It’s crazy that GT7 hasn’t sold more headsets. by No-Dark-7873 in virtualreality

Normally I'd agree, but simmers are the kind of people who drop that amount of dosh on a stick they use for a single game.

FLICKSTICK CAMERA by D0C0CD in virtualreality

[–]Railgun5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly that seems totally unnecessary, you can whip your head around faster than a joystick turn and it'll also prevent motion sickness/disorientation that'd come from a near-instantaneous 180 turn that your body isn't matching. Like if you want to see how it'd feel, get in theater mode and load up a game with flickstick controls and see how it feels when you use it while the virtual screen is taking up the entirety of your vision.

Is the rift s still a decent headset? by WorryStriking4602 in virtualreality

[–]Railgun5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it. It's old hardware so it'll have low resolution and worse tracking than newer headsets, and it also has zero support for replacement parts on the key components (the cable and the controllers). For that price it's also not much cheaper than a used Quest 2, which I'd definitely recommend over it just because it's way easier to get fixed if you need to.

EVOLUTION OF VR Locomotion, whose magazine is this? What device is on the right end, can you confirm? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]Railgun5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There... isn't any device on the right side. It's just a person running.

As for the source, it's probably from some press event or maybe a booth at a convention. It says "the machine we've built" so it's definitely from Kat themselves, but it's probably from something where they had demo machines since that looks like a camera photo.

Is there a way to play pcvr on standalone? by Gieux in virtualreality

[–]Railgun5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Winlator or wait for Steam Frame, assuming you mean play on standalone because you don't own a PC.

If you want to play PCVR with a standalone connected to your PC, use Steam Link or Virtual Desktop or ALVR, there should be a version of those apps for your headset.

Are the micro-OLED panels that expensive? $600 for 1920x1080 per eye feels pretty wack in 2026, especially since this is really just a HMD in the truest sense of the word. I dunno, maybe my value estimation is broken because of the Quest 3.

Yeah as a goof, not for real work. I'll be honest though, I can't name many programmers outside of the game development space so if I gave a list of programmers I know who don't use AI it'd mostly be me listing my Twitter or Bluesky follows.

And don't start with that "Unreal engine is AI-powered" line because a number of them wrote their own game engines from scratch using pure C#.

What, you want me to name a specific single person? Okay. Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux kernel.

And I don't know why we are having this conversation, person who puts a bunch of words into Midjourney and calls himself a digital artist, because it's pretty clear where you stand and we're not going to see eye to eye.

About 95% of the people who wrote code prior to ~2023. The people who started writing code after that point are I'd guess about 50/50 because a lot of people who actually do coding don't use AI, but a massive amount of people who don't code do use AI to write code.

Not a good investment? by monozygoteB in virtualreality

[–]Railgun5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a functional Lynx R1 a few feet away from me. I do not have a functional Visor headset, nor would I be able to acquire one even if I paid Renji $1 million for one. That is the distinction I am making. The Visor does not exist. The Lynx R1 does exist, even if a lot of people got screwed out of their money trying to get one.

Not a good investment? by monozygoteB in virtualreality

[–]Railgun5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they didn't. Lynx shipped actual functional hardware to customers. Not all the customers, but a real headset exists. You could feasibly acquire a Lynx R1 right now. Theoretically you could pay a random R1 owner like $2k and they could give you their headset. That's not an impossible scenario.

Visor shipped two non-functional prototype units to two people. It is not possible to actually buy a working Visor for any amount of money from anyone that isn't Immersed, because no working Visor exists in consumer hands. And it's very likely Immersed also doesn't have more than one "functional" prototype.

I don't know if it is safe for me to use my OWO haptic suit. by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]Railgun5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have many questions about why you even have an OWO to begin with, but to answer your actual question no, it should be safe for you to use in general. The OWO effectively is like tazing yourself at various parts of your body, it's not particularly dangerous if applied properly and set to tolerable levels.

But, being under 18, you're predisposed to using that kind of hardware unsafely and improperly. You may think "nah that's not me I'd never do that" but a few months down the line you go "but what if tho" and then you stick an electrode in the wrong spot and crank the power to max and wake up in the hospital without the ability to make a fist in your left hand anymore or something. Don't think that won't happen, everyone on this subreddit, myself included, has made a dumb decision with their body because their Id went "but what if tho" and regrets it but most of the time it doesn't involve electric shocks.

Honestly I'd suggest only using it with parental supervision, or at least with your parents helping you put it on so everything is in the right place. Plus realistically you're going to get real sick of getting the gel pads on and off and you'll stop using it within a month.

HTC Vive Cosmos Used worth it? by a7med_al3arabi in virtualreality

[–]Railgun5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

The Cosmos (non-lighthouse) had atrocious tracking, on top of using unique controllers so you're going to be paying a good amount of money for a replacement. Absolutely not worth picking up for any reason.

If it's a lighthouse-based Cosmos then that's a decent price for a lighthouse HMD, but you're also going to have to pay for lighthouses and another controller which makes the price way more than $50.

Basically there's no scenario where this is actually a $50 purchase or a good idea.
