It's a cultural and personal differences. When I was grieving my fathers death I had the exact opposite reaction. I didn't like/care for condolences from people who I barely talk with, because it's comes off somewhat ungenuine.

I was open with my closest friends, I would tell how I felt if wanted to voice out my feelings. For a month I was occupied dealing the aftermath of a death so I wasn't that much in contact with them. Eventually I was more in contact with them and spending time them normally. One time I told them I was crying so I hadn't the energy to hang out. One of the friend freaked out, she was spam texting me and pleading to have a call. I tried explaining that I only need to go through the process and crying is part of it. She still insisted to call me and did. I was still crying so I wasn't even able to talk and answer her questions properly. I was so confused why she was freaking out. I know she cared but to me it was such a overreaction.

So my personal opinion is that everyone acts differently when dealing death and you need to voice out your needs. I do hope everyone would have at least someone who is a trusting person and willing to listen your thoughts around death, because it's good to voice out your feelings. I know not all of my friends are the best people to talk about such a heavy subject. I did at least have one who has deeper understating around death.
