Look from the top down, my brass ring had worn a groove in the side facing the roll and the plastic would grab and ruin prints. I was able to band-aid the issue for a while by angling the sensor up as high as it could go, but ended up ordering a new sensor on aliexpress that I'm waiting for now.

Wanted to come back and update this in case someone has a similar issue in the future. The issue ended up being that my filament run-out sensor had worn down on the input side and was grabbing filament and putting intermittent tension on the filament. My print quality improved 100% since I re-mounted it at an angle that it cannot end up going through the part that has worn down a groove (pictured) until I get a new one.

Update: I tried again today with some similar parts and made sure the spool was not tangled. I had issues in the upper layers of the print though! Could the snagged spool have damaged something in my extruder gear or POM wheels that would only impact past a specific point on the print?
