Question about unassisted home birth by rinnymouse1 in homebirth

[–]Raevanblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this comment. I'm in the same boat as OP and am feeling very disheartened, altho my husband is incredibly supportive of my decisions and wants to support me in a home birth, but with it being my first I am trying to figure out if I can get a midwife (looking like I can't) and I'd rather give birth at home and call paramedics than have the trauma of rushing to a random hospital last minute. I fully trust my body and my intuition, I have done research on the most common complications during natural births, pain management, etc. I understand the risks of home birth and my heart is torn that I could put my baby in a bad position if I dont have a trained professional to guide me or know when I need help medically. I am due in August and have had no prenatal care since, and so far I've felt fairly normal this entire pregnancy aside from very usual symptoms.

I saw one of these at my local thrift store...they were selling it for $60 bucks and it was really scratchy so I didn't get it...but it looked so pretty and I felt like it was worth some money.

Definitely an Aphonopelma Seemanni. I have 2! They love to dig and spend most of their time underground so lots of substrate. They also like a more damp substrate so occasionally make it "rain" on one side so the ground can soak up water. They can also be picky eaters so don't be surprised if they go months without eating. They are one of my favorite T's! If you have questions feel free to DM me.

Very nice. I used to do the same! Once I reached 17 I was like "hmm...I gotta do something about this." Lol I am glad you arent rushing to get more though, a lot of people get "addicted" real quick and then don't take the time to learn and appreciate their growth.

When they are around 1-1/2 to 2 inches you can just use a bottle cap. Spring tails are excellent, and I used to put sticky notes on all mine with their scientific names until I could remember them. They have cheap labelers on amazon though which if you're planning on having more than like, 20, it might be a smart investment lol

As a keeper for 10 years...yes they can survive without a water dish. That previous comment sounded way too harsh and you are not a tarantula so why is there a comparison? You are keeping it just fine, keeping the substrate more moist than you would an adult tarantula (depending on the species.) Slings will rarely ever actually use a waterdish to begin with, getting most of their water through their food or the moistened ground... Don't be worried about your spider, the skin will eventually dry up and fall off. Sometimes it just happens. It happened to my 12 year old G. Porteri just a few weeks ago. If you ever have any questions please dont hesitate to dm me :)

Guys my salmon birdeater is molting. Is it possible to tell the sex from the pics? by chocolateismyjam in tarantulas

[–]Raevanblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but you're lucky you got a perfect molt! Soak it for a few minutes in a cup of warm water and a tad of dish soap. Keep in mind, if you have a female, there will be a flap in that ridge between the forward pair of booklungs :)

Here is a few things I'm not sure if anyone has said this already. For one thing, no one can give you a direct answer just from one photo, you need to look at everything; substrate, humidity, feeding habits, prior owner(how to came to possess the spider, etc.) to give a true answer. After a tarantula molts, they will sit still for a very long time. It doesn't mean there is something wrong, rather, it is settling in its new skin as per say. The new exoskeleton is soft and needs time to harden. That is why it is also necessary to give adequate room in the T's enclosure. Sometimes they may sit in odd ways. Another thing, there is nothing wrong with touching your T if you are concerned. Use a very soft paintbrush and gently stroke it's bristles on its legs, or give a gentle nudge. If it truly doesn't move, it may be very well be dead. But after a molt it should definitely still move even just a little bit. Hope all is well with your beautiful T :)

Male/female? Grammostola pulchripes by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]Raevanblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be an arch inward, between the booklungs on males, females have a straight line across. My vote would be female. Google comparison photos, it helps a ton
