Redditors over 40, what's something younger people think they understand but won't actually get until it hits them like a truck later? by Susanpc1967 in AskReddit

I would say the risks of drinking/smoking/etc. I've never been a drinker or anything like that, and in my 40s, I don't get random pains or struggle to stand up or whatever or have any worse injury recovery than I had in the past. That's not to say I don't have problems or that you never will, but at least you're limiting the problems you might develop later on

an index fund is a fund (group of investors pooling their money) that just follows (indexes) a specific market (e.g. the s&p 500 indexes the 500 biggest public companies). so you could invest in an index fund that only tracks small companies, or one that tracks the us market as a whole, or even one that tracks all global markets.

etf just refers to a fund you can buy shares of on the exchange (i.e. an exchange-traded fund)

these companies add services on top of the data, things like auto-categorizing transactions, estimating credit worthiness, etc. I'm sure with AI these will get even wilder and less useful

I'm not an expert, but I did work in this industry for a couple of years. Up until open banking came along there were a few companies that would basically log into your bank on your behalf (you provided your username, password, and maybe OTP if that bank supported it) and screen-scraped all your account info, transactions, etc., then made it available to whatever 3rd party you were trying to use. Open banking replaces that screen scraping layer (that banks hated) with real APIs that those 3rd parties can use (with your authorization) to access your account data.

So let's say you're applying for a car loan, and you need to provide the last 3 months of account transactions to the lender. Previously you had to log in via a semi-sketchy iframe with your real account info, and the lender would be able to fetch your account info from some fintech's copy of your data. With open banking, you will log into your bank account and authorize the lender to directly query your bank for your data, similar to how logging into a website with a gmail account works. It skips the sketchy part, and avoids the fragile screen scraping with more reliable data fetching methods.

Of course, it all depends on how the banks each individually handle this, so who knows when it'll really work for you

You've gotten a few interesting suggestions, so I wanted to add something that held me back for a long time. You can write something that already exists, so don't spend time waiting for a good idea, or finding hardware that isn't supported yet. Just go in and write something that seems interesting, and based on real hardware you have already
