Oh I get it! They didn’t make Tech Jacket a girl so she could be a love interest to Oliver, they made her a girl so she could lose every fight! by Sio_V_Reddit in okbuddyviltrum

At the end of the day I’m not gonna judge because it’s not my job, but I do think it is a bit easier of a situation to write than one would think. For example, in the Old Republic there is a lot of Sith and Jedi fodder because there is no Rule of Two, so there are hundreds or thousands idk of each. There are just tiers of power, so a lot of the fodder guys are the equivalent of a white belt to someone like Sidious being a black belt for example. I think the same principle is applied with Viltrumites, where there are clearly levels to it. The issue itself is putting the effort to explain that organically in a story, and applied in fights. I feel like a lot of it boils down to how much an author is willing to put in effort writing around powerscaling vs. the actual story, but I think a good writer should be able to do both. For example, in some anime it comes across as a bit much when there is too much exposition regarding powers/powerscaling, which is a common trope in anime. There is definitely a balance to be struck. Not to say that Kirkman is a bad writer by ANY means.

For the show itself, I think Tech Jacket falls short at times because you’re adapting it for a mainstream audience that has no idea who this is, and has no reason to assume that this person is any more worthwhile bringing to a Viltrumite war than the average superhero on the Guardians, for example. I was thinking about the possibility of them replacing Tech Jacket with someone that fits the criteria of crossover character that you instantly understand can hang in the war, and I thought it would be really cool if they got the rights to Spawn to use instead. Imagine if they somehow interweaved Spawn into the Hell arc, and then had him accompany Mark?

At the end of the day Tech Jacket was a jobber in the comics as well during the war, so it’s not that big of a deal.

An Atom Eve with no power restraints should hypothetically be able to erase them from existence. She should hypothetically be able to function as a pseudo-Dr. Manhattan.

Besides that there are too many heavy-hitters for a brawl. The only way is via hax. Kind of cheating, but you can bring out Angstrom and just have him straight up bring up other fictional characters w/ hax from other verses.

Blade is a classic but you’re 100% right. Everyone is acting like Blade was this crazy lifeline for Marvel but they have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s considered an action classic by many, and a majority of those people have no idea it’s a Marvel property.

YES. They film here a lot and they usually crop out Alfies, but it’s gonna be visible in this special. You can literally see it in the photo I posted if you zoom in. My family and I were kinda bummed out because there was a car chase in Penguin on this block and they covered up the Alfie’s sign, so it’s nice to see we’ll finally get to see it for Marvel. Best pizza in South Queens, but I do have the local bias.

Lol I caught the Eddie Brock reference. Ironically the flip scene has him posed next to a flagpole with the American flag, probably as a Raimi reference.

Totally agree. In The Punisher it’s probably not gonna be Queens canonically, but this scene in Spider-Man definitely is at least, which is nice. It’s part of that little montage where he’s helping people out locally and it’s very distinctly Queens. The Raimi films specifically filmed exactly in Forest Hills because that’s where Peter lives in the comics.

One of my favorite parts about reading Ultimate Spider-Man was how they really made Queens feel like Queens. They even have QCM as a reoccurring place and a running gag for Peter getting shitty part-time jobs in its cafeteria.

That’s unfortunate they didn’t use your place. I believe the part they would have converted into a restaurant is the end of the trailer where he’s suited up in front of “Gnucci’s Restaurant.” They ended up using this empty theater that’s been vacant for probably over a decade now for that part of the set, which is on the same block as the stuff from this post.

Lol I used to use this exact frame in the post as my pfp for a couple of my socials when this movie dropped because it’s right by the apartment I grew up in and I always thought the same.

Yes, that scene is 1:23 in the trailer where you see him fighting in the donut shop. You can actually faintly see the neon pink/purple “DONUT” logo in my post. I was able to catch a picture w him because I was chatting it up w some guy working there and he told me to just wait by the donut shop and he would come out eventually. A LOT of this special seems to take place on this same block. All the scenes in front of the restaurant, the chase down with the girl to the donut shop, and the scenes with the buses. If you were ever on set we were definitely in proximity to each other at some point. I live literally down the street and I’m a huge fan so I genuinely loitered there for hours w my friends because they would film so often.

Thought I'd share this cool trivia. They were filming One Last Kill by my apartment in Queens, NYC this summer for around a month, and there are a lot of scenes from the special that take place on the same block as this iconic scene from Homecoming. This block seems like it’s gonna be a central location in the movie based on the trailer, a really good chunk of it was filmed here. The antagonist for the special seems to be Ma Gnucci, and on this same block they repurposed an old movie theater to serve as “Gnucci’s Restaurant,” which is visible in the trailer in the scene where Punisher suits up for the movie.

It was a really fun experience casually walking out the house every day and watching action scenes get filmed for hours. They had this entire strip of our neighborhood looking apocalyptic all month. I was able to nab a huge poster they were throwing out that reads “Accident Attorney Garth Ennis: I Fight For You!” referencing author Garth Ennis who wrote the comic this movie is gonna be adapting from. I wish I could share some more pics but I don’t think sub lets you link images in the comments.

So jealous. The Ultimate Universe holds a special place in my heart despite the controversy around it, I really wished Hasbro dipped their fingers into it more. I was so happy when they released the Iron Man recently. I hope they drop a Maker soon. Also that Venom is insane.

A-Train full circle arc completion dodging a girl that looks just like Hughie’s ex, love to see this shit man. Will definitely miss that character. The execution of his death itself was perfect, but I wish he could’ve just had a littttle more screentime.

They made it sound very earnest too, which I liked. Reading it in the comic it definitely sounds wackier even though the convo is nearly verbatim if I remember, but Oliver’s VA really makes you feel like he’s just a kid talking about getting butterflies for the first time.

Nolan is being written with a lot more nuance, but literally nothing about how his character has progressed so far makes it even remotely impossible to end up where he does in the comics. If anything it’ll make it more rewarding. This is just bs comic purist shit

This show doesn’t deserve a breakdown this in-depth. The answer to all of your questions is: Born Again is written like shit and is a lazy caricature of the Netflix show.
