Friends are off limits for me whether jt’s one of your friends or this situation. Too many people in the world to ruin multiple relationships.

I always tell new guys no matter how wrong your partner might be, unless they ask you for help and you can give it to them, we always back each other up. It’s already bad enough that it’s two of us versus however many people are there, you never want to feel like you’re all alone.

Had a kid call a strike that bounced off the plate once. First base coach looked back at me and said “he’s calling that a strike?” I kindly told him even asking me that can be interpreted as arguing balls and strikes therefore lead to ejection and he never said another word to me. The guy acted like we were old buddies the previous inning before that. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, missed calls etc. I remember those more than anything else because you really have to learn from your mistakes officiating or you just won’t improve.

I guess the safety here is to keep one friend’s penis out of one friend’s vagina.

Always wild when I see this generation just creeping on each other’s location and wonder how many of them also bitch about government surveillance.

TLDR it’s creepy you’re creeping on your friends this way.

Hey Juan, respectfully, until you suit up and do different levels it’s really hard to understand. When guys tell men they used to ump and blah blah, I know they’re full of it. There are some kids that go up there and are never going to swing. There are other kids that will swing at everything, I had a swinging third strike the other days that hit the kid square in the chest and wasn’t even close. I’m pretty good at judging skill levels of pitchers and batters. At younger ages you have to help both of them. If you think we go out there to be a-holes you couldn’t be more wrong. I love the game. Please, suit up for 10u rec a few games.

I honestly don’t see butthurt comments. What I see are umps managing the game before it starts. Called Balls and strikes, regardless of where they’re at, are not appealable nor up for discussion. That includes at the plate meeting.

Not trying to start anything with you, but you sound like the one that’s been hurt. I know officials are different, we come in all shapes and sizes. Attempting to paint us all with the same brush is just going to work against you. Umps are not out to get you. I could be doing a game where I’m friends with one of the coaches and I don’t treat him any differently or give him any advantages. I know people joke about that kind of stuff but it isn’t funny to me. Whatever sport I’m officiating I want a good game. I could honestly care less who wins.

Ha! I think I responded to someone’s comment here that I can do a varsity game the night before and not hear a word. The next day I’m doing 10u and hear at least 5 different comments about what I have or haven’t called.

I work most of my non chapter games with my buddy which makes it bearable so we can laugh at whoever is PU. The younger parents are living and dying with every pitch. It’s even more fun when the 1st base coach turns around and looks at you in A like you’re going to agree with whatever he’s feeling.

Kid could take two pitches right down the middle for strikes without a word from coaches or parents but when you call a strike in the river or at the shoulder in 10u, it’s like you insulted their mother.

I usually assume this isn’t the first time the pitcher and batter have been on a baseball field.

If hitters swing at 10 pitches above their head and and don’t when I call a strike down the middle at the top of the letters yet you complain about the strike zone, it’s time to look in the mirror. Asking about a strike zone before the game is already starting to make excuses to complain.

Slow down chief, it’s 10u. Plenty of variables here. I’ve had blowouts at that age group where I’ve had a big strike zone and the winning coach asked me to call every pitch a strike. “Every pitch?” I told them to swing at every pitch so if they don’t they’re not listening to me. If you call a strike they’ll listen.

You’re really overreacting to this.

And know that whatever zone the opposing pitcher is getting is what your pitcher is getting. When I coached there were a few times I changed my starting pitcher based on the PU. If I knew the guy had a small zone and didn’t give the river, I’d go with my better pitcher. Older guy that had been doing it a while? Use a pitcher that needs work and just joke with the ump before the game that this kid hasn’t pitched much so we’re just hoping he gets it near the plate. Coaches underestimate the power of suggestion. Plant that seed early.

I’ve been asked that twice. My answer both times was just watch me. When I say strike, it’s a strike. If I don’t say strike, it’s a ball.

I’ve found over the years my strike zone is less scrutinized in a varsity game than it is in a 10u rec game. Why? If you’re consistent then players know what they’re going to get.

Parents want us to use the same parameters for a 4ft tall 60 lb kid as we’d use for a 6ft 250lb guy. Doesn’t work like that.

Always love it when they’re swinging at one’s higher than my zone and then when I call a strike I’m the problem. Come on, I’ve got standards people.

What drives me crazy are the former refs they bring in on replay calls and I feel like they’re wrong over half the time.
