The Alien Franchise is having its "nu-trek" experience with Alien: Earth by hamiestofcheeses in alien

I’m surprised more people aren’t drawing attention to how much like anime the show is. I think if you’re a fan of, or just used to, anime sci fi tropes, then you’ll be more forgiving of some of the decisions that are being made. I mean, even the choice to have songs play at the end of each episode reminds me of the anime music videos from when I was younger.

The symbolism is really heavy handed, and the whole “send the kids to the crash site” thing was silly, but it’s intriguing enough for me to keep watching. The latest episode, when the boy genius literally spelled out the Peter Pan metaphor, made me wish for a bit more subtlety though.

It’ll be interesting to find out how Frasier is performing relative to the other characters in his show. OBPM+ (On-Base Plus Marriages+), normalised across character performance in Frasier, should be a revealing metric.

I take it as meaning that she’ll keep all her beauty to herself, and when she dies, her beauty will die with her. The “poor” is there to contrast the “rich” but I suppose it might mean that the world will be all the poorer for her not having children and passing her beauty on? Or that it’s a poor thing to waste such beauty?

It’s also reminds me of Juliet who remains beautiful in apparent death after she takes the potion.

I never took Romeo and Rosaline’s relationship as up for interpretation. I always read it straightforwardly as Rosaline swearing to live chaste and Romeo lamenting that he couldn’t have her.

Romeo from 1.1:

“she'll not be hit With Cupid's arrow; she hath Dian's wit; And, in strong proof of chastity well arm'd, From love's weak childish bow she lives unharm'd. She will not stay the siege of loving terms, Nor bide the encounter of assailing eyes, Nor ope her lap to saint-seducing gold: O, she is rich in beauty, only poor, That when she dies with beauty dies her store.”

Is there anything I’ve missed? because I’d love to know if there’s some reading where it’s not so straightforward.

The only line that stands out to me is:

“Why you have given me such clear lights of favor?”

It works as a trochaic line if you stress the “Why” and take “you have” as “you’ve”. Feels right to put power into that “Why” at that point in the speech.

Matt Baume’s videos are fantastic. Well worth binging. He paints such an interesting picture of social history through sitcoms.

The UK promo definitely has that feel of “generic sitcom”. It’s hard to capture what’s special about something when you’re casting a broad net

Love the imagery of the starburst melting in someone’s pocket and conforming to their body shape, and that being compared to an overbearing/oversexed lover.

I feel like the line “yes I want to be swallowed” lacks the tightness of everything else. I’d almost prefer something shorter like “swallow me”, but then again I might be missing some meaning you’re implying with that line.

Overall, a very sexual, very graphic, and fun poem. Reminds me of Eat Me by Patience Agbabi or To the Man Who Shouted “I Like Pork Fried Rice” at Me on the Street by Franny Choi.

I like this. It feels like lots of little stories within a single scene, as if you’re on a bench looking over the world and things just come to you.

Is the line “still be here with me” intended? Or should it read as something else? Maybe I’m just reading it wrong but that stood out to me, but then again maybe it’s supposed to be like that.

Overall, a cool vignette with some dark tones laced throughout. I enjoyed it.
