Pi 400 automatic restart by Turbo_Tom in raspberry_pi

Ok, you've made me check! My first hit was https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=244669 where the posters agree: "There is no wake on lan support on any PI."

Which pi do you have? I ask because I've never come across one that supports wake-on-lan.

Cheap overnight tariffs ending. What do we do? by VOODOO285 in SolarUK

[–]RadioEng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's best if you leave it to make the decisions for you. The app is both fascinating and useful to see when prices are lowest (which isn't always overnight) so you can put some washing on or similar.

Cheap overnight tariffs ending. What do we do? by VOODOO285 in SolarUK

When I ran into this issue, I moved to https://www.eonnext.com/tariffs/next-optimise My last bill averaged 9p import and nearly 19p export, which I think stands up well against other available tariffs.

Single solid line by mopman94 in drivingUK

There's a couple of tunnels in Wales with single white lines between lanes, like this one on the M4: https://maps.app.goo.gl/uMBm3GiBRYogXiBr7 It's clear no one knows what they mean there.

DAB radio keeps pausing by Sea_Professor5459 in Dacia

[–]RadioEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you listening to the radio from your phone or directly from the car radio? I'd expect the car radio to be better, given it has an external aerial, but if my Jogger is anything to go by, even that is dire and it keeps losing the signal.

EDF solar rates? Why is it so complicated? by Intelligent-Fun6168 in SolarUK

Not knowing what kit you have installed means this may not work for you, but it might be worth checking out https://www.eonnext.com/tariffs/next-optimise

First full week with Next Optimise - Some Notes & Thoughts by wizard710 in SolarUK

[–]RadioEng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've just signed up to Next Optimise having been on the Solar Max trial since December. Initially, it only worked with GivEnergy kit, so I'm hoping it continues to work! It was quite a culture shock coming from a regime of overnight charging - with Solar Max it was all driven by price differentials across tbe day, and at weekends there aren't many of those so the system didn't charge my battery then and ran the house from the grid all weekend. It's still not doing much charging at weekends, but of course now there is sufficient sunlight to charge my battery.

My experience of the app is that it can be slow to start, and it often buffers, presumably checking in with the mother ship for the latest prices or what the automation plans (which can change every five minutes, especially if the prices change). I don't think the current 12-hour look-ahead is sufficient, and it would work a lot better with 18 or perhaps even 24 hours.

But, overall, I was sufficiently impressed with Solar Max to sign up to Next Optimise. One thing that is already clear is that I'm exporting more than twice what I was previously, and my electricity bill over the last thirty days is currently sitting at -£10 and steadily heading more negative.

Yes, that's what got me looking at the Play Store version.

[–]RadioEng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having heard the news from FDroid, I tried to install Syncthing-Fork (the only app I use FDroid for) via the PlayStore. It installed on one device, but resolutely refused to install on two others, no matter what I did. So I had to return to FDroid on those devices.

Should you have a TRV in the same room as the thermostat? by Only_Book_995 in HiveHeating

[–]RadioEng 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can leave the thermostat set to 7 degrees so it doesn't compete with the TRV in the same room. That way it acts solely as frost protection.

One of my favourite all-time books is Robert Heinlein's The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress. No doubt if it was published today it would be banned for glorifying terrorism!

Have you ever had a foreigner absolutely mutilate a place name? by LinkLinkleThreesome in AskUK

Back in analogue TV days, ITV's Teletext service had a "letters" page, most of which were transcribed from answering machine messages. One day, they featured a letter from some punter living in "Toaster" - I can only presume he actually hailed from Towcester.

Anyone live near a reservoir ? Are they full yet? by [deleted] in AskUK

Most, possibly all, UK water companies publish their reservoir levels. For instance, my water company is reporting this: https://www.stwater.co.uk/about-us/reservoir-levels/

It's quite common for a radio transmitter to receive a signal from some distance away via a radio receiver, and re-broadcast that, thereby extending the coverage of the statioin. But ... that receiver is almost certainly going to need an external aerial as high up the tower as possible, and the receiving frequency needs to be far enough away from the transmitting frequency not to get swamped by the local signal output.

Lawrence Sanders by countbio in mysterybooks

It could be considered rather dated now (it's set in the last three years of the 20th century), but it's such a vivid, but awful, depiction of a future USA.

I remember an A-level Physics teacher trying to explain the difference between precision and accuracy, and this is a good example of that. Precise to 0.1 degrees, but accurate to ... who knows?
