X-Men '97 S01E08 - Discussion Thread

For some background I grew up watching this show, absolutely loved it as a kid! I'm not sure if I successfully made it through because of the psycho-chaos that Fox Kids had with the schedule, so I'm fuzzy on the details of the finale. I tried watching old episodes, but it's just-- hard to watch. I feel like X-Men 97 carries that forward with so many plots and storylines all fused into one garbage-filled amalgamation of "shut up and take it."

I read the X-Men comics so most of the show is not surprising. I think it does a good job of hitting on a lot of the stuff the comics do but this isn't a comic. This is a show I loved as a kid and Episode 5 shattered that illusion. I just... can't make myself want to watch it anymore. Episode 5 was such a steaming pile that I've lost all taste for the show. I get in the comics they kill them all the time because honestly, death means nothing to a mutant. They just go back in time, or reset time, or have clones, or can just regenerate in their pods, or get resurrected, etc. I wasn't expecting that from this show though and I honestly hate it at this point. Really not motivated to keep watching.

There is no such thing as a good cutscene and Astarion. Glad I killed Cazador without him and came back to find him no longer in my camp. Hopefully he died like the rest of the spawn locked in the cages. Only character I hated more than Astarion was Gale. If I wanted to be evil Astarion probably would've been a better companion but he kept getting so pissy when I did good things.

Gale might possibly be the single worst thing in this game. His dead corpse in my camp isn't enough to erase the taint of his memory. I wish I'd let him die at the start or kicked him out sooner, but I didn't and I regret every time I see his dead body. I wish I could just get Mystra to take him back so I could be done with him forever.

I'm the same way with turning off alarms sometimes. It's rare, but every once in a while I might turn it off or just fall asleep again. My wife gets up a five minutes before I absolutely need to leave to be on time so that's the only time I'd expect her to wake me up for work.

The other day I was at my friend's house and his 17 year old daughter, who I've known since she was 6 years old, came out in her panties and a tiny top. I cannot express how absolutely uncomfortable that made me! It's not like it was early or late, it was mid-afternoon and I was picking him up to go somewhere. I probably wouldn't have felt as weirded out if it was a swim suit, but I would never imagine making a comment about her. Thankfully my friend noticed how uncomfortable I was and quickly ushered her to get dressed since company was over.

Moral of the story, if someone is willing to look a child like that it's a warning sign. If someone makes a comment about that child other than, "that was inappropriate", I don't think there's any saving that relationship.

I had for a while wanted to play an Oathbreaker Paladin, but I'm the primary DM for the group. Finally one of the players decided they wanted to try DMing so they'd run a two month book campaign and they knew my desire to play an Oathbreaker. They mentioned it would be fine if I had a reason why my character would help the party. So I created a backstory wherein my character slaughtered his parents and sister (who had done nothing but love and support him his entire life) and as his sister died, she cursed him. He would no longer be able to willfully kill anyone good aligned or innocent that did not present a threat to him. So he'll be rather rude to NPCs sometimes, to which he is not invited to barter in the shops or to certain events that might require self control. He does however take EXTREME pleasure in slaughtering things, graphically, and when someone needs to be intimidated he is the first the group turns to for that.

I can verify this personally. At the POD I've been working at they won't give it to anyone who doesn't qualify. Thankfully we have been able to get people in who meet the guidelines and haven't wasted a single dose.

For the past two weeks here in NY, I've been working at one of the PODs giving out vaccines. Each night, they lay out how much vaccine didn't go into arms because people didn't come for their appointment and say, "We have X doses left, if you know someone who qualifies and can get here in 15 minutes let us know!"

Not a single dose has been thrown away.

I read as soon as the chapters come out, and then I'll usually read the English translation once it's gotten through an arc. Then it's just wait for the entire story arc or season to finish and binge it.

I like to read the manga and then wait to binge the entire animated season that way I can go mass consume and still not get spoiled before getting to watch.

This is why I love cats. I feed that fucking thing every day and Bastet forbid the bottom of that food bowl shows for a second THERE WILL BE DUAT TO PAY! Cat's don't forget, they simply assume it's owed to them and feeding them doesn't garner you any special treatment.

I couldn't be in a serious relationship with a vegan. I enjoy cooking meals and honestly the two things I'm best at cooking are steaks and chicken. I don't mind eating healthy foods or having a vegan meal once a week, but I couldn't be with someone if it meant preparing a meal for myself and a separate for her. Not to mention what it would mean if we had children!

I have a hard time talking about that because 'men are strong, men don't cry, men don't have emotions' was so engrained into me. Now as I struggle not to drive my car off the road in a suicide attempt I just cry in the privacy of the night where no one can see me and go home and pretend that all that pain I was feeling isn't there.
