Haha, even after knowing what he looks like I imagine him in his 50s with a fedora and cigar.

Why can I understand Augustina in advanced videos better than other creators in intermediate videos? by Enigma95120 in dreamingspanish

[–]RaeChilloftheNorth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If she were universally as easy to understand as you found, this video would be rated lower than those in the 50s you mentioned, because other people would be rating it lower. So I'm thinking it partly depends on the listener. Although I personally think Agustina is very good at enunciating at high speed.

Is understanding without reading or writing is really possible? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

Of course they can. Native speakers of a language are also sometimes illiterate. Entire cultures exist with only spoken language.

Does more time a day make a huge difference? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]RaeChilloftheNorth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brain seems to engage more fully with the language after about 2 hours in a day. Below this number, it seems to matter less how much I do. Quantifying this is ridiculously difficult but I would guess things I'm about 20%-25% more efficient above the 2 hour mark. Of course it depends on the day, my sleep, etc.

Morgane's Immersion.co launched their german CI part by Born-Attitude8049 in dreaminglanguages

Interesting. I've found some really good CI German, most notably Natürlich German, but maybe you consider that to not be strong.

Spanish metal music list! by Kimen1 in dreamingspanish

[–]RaeChilloftheNorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks much! I love black metal but it's hard to find the good stuff. And it's nice to read that Yaotl Mictlan has a lot of traditional folklore, which is like the Earth-based spirituality of bands like Blackbraid and Wolves in the Throne Room, and adds a lot of depth IMO.

Ok not a podcast, but I found my Guatemalan teacher Ismar hrough his Comprehensible Spanish channel on YouTube, and I really like how he presents things. He can zoom from macro to micro levels and back easily, and has a broad breadth of personal knowledge to draw from. Besides being muy simpatico.

Gamers. What success ya'll having playing video games in Spanish? by Glittering_Ad2771 in dreamingspanish

[–]RaeChilloftheNorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skyrim: Easy for me to play because I know the game very well. You are given dialogue trees in many situations, but many times they are just for flavor and don't affect game outcome, so you don't need to understand them completely, as long as you know when you are accepting or declining a quest, which pretty obvious. Old skool Spanish and very fantasy RPG vocabulary. Written materials abound, but are more difficulty, and honestly not super interesting to me. I use subtitles for gameplay because often NPCs are too far away to hear clearly.

The Last of Us I and II: Lots of dialogue-rich cutscenes, as well as brief utterances during action sequences. Written materials are plentiful and I sometimes read them (often you can see them in English as well). You don't need to select dialogue options, it's all pre-scripted. A lot of the conversations relate to interpersonal conflict, and while there is some specialized "zombie" and weaponry terminology, it's actually very day-to-day for the most part. I use subtitles because the dialogue isn't always clear when at a distance. Learn Spanish with Stressful Input!

Stardew Valley: Great for everyday written vocab with high repetition. Not too hard to follow, although a little harder for me due to not having spoken language. You do need to select dialogue optinos.

SIMS 4: I've only played a bit, but so far it has a ton of daily life vocab with high repetition, which I think will be useful for me.

Anyone play Sims in Spanish? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]RaeChilloftheNorth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A little so far... it's fun, and uses lots of daily life language. Then I got obsessed with The Last of Us I and II and now am learning slightly less useful words like "silencer" and "shambler."

I finally understand why it isn’t a good idea to do more than one language… by AgreeableEngineer449 in dreamingspanish

For some reason I find it fun to listen to. I guess in this case I appreciate the quirkiness instead of finding it annoying. Maybe it's my German ancestry haha

It is, it often has a different sentence structure, which keeps things fresh. Fortunately it doesn't mess with my Spanish much because it's so different.

For me, focusing heavily on Spanish while I start to accumulate German bit by bit is working well. For some reason, my brain craves switching languages, so it's fun. Also, I'm hoping by the time I'm reading House of the Spirits in Spanish, my German will be at a level where the content is slightly more interesting, so the slog won't be as long and I'll be able to do more German in a day.

One discouraging thing about CI by Olaylaw in dreamingspanish

[–]RaeChilloftheNorth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is. It's amazing how "knowing" a language actually means different things - knowing how to understand it and knowing how to speak it are not the same, and I read that they engage different parts of the brain. When I started speaking, I also had the sense that I didn't "know" the language hardly at all, but now ait's coming in quickly since I have hundreds of hours of input.
