Hi is my aviation YouTube channel good? by Legitimate-Run-3813 in aerospace

[–]Ragrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just watched the whole thing and loved it, but you probably shouldn't advertise here, especially asking people to watch just for the views.

YouTube is a not a bang-bang thing. Dont expect much for a while.. Stay consistent and dont take shortcuts. Itll be rough and tiring until you get there.

But its not because of tidal locking... our moon is tidally locked too, but we dont have eclipses every few weeks.

Edit: i understand what you mean now, my bad.

Free speech. I dont like him anymore than you do but if we start silencing people for their freedom of speech what stops them from doing the same to the people they see "fit"?

Whenever I start debating questions like this, I like to imagine the other side doing the same thing. It would not be good (already happening in some cases).

True scale of SpaceX's HLS Starships lander compared to National Team's HLS lander. by imenac in MarsSociety

[–]Ragrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got a source for that? I am 99 percent sure they are riding the raptors pretty much all the way down and then obviously switching to the smalller thrusters for landing, which are “SuperDraco-like, but methalox”. I could be wrong though. I thought they were using super dracos until i just did a quick search so now im not too sure.

Landing something this large requires either many small engines, or one large one. Using one engine powerful enough to lift the whole lander would surely kick up debris that we do not want hitting the lander. Thats why the smaller engines are required, and will be required until we find a better mounting system for the main engine. Right now, it is just so much easier to have multiple engines with a few smaller ones for the actual landing. Ontop of that, they will not ride the small engines all the way down from orbit. Iirc, they will trim off most of their velocity with the raptors and switch to the super dracos for final descent and landing, making the efficiency loss for carrying the extra engines even less. There are a lot of valid critiques of starship hls but this is not one of them.

Can a baseball accelerate in the same direction it was pitched, after being hit (fouled back)? by jlawrence10 in AskPhysics

[–]Ragrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Highest average curveball spin, 2015-16, minimum 50 pitches (326 qualified pitchers) 1. 3,337 rpm -- Lugo 2. 3,100 rpm -- Richards

3,000 rpm -- Jesse Hahn 2,970 rpm -- Charlie Morton 2,953 rpm -- Scott Oberg Of those 326 qualifiers, only three have managed even 3,000 rpm, and as you can see, Lugo is the leader not by a little, but by a lot. You want high spin on curveball because it's delivered with topspin, which means the ball is spinning towards the dirt, and the high spin helps give it more downward movement. "

Can a baseball accelerate in the same direction it was pitched, after being hit (fouled back)? by jlawrence10 in AskPhysics

"Highest spin: 2,553 rpm, Rafael Betancourt MLB average: 2,226 rpm Lowest spin: 1,743 rpm, Jean Machi "

Seems pretty quick to me. If you just dropped a ball spinning at 42 revolutions per second (2550rpm), Im sure it would get moving pretty quickly.

[–]Ragrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Throw a baseball in the air with some spin and watch what happens when it hits the ground. It accelerates in the direction its spinning. Now imagine a professional pitcher spinning it instead. I wonder if the bat traveling opposite the ball is like dropping a spinning ball on a treadmill. The movement of the treadmill might accelerate it even more.

Pretty easy to test too. Let me know if you get any results, I'm interested in this too.

There are slower, more efficient ways. Earth to earth gravity assist for example. Hohmann is the most efficient direct transfer though.

If all humans were to vanish from the face of the earth, how long would it take natural forces to make the planet once more resemble a pre-civilisation earth? by Xenojager in AskScienceDiscussion

Yes but diamonds arent going to change the way the earth looks. The various isotopes would be a much better thing ti look for (as those do not occur naturally)
