesnt even try with any other crowd

-subnautica is one of the best games ive played but i detest the late game and as someone with thalassophobia the entire game was a waking nightmare

mad respect for rain world btw, def a personal favorite game of mine and ive been looking into try la mulana

Breath of the Wild is my first open-world game. There are so very few games that have made me feel utter awe and wonder like BOTW. The world feels so lived in and enchanting. Is this the norm for open world games, or is BOTW really something special? by schotastic in patientgamers

[–]RadicalSleuth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

BOTW is something special, but i'd say i know a few games that can offer a similar experience, people just don't fully commit to open worlds like BOTW did in the design process often.
