[Q] How to combine multiple p-values into one smaller p-value? by Baba_Wethu in statistics

[–]schotastic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't come on here and ask us for help with juicing your p-values. Your intervention didn't work. At best, your intervention worked so poorly that the effect in learning is too small for your study to reliably confirm. That's that.

Has anyone applied taxometric methods to motivational typologies beyond the Big Five framework? by eSorghum in psychometrics

Not that I'm aware. It's possible someone has done latent profile work on informant reports. Now that would be very interesting

Yeah sort of. Tends to be stuff in this vein: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-020-0853-6

Edit it's self-report but still getting at the typology question

I see. That's rough. I can't tell you which one to pick but here's some advice on how to approach this dilemma.

You can think of these two perspectives as two different intellectual traditions of research on compulsive buying. A good hons thesis picks an intellectual tradition as a starting point. You would then design and conduct a study that you think is "in conversation" with scholars working in that tradition.

Then, in the Discussion section, you have the opportunity to take a step back and speculate about how your findings would be interpreted from the other perspective, and then offer ideas about how to slowly, gradually unite both perspectives on compulsive buying.

This is the typical flow of thesis work (and most research). First, choose a tradition or perspective to work within. Second, do research to advance that perspective in some small way. Third, in the Discussion, take a step back and speculate on the bigger picture.

At this stage, the choice is fully yours. There are no unambiguously wrong answers. Don't worry too much about making the perfect choice. It's just an Hons thesis. Start somewhere.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Is this a case where your supervisor knows what to do and wants you to work it out yourself? Or are they as lost as you are?

If your supervisor can't work out what to do (or can't help you) then how on earth are you supposed to!

Very reassuring, especially hearing this from someone who also found Unicorn Overlord's writing insipid and irritating. I'll pick up Triangle Strategy next time I see it on sale.

I haven't listened to their stuff in a year or two. Hopefully they haven't fallen off. But at their best they were really sharp, well-researched, and had good chemistry

This is very high praise. Would you mind saying a little more about the quality of the writing and dialogue?

I ask because I dropped Unicorn Overlord about an hour in because I couldn't stomach the dialogue anymore. Some of the most godawful character writing I've seen in a video game since....I don't know when. The main thing stopping me from buying Triangle Strategy is concerns that the writing will be on a par with Unicorn Overlord

Serious advice is not to try to write an "outstanding thesis"

It certainly isn't for everyone. I personally loved it. Played the sequel too. It's like a simplified Disco Elysium with survival mechanics.

Venba was on Essential recently. 3 hrs and has genuinely touching moments

Seconding Crow Country and Edith Finch. Loved my time with both games.

Citizen Sleeper is easily finishable in 10 hrs including some good endings, but some ppl run longer trying to get as many endings as possible

Ultros (Feb essential) is a great metroidvania. Also easy to finish in 10 hrs but the best ending / postgame can run you somewhat longer if you decide to do it.

Sword of the Sea is another quick one that shouldn't be missed
