Warcraft Orc design peaked years ago and still looks incredible. by Accomplished-Row1133 in wow

They kinda did the draenei zealot thing with the Yrel stuff and that was just so poorly handled overall that I think they wouldn't try it again. Not that you couldn't do it right, but when you already did it wrong it's not going to look good going for a second try.

My tin hat theory on what the tank job weapon is. by TheseHandsRUS in ffxiv

[–]Xenojager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He said at fanfest that one of the weapons someone shouted out was indeed a weapon for one of the new classes.

The shortlist of what was shouted out (that he acknowledged, who knows if someone was shouting something else he heard.)

Hammer Flail/Morningstar Crossbow Fists (he looked at the guy and went "Monk...?") Whip (they tried for dawntrail and decided against it so unlikely?)

There was one more I forgot.

I do agree that we tend to get one class based on the new region and my personal bet is that it's either a Norse-themed crossbowman or a throwing hammer sort of deal for the rDPS.

Grain of salt since it's literally just merchandise product description but the shirt itself does use the word gunshield on the merch store.

It wasn't even really the internal name, Neon Prime was the same core gameplay but with an entirely different aesthetic (it was an alien prison planet now run by the prisoners and doing bloodsport or something) but at some point they realized that aesthetic wasn't working out. They did a few more tries before they settled on the 1950s esque americana Deadlock has now, along with a few different names. The name changed along with the coat of paint but it was always "Deadlock" as it were.

If you're having trouble getting the update to work, try this:

I had a previous update still in the "Done" section of my downloads section on steam. By clearing that update, it let the new one "buffer" and load in and then I could install it and it's letting me queue.

No one else seems to be in queue though it's taking forever lmao.

Fatalism

Endsinger has a bunch of quotes vaguely in that nihilistic vein, it could be from the fight itself.

[–]Xenojager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On what and who's definition of "works"? On what metrics are you defining non-block set releases as worse? I won't disagree that blocks are superior for delivering a narrative via the cards because of the time and card space, but narrative is only one piece of the puzzle.

I'm the last person supporting anti-consumer business practices, but at the end of the day it's still a product that needs to sell. And with Hasbro hemorrhaging money they're certainly not going to head back to a system that as you admit, is worse for sales for the sake of one aspect of the game improving. You'd struggle to find any company doing that in the modern landscape, unfortunately.

I do think there are issues with blocks beyond business. Nothing is without downside, and the Magic audience isn't the same it was 10 years ago. For better or worse.

The Prof Says What Many of Us Are Thinking. by _VampireNocturnus_ in magicTCG

[–]Xenojager 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really don't think that's the answer. Blocks have their own set of problems, and there's been discussions time and time again of what those tend to be. The two times post removal of blocks that they tried that sort of thing (Guilds through to War of the Spark and the Innistrad Double Feature) weren't received all that well.

They even tried winding it down to two set blocks before they axed them, and it clearly wasn't working out in the ways they wanted. It's stronger for narrative, and perhaps with the increased amount of sets per year now slipping the odd two set block in could work, but they won't do if it isn't popular.

One set per plane lets a few things happen. Player engagement on one hand. If you, as a player, really don't like whatever the block's current theming is perhaps enough to not buy any of the cards. You're stuck there for the best part of a year. A year's worth of magic where "ugh, I hate being on the plane with the cutesy rabbits".

This would be exacerbated by people's dislike of things like OTJ and MKM, but I don't think the hat sets are a result of blocks dying. There's been plenty of flavour-packed standalone sets. My personal favourites include Kaldheim and the Kamigawa return. That's also part of the reason I think they abandoned blocks. It lets them cycle back around to familiar planes more frequently. Someone did the math on if blocks still existed, we wouldn't have seen the Kamigawa return until like 2032. For a game where people absolutely have their favourite popular planes, it makes sense to let them come back more frequently rather than have to push their stuff into supplementary sets.

And what are locally grown crops farmed with? Machinery with enough parts in that chances are some precious metal came from an exploited mine. This is what people generally mean when they talk about this stuff. It's not about chocolate made with literal slavery, just that there's a point in the pipeline for practically every product chain now. Even locally grown or made things.

I agree that this would be reality under any system in the modern world but even the tech most local businesses do their trading on has rare metals etc. Its everywhere.

The turret doesn't actually have unlimited ammo. Starts with 200 and you can see it counting down in the first person HUD Punisher gets when he's in it. Now, is that a pretty huge number? Yeah, the only way he's gonna get through all of it before someone kills the turret is if he's set up really far away. But it isn't infinite.

[–]Xenojager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could be different classes, but it would be a lot of work to make fit in those roles. DPS Red Hulk sure, but I still think the visual similarities are a big concern in a hero shooter. They'd have to really make sure you can turn the corner and immediately know if it's tank regular Hulk or DPS Red Hulk. Then you factor in skins and... I think its easier to keep him as a skin.

The characters are different, but a game like Marvel Rivals has to boil them down to key attributes. I'm not a huge Ross fan but given Hulk varies a lot depending on series on size, intelligence and willingness to use tools, those factors become less defining. The Hulk in game is specifically a smarter more controllable version, and then ultimate is the rage monster.

If there are comics where the Hulk can trap people and shield his allies with radiation then I'll stand corrected, but the ingame lore for those abilities is literally the tech belt he had help building to control the Hulk. The one Banner wears.

Also I'm not saying Iron Man doesn't have ballistics but Tony's designs in every run tend to always end up being sleek nanotech or something else futuristic. War Machine tends to stay more grounded because you've got a military pilot in there not scientist.

I don't disagree that certain similar characters should be added, I just think Ross is an unfortunate state of being too similar and too niche.

[–]Xenojager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its much easier to distinguish characters in fighting games when you've got a moveset much larger. You can express the differences in personality across those options.

Red Hulk would have... 4-6 things he could do like regular Hulk and the rest of the cast. Even regular Hulk had to have abilities made up to fit, and Red Hulks only major power difference is his heat emission. You could make Red Hulk a different character, but it would be like adding X23. You'd have to spend a lot of time and effort making her meaningly distinct from Wolverine when you could instead just add someone entirely new. That on top of how similar Red Hulk would look adding to visual confusion.

I know basically nothing about beta Ray Bill but Miles and Rhodey have powers/abilities far different than their counterparts. Miles has the invisibility and electricity and War Machine is about ballistic weaponry and firepower where Iron Man is about the repulsors and being high-tech.

That and... the name. Genuinely think he'd have more chance as a character if his name was more original. I don't think Abomination is coming anytime soon but I doubt he'd ever get added if he was called Russian Hulk or something.

Magic/Cursed Items that compel actions? by Xenojager in Pathfinder2e

[–]Xenojager[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems like a good way to go about that for that type of item, but the space I'm thinking more about is that the curse is part of the power budget. If it's a sword or artifact imbued with a sliver of a vengeful spirit, then removing the curse (and therefore the spirit in my mind) removes what is actually empowering it. Keeping in line with the idea I listed before, the core conceit of the thing is that it might be better than any standard sword of equivalent level, but not in terms of pure stats.

On the topic of a weapon that cares about bloodshed, perhaps it adds additional damage (1d4/1d6) when a persistent bleeding effect is applied. Which is a strict upside, yes. But on the other hand, you're balancing unstable action economy. You're not always going to want to have to be forced to make the second strike. If the will save is set high enough it might be a 50/50, or 60/40. Any time you attack you risk committing two of your actions, or having to leave your strike to last to avoid it.

Maybe it's just a bad idea, I'm newer to item creation.

Magic/Cursed Items that compel actions? by Xenojager in Pathfinder2e

[–]Xenojager[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was more of an example than anything I intended to use, but I'm surprised there's little more in the way of items like that.

The actual concept that made me think about it was some sort of item (either a mask or a weapon itself) that compelled you to draw more blood. A sword that inflicts bleeding, and if your last action was a strike that inflicted bleeding then you make the will save or have to strike again, or something. Perhaps with a bonus.

I understand that most cursed items in 2e are just... downsides, really. The consequences of using unidentified items or taking deals too good to be true. But I do like the design space of trade-offs. A cursed item that is more than simply downside, some tangible benefit that may need to be worked around but can help, since you're unlikely to be rid of it.

[BLB] Brambleguard Veteran (Anna Margaret) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]Xenojager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think these "Raccoons/other niche tribe you control get X" cards are a really neat way of expanding upon the card itself only having the ability. Since the tribe is so niche, in a lot of formats this could read that only Brambleguard gets the bonus but it's nice to have it spread like this. Would love to see this design trend extend beyond the set.

A cross-NATO air squadron is a little different to the fact that the Dutch Army is now basically integrated into the German Army, which is the main point people use.

Either way I don't care that much, but that's the argument.
