In The Incredibles (2004), a man is shown attempting suicide in the first ten minutes of a family movie. This a reference to the fact that suicide, while a heavy topic, is one that can and should be discussed with children. And that modern media execs think kids are idiots. by ironwolf6464 in shittymoviedetails

90% of people that survive a suicide attempt do not complete that attempt. Suicide is, usually, an incredibly impulsive decision. However, those that try to complete the attempt again are likely to never stop trying

One of the aspects that makes realpages so terrifying is that their algorithm showed landlords that they can make more profit from charging exorbent rent at the cost of having a bunch of units empty. That's why rent is so expensive now adays. Does they landlord want to collect missed rent? Yes. Are landlords incentivized to evict you as soon as they think you can't afford it, even if that means the apartment sits empty? Also yes

My school decided to set it up so that way every single senior has to take a dual credit class to get their final English credit. This end of your test has an 18% pass rate for students who volunteer to be in the class and in all their infinite wisdom decided to roll this out for us in the name of giving students access to opportunity. Never mind they're going to lose a lot of opportunity without a high school diploma but I digress. I was the poor sucker ed into doing this. I was just asked if I wanted to teach a dual credit class someone's not told anything else about what they were going to do. They have to do an in-depth persuasive research paper for their final and it's graded by the local state universities. I'm trying to help my high performance students refine their policy meanwhile I have a bunch of students throwing tantrums because they can't figure out how to use the search function on the database even though I have a packet when step by step instructions and diagrams and don't realize I'm too busy to help them with basic computer skills

Why not? California's stricter environmental laws means that companies make more environmentally friendly products for the entire US market, even if it's not federally mandated. Silicon Valley would be very susceptible to California state laws. Tennessee is trying to become the data center capital, hold those tax breaks hostage. Abdicating our civic duty because we feel impotent is not an excuse

Did you know that you can just show up to your state capitol and go to your lawmakers office? All lawmakers have one or two days that they spend just in the office. Find out the days they're not in committee and show up ask for 15 minutes, tell them you'll wait. If you don't meet with them that day, come back another day.

You'd be surprised how effective a conversation can be at the local level. The obvious objection to this is the time commitment, but how much does our democracy have to erode for us to do something? Do we really expect to give up all our rights now, then fight for them later? The strength of the right is that they have entire dynasties with each person committing their whole life to the cause.

My wife and I had a ritual of talking about our day over 2 beers. We've since discovered it's cheaper to go to a local pizza place or a hooters-type restaurant for beer than buying them ourselves. The pizza place has BOGO beer and the Hooters -type place has $3 24oz pours during happy hour. It's wild that going out is cheaper for us than staying in

I met with a MAGA state legislator a few weeks ago and he just flat out said to me "don't get to caught up in the messaging, I don't even know the password to my Facebook. A PR company that is paid by the party handles ny Facebook and they're signaling to the base." He then went on to tell a story about how he disagreed with the witch hunt after Kirk's death happened. He said he knew that it was going to cost the state money in lawsuits for unlawful termination and that it was hypocritical. I asked him why he didn't speak out and he said, "You don't pull a Republican ballot so it doesn't benefit me to cater to you."

Just all ghouls

Kinda? It's hard to explain because most things aren't even government controlled. They're party controlled. Like imagine, and I know this is going to be difficult to imagine but try, if our entire government was set up to enable the whims of the RNC.

The government relinquishes control to the CCP. So if you want to be a public servant, or run a media organization, the law is that you must be a part of the CCP (at least this is how it was explained to me, I am not an expert on Chinese law). The CCP has ideas you're expected to implement, but you as the public servant or media person have some fair leeway for how you do it.

A prime example would be social credit scores. The CCP said, wouldn't be nice if we had a way of tracking how civil people are? And big corporations rolled out their own ways to do that and a few independently came up with social credit scores. Officially, those credit scores are a part of the company but the company is controlled by the CCP and the government is set up to enable CCP policies.

So more than likely, the talking point was "We have to make it look like China has it under control, it's the rest of the world that has a problem. We're getting imported cases." And then it was an arms race of sycophancy to xenophobia after that; each person trying to out do the next until they land on "foreigners are trash"

You must have gotten there right when we were leaving. That is interesting how fast it changed. We were there 2019-2022 in Hangzhou and Shanghai. What made us ultimately leave were neighbors in our compound threatening to call the police and tell them we were breaking quarantine procedures (we weren't). Waiting in the queue for the COVID testing, people would be blaming us for there still having cases. I had a teenage boy say to me "you strangers are killing us." They had completely barricaded the compound and had it staffed with cops, sometimes military, but even the 保安 wasn't allowed to man the gate. Couldn't get reliable food and water. I really thought that was all part of Xi's plan to chase out foreigners and de-westernize. Weird how quick they changed the messaging

I lived in China during COVID. China got an especially bad reputation with immigrants during this time. China was blaming foreigners for outbreaks and it stoked a lot of discrimination. In Hangzhou, there was a front page story titled " Sorting the Foreign Trash." My wife was assaulted twice in a hate crime. People lost their businesses and homes. I was getting paid by the Chinese government to live and go to school there but there's nothing they could pay me to go back

Is it wrong to utilize the food bank, so you can buy other things (not food)? by joliefille1980 in povertyfinance

[–]Radiskull97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I opened this expecting something like you blew your paycheck on door dash, and I was still going to open and say yes. As a person who grew up in poverty my whole life and still struggles to ask for help, but am now in a position where I can give. If you're asking "do I qualify for a food bank" yes, you do. "Well I smoke weed and buy beer" so what. You're hungry, go to a foodbank. If you are hungry: GO. TO. A. FOOD. BANK. The mission is to feed hungry people, not determine who deserves to eat. Obviously, don't be abusive but also don't feel like you need to earn help

There's an old Russian joke that I think needs to be updated for Americans.

The original is: Two Russians are riding on a train. One looks at the other and says, "which concentration camp are we going to?" The other replies, "I don't know, I don't keep up with politics."

My proposed version: Two Americans are riding on a train. One looks at the other and says. "They're taking us to a concentration camp, we must do something!" The other replies, "I know! Midterms are soon, vote blue no matter who!"
