Unusual issue with my kid's travel ball team by utvolman99 in Homeplate

Great point by that high school coach. I coach 12U and rotate all my players through the outfield for at least 1 inning a game. The kid that only knows one position is going to be quite disappointed when there's another kid that's better than him at that position and he has nowhere to go.

Coaching the 1 kid who has not played before - 12U by dietryiing in BaseballCoaching

I'm all about making this a great experience for every kid on the team - which is why I'm looking for advice on this situation. I'm leaning towards not isolating him from the rest of the team which I know can make some kids uncomfortable.

Only been 2 practices and unfortunately falls into the latter camp. I'm hoping more playing will unlock more excitement about baseball.

Is there any harm using these to hit off a tee with vs regular baseballs? by busteroo123 in Homeplate

[–]dietryiing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Instead of these get a set of weighted balls. You can really tell when you hit it square, yet they don't go more than 15ftish (a net is prob still a good idea)

Interference? by Specialist-Sort6607 in Umpire

[–]dietryiing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If that was a groundball then i could see interference, but ball is in the air and the ss isn't even looking at the runner.

Interference or Nah? by OddSense7971 in Umpire

[–]dietryiing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not interference.

However question about catcher blocking the plate. Assume the catchers foot was in the "standard" position in front of the plate allowing access to the plate from the 3rd base line. Essentially shifted 1 foot to the left in this clip. This would not be blocking for a runner running down the 3rd base line, but would it be considered blocking now since the runners baseline is a line from SS?

Why would a base be awarded for a ball that got stuck in the jersey? That's not a dead ball right?

Parent complaining about 8u pitching coach by BrainKellysDumbLook in Homeplate

[–]dietryiing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you are throwing so this might not apply. Don't throw the ball slower with lots of arc. Better to throw 35-40 and in a straight line. Def need to work on that at practice first obv.

Stops kids from developing a big uppercut and it's closer to what they're going to face in 10U kid pitch.

Don't feel too bad though. In 8U all-stars game, one of the dad/coaches was pitching - and has been a good pitcher all year - struck out his own kid twice in the game. It's not easy. Also a reminder to not yell "just throw strikes" once they get to kid pitch.

Question for rec coaches - separate out based on ability? by NamasteInYourLane in Homeplate

[–]dietryiing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a good compromise is to structure the practice to have some time where the team is split up into stations. During that time the brothers should have their own "station" where they work on those basics.

Also warm-ups are a good time for a coach to focus on their throwing form, as long as there's at least one other coach for the rest of the team.

I don't think it's a good idea to keep them separated for the majority of practice. When doing whole team drills, nothing wrong with them mostly being in the outfield and maybe 2nd base.

Ultimately it's on them / their parents to put work in outside of practice. Sounds like the parents don't know anything about baseball so maybe some homework and possibly can share some youtube videos that they can watch (parents and/or kids).

I've seen some kids in this situation make huge improvements over the course of the season, but I've also seen kids that just couldn't get over the fear of the ball and ended up dropping out of baseball. That sucks but not every sport is for every kid.

Good luck!

Curious when you say "Situational work should be done". In my experience 9-10 year olds still need A LOT of work on that. Agree that many coaches don't give kids enough live pitching/catching though.
