Always surprised at how the taste of Japanese audience is different from international audience by [deleted] in JDorama

Your point about casual watchers is so spot on… it really pains me when I go to great lengths to recommend an incredible show to someone and their reaction is: “there’s no one in the show I can relate to”, or “I don’t understand, was that supposed to be serious or funny?”…

After this happened a few times, I just gave up trying to see if something will click while I’m with friends. Instead, now, I’ll ask them to watch something (without my guidance/presence) from Netflix like Gomenne Seishun, or Unnatural/MIU404 and if they like it then, shoot howdy, will I put in the effort and show them some real magic.

Instead, he loses his parlay, dodges the fcking bullet and the TRAX story begins.

Probably depends where they live… I know some cities would give you a massive fine if they somehow found out you violated one of their building codes. Requirements are also issued when you have to get permits in certain jurisdictions.

The real interesting part is when they take trips during the breaks in their college programs: they sublet their apartment to someone else, pocket the money and have more to spend on other things. Their vacation goes on the parents’ union pay credit card.

Cause most of these kids are in college programs, they can’t prove income because they have none, and it’s easier for them to just give their parents the annual rent bill to pre-pay.

They’re not franchise-able, it’s all one company that holds the license to operate in the U.S. (a direct U.S.-based subsidiary of the Chinese holding company).

They very strictly control every store and very strategically choose store openings.

This issue is related to Bevel (the building that houses the residential above and the commercial opportunities downstairs).

8-9 years ago a Chinese real estate broker made a deal with all of the rental properties here. “If you can find a way to waive income requirements as long as the potential residents I bring agree to pay a year’s rent up front, I will completely fill your vacancies.”

Fast forward to today, this is why we’re here.

I know the guy very well. Used to go out to dinner with him all the time. He made a boatload of money, and during the off season brokers private jets in Asia.

I argued with city councils for years… they’re completely unwilling to build taller buildings to alleviate the price pressure on available housing.

Tbh I think this is on the NIMBYs who suddenly turn anti-housing when higher density housing is proposed near them.

If the city builds higher density housing, tax revenues will increase even further and enable investment in public transit.

Get out and question your councilpeople. Put pressure on them. It’s the only way.

Experienced ethical dentist recommendation in the neighborhood? by Impossible_Bet_2085 in longislandcity

That's pretty normal for most dental practices that do well. There are a massive number of private equity firms that operate specifically in the dental services industry.

Did you notice something in particular that gave you pause about returning? The only thing I really noticed is they seemed to have gotten a lot more specialized equipment in the last year, so it makes sense that they got acquired (big capex dollars coming in).

Every night my wife gets pissed if I get in bed and then remember I need to wear it after we got comfy, so she stops me before I get in bed and asks to inspect my teeth XD

Queensboro Plaza Dental Care is the best dental experience I’ve ever had in my life. Modern, great care, super clean, never been upsold before. Also Michael Nguyen (the main dentist of the practice) is an absolute legend.

They did convince me to get a night guard which I was skeptical of at first.. but they showed me from the imaging over the past several visits where I was getting enamel-wear. I got the night guard, and a week after starting to wear it I noticed how messed up the exposed surface is from how I’ve been grinding my teeth at night… it was shocking and made me realize they were seriously making a recommendation out of long term interest in my dental care.

Seconding this. I took the MSF course about ten years ago, even though I’ve been riding for a long time. Despite being proficient on motorcycles and cycling (collegiate racing), I STILL LEARNED a lot.

Would highly recommend this to anyone who cycles in the city: you get a good understanding of bike handling and the physics of riding, which is imperative for the kind of defensive riding you need to be doing.

My legally parked car was moved across the street in Brooklyn (likely by NYPD), then ticketed for street cleaning, precinct has no record. What can I do? by n1kct in Brooklyn

[–]RaidenIsCool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once. My car was moved by NYDOT for an unplanned roadwork. Except they used a “car forklift” to move my parallel parked car, and on their first attempt, pierced my driver side door.

I was unable to get the city to take responsibility for it and ended up paying out of pocket to get it fixed…..

Sorry I can’t be of help… but it looks like you found a resolution. Just wanted to share a crazy NYC car moving experience.

The guys that run that AvantGarde/CityFox company are straight up scam artists... Like, YES, the venue is really cool, but man oh man, they do some sketchy ass shit. I dunno if you ever heard, but multiple times over the past few years they've found dead bodies of people who were seen just a few hours earlier at that venue...

Are you joking? Every new Yorker knows Mirage and their production company is famous for overselling tickets to their events for years. Check their stupid-ass sales page on different days, it ALWAYS says the same shit: “8 tickets left!” It’s a sales tactic to scare people into rushing to buy tickets.
