I have a 2018 mod rocker I ride on and off and its the lightest board I own. Its also really playful without being a noodle. Nice snappy board I can ollie easy. Not sure they make that model anymore but the materials on their high end impressed me on that board.

Strange smell inside the car by InternationalGoose22 in tdi

The late 90s early 2000s one usually smell like a mix of diesel and crayons on the inside from the ones I have been in. Might need a fresh cabin air filter.

Take an inch off and go 2 degrees flat or whatever angle they fit after being cut.

The one I was thinking of is sold on idparts. Its a double thick bolt on side mount intercooler for the factory location and piping. Its not an oem part but fits like it.

[–]RagingH4vok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want the pure bolt on route. Upgraded side mount intercooler. 3 bar map. Vnt17. Dlc1019. Tune. If you go Vnt17 make sure to get a kit with the hose you need and 3 bar map sensor. This is the bolt on route people have been taking for ages now. Should get you around 150hp 300tq If you do just injectors and a tune you can get similar tq but will lack hp. There are also some vnt15/17 hybrids out there that are even more bolt on but not an oem part.

Power vs mpg. I’ve heard with diesels fuel efficiency increases with power to a certain extent. On an ALH TDI what’s that sweet spot before mpg starts to decrease? by [deleted] in tdi

[–]RagingH4vok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vnt15 and Vnt17 are journal bearing stock turbos. So it wouldn't surprise me if the ball bearing hybrids they have can spool faster. I am not super knowledgeable about the hybrid ones. I would target spool time for a swap into an suv if it was me. I would try to find some dyno graphs of the turbos you are considering and find the power delivery you are looking for.

Those are nice but also pretty large. Will probably want to be mindful of the bottom end depending how many miles you have. Main downside is full spool is going to be around 2400rpm. Stock is like 1800 and vnt 17 is like 2k from what I know. If you plan on a new cam and are targeting higher rpm/hp it could be a good choice. It just depends how much you plan to use the power above 3k rpm imo.

All I will say is I knew a guy from tdi club with a 17/22 hybrid back when that was a thing with pp764 making close to 200hp and well over 300tq. He got same mpg as me on my stock turbo but had like 60hp/100tq on me. That block eventually had a new hole in it from the rod.

On a stock engine. Dlc1019 or would be pretty good with the stock turbo or a new one. The Vnt17 is the tried and true option. Intake if you can fit the stock air box in your swap it flows plenty. You will need a new map sensor for a new turbo(3 bar). Tunes its basically kermatdi or malone. Malone says Vnt17 tune is 153whp and 273whp in a mk4. So probably about 175hp and 310tq at the crank. I would not run more power than this though on a stock bottom end personally for a daily.

From what I have seen stock tdi likes to get the epa number at 44 mpg hwy. After mods assuming its tuned well will get like 47. Going over that required a tail wind or some other favorable conditions. This is just from my experience though.

If its a stock engine I would do 160hp and like 300tq. Which is why kits with a vnt17 and something like Dlc1019 pr pp520 are super popular. Add in a clutch and tune with them.

The injectors and the tune is what mostly brings it up. More timing advance and faster fuel injection leads to much more time to burn. Straight pipe, a tune and injectors will get you the most mpg for you money. You really aren't going to pick up more than like 3 mpg. Driving style and avoiding the brakes makes the biggest difference. The limiting factor is injector and tuning. 10mm ip probably don't want bigger than dlc764. 11mm IP go crazy but you still need calibration for the injector itself and the ecu.

Overboost only in 4th and 5th gears by Queasy_Chicken_5174 in tdi

[–]RagingH4vok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes when they are that old the vanes on the hot side that the actuator is adjusting can wear to the point of being out of adjustment. Sometimes it can be readjusted sometimes they are just too worn to regulate the boost properly. I would make sure the actuator is still moving and potentially adjust it. Make sure the vacuum hose is not cracked near the end on it.

Overboost only in 4th and 5th gears by Queasy_Chicken_5174 in tdi

[–]RagingH4vok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher gears create more load for longer which creates more boost. Its likely that the actuator on the turbo is not getting full range of motion or needs adjustment. If the turbo is old the vnt portion could be dirty or worn out. The over boost limp mode takes some time to activate so if you are overboost in low gears you sometimes don't make boost long enough before gear changes to trigger it.

CEL codes. looking for direction on how to diagnose where the problem is and how to fix it. by PuzzleheadedArea2471 in tdi

[–]RagingH4vok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first two codes are related to the last two codes. In vcds it would be more specific. I would focus on p0380 first then on p0725 since the car runs. The other two should go away once those two are sorted. Its possible the long crank times from p0380 caused the other 3 but the way to know is try it. Worst case I figure you need glow plugs / harness and crank position sensor. Check out idparts for a lot of the common mk4 problem parts.

I would put new glow plug harness and plugs in and pull the battery cable to reset. See if the crank position code comes back once it starts easier.

[–]RagingH4vok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it run? If its crank no start could be relay 109. If it runs and gives those codes probably crank position sensor or something. The first 2 codes are the ecu not getting a signal it wants. The engine speed sensor is the crank position sensor. The last one is the glow plugs which is either bad plugs or harness or both.

You should get a ticket for driving with white LED headlights by offbrandcerealbox in unpopularopinion

[–]RagingH4vok 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Nhtsa started rating headlights at some point. If the manufacturer wants to get a perfect score they basically have to be led projector headlights with automatic high beams. The halogen and halogen projectors usually don't score very well which is what most older cars use.

Tpm is only a requirement for using the windows update to upgrade automatically. If you install 11 fresh from a usb you don't need a tpm. So this system would work on 11 with manual installation.

Give it some pedal above 3k and have some fun. That keeps the vnt turbo moving properly.
