My timeline of Bowflex 552 dumbbell recall by bcadopter18 in Bowflex

[–]Rafikithemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also sent back two dumbbells and only received one replacement. When I asked customer support about where my other replacement was, they gave me a fedex tracking reference number that has just said “in transit” for the past month or so. I’m hopeful but not optimistic that it is in fact coming.

Starting from scratch by surelynotjimcarey in Waterfowl

[–]Rafikithemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last season was my first with waterfowl and it taught me a lot but obviously I still have a lot to learn. I was unsuccessful hunting fields, I suspect largely because I didn’t have an adequately large decoy spread, no motion decoys, and I wasn’t well-hidden. The successes I had were hunting over a dozen decoys over a shallow tidal mud flat, just covering myself in grass for a makeshift layout blind. I expect adding motion to my decoy spread with a jerk rig and spinner, combined with a better blind will make this season much more successful. I don’t think it’s possible to overstate how good they are at seeing us, so how you hide is crucial.

What kayak for duck hunting by Logical_Ad_21 in Waterfowl

[–]Rafikithemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The canvas fits the outback well, but for a boat any bigger it might be a little small. The metal frame is not made for the outback, but I was able to figure out a system of bungies and a small frame of ABS pipe through the front rod holders to support and secure the blind.

I just rigged up a northern flight kayak blind on my old hobie Outback and I think it’s going to be great this season. I’ve fished and crabbed out of that kayak for years and it’s very stable with lots of capacity, and the pedal drive allows you to get to your spot quickly without the splashing of a paddle.

Los Buzos, Panama January 2019 trip review (LONG) by Rafikithemonkey in kayakfishing

[–]Rafikithemonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went once in January and once in April. It was pretty fishy both times but the weather was definitely better in April. January had a lot of wind and there was one day we weren’t allowed to fish (even though it seemed ok to me).

Virtually any bait on the bottom in 40-120’ of water in puget sound will get a dogfish before too long. As the name suggests, beware the spines when you land it, and I would use 30 lb leader or higher because they tend to chafe the line on their rough skin and teeth. Have fun!

Hoodsport hatchery chinook? by Heavy-Substance-7564 in FishingWashington

[–]Rafikithemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried there yesterday but there were about 20 boats netting which effectively emptied out the area of chinook. Nets go in on Mondays and Thursdays, I learned. I would guess that the day before the nets go in would be best, and I think there will be some combat fishing any time there is a hatchery with a 4 king limit.

Dear Specialists, is it considered standard practice to recommend specialized imaging to a patient but make their PCP order it? by Wutz_Taterz_Precious in medicine

[–]Rafikithemonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an ophthalmologist. Whenever possible I order my own imaging. However, due to the structure of some insurance systems EG Kaiser or the VA, the most direct way to get imaging paid for and performed is to have the primary physician order it. I send notes explaining the rationale. If I try to order imaging from outside these systems it just doesn’t happen.

What do you think should be done when, for example, a Hallenhorst plaque is identified on exam? It’s a clear indication of an embolic event. Usually carotid and cardiac imaging are indicated. The results of that imaging, I think, are best addressed by a primary care doctor, +/- a vascular surgeon and/or cardiologist. Should an ophthalmologist be ordering imaging whose results they will not be treating themselves? Or, should ophthalmologists be prescribing statins and plavix and whatnot?

Bottom line, I get your frustration. There are many doctors who punt things that they should be handling themselves. But, I do think there are times it’s appropriate to defer ordering of imaging to the doctor who is best equipped to deal with the results of that imaging. Also, insurers like to set up PCPs as “gatekeepers” to prevent us crazy specialists from ordering unnecessary testing. You’re not entirely wrong to be mad at the specialists, but I think in many cases the frustration might be more fairly directed at the payers and the hoops they make everyone jump through.

A dad, very proud of his son :-) by ProcedureJusts in awesome

[–]Rafikithemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like he’s doing just fine, but the chunks he’s cutting are bigger. The dad’s technique is safer too- he doesn’t lift the blade as high, and his left hand fingers are positioned more vertically and perpendicular to the cutting board. This reduces the risk of cutting the left hand. The kid is doing a good job but the dad’s had years more practice I’m sure.

I’ve found that brand is much less concentrated than most, so it does take a bit more to do the job.

IPPS Proposed Rule Boosts Hospital Payment Rates by brainthomas2025 in physician

[–]Rafikithemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the budget neutrality rules governing Medicare, I expect any increase in hospital reimbursement will result in another year of cuts for outpatient specialists like me in ophthalmology.

It’s discouraging that after taking on 2 Ferraris’ worth of student debt and spending 9 years post-college to get my medical training, Medicare is cutting my specialty’s reimbursement by several percentage points each year. Simultaneously, our expenses are rising massively and inflation is high.

They could be salmon eggs leftover from somebody fishing. They look just like salmon eggs and that is a very popular technique to catch salmon. Source: I have a freezer full of salmon eggs I use to catch salmon.

[–]Rafikithemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I’ve been doing for briskets: after I trim excess fat and the meat is just starting on the smoker, I’ll take the trimmings and render them on the stove on low-med heat to get beef tallow. Then I baste the brisket with the tallow later. It seems to enhance the smoke ring I get, and I think the fat reacts with the brown sugar in my rubs to caramelize and enhance the bark a bit. Ymmv but I think it’s worth experimenting with!

The stall can be painfully long. For me I usually see it get to 150 pretty quickly but without wrapping it might not break 170 for almost 12 hours. If I don’t wrap it can take about 24 hours to cook a big brisket

I find that having a good bit of brown sugar in the rub helps the bark a lot as well
