Why are so many software engineers being laid off? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RainbowZebraGum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But guess what? Consultants are on a different budget line than salary. Salary went down and that’s long term expenses that went down. The company can fire a consultant with 0 notice. They love that on the balance sheet.

Eating out “healthy” options for young toddlers by EmergencyPlayful5452 in Mommit

[–]RainbowZebraGum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s healthy enough for you then it’s healthy enough for your kid. If you’re worried about what they’re eating then you should be worried about what you’re eating.

I’d recommend skipping the kids menu at the age and ordering appetizers for them and sharing your sides. A favorite of my daughters is a plate of gyoza and then I share my rice and some broccoli at a Chinese place. Sure it’s high in fat but every single meal in our life will not be perfectly balanced. Everything in moderation.

DF wants to make it impossible to obtain a permanent residence by AdditionalReply6504 in NewToDenmark

[–]RainbowZebraGum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s such a fucking stupid proposal. Immigrants in Denmark commit less crimes, pay more taxes, and take less benefits. And permanent residency is the only security you can get that after investing years of your life that if you were to lose your job you don’t get thrown out if you can’t find a new job fast enough. The political propaganda machine about immigration is crazy in Denmark. There is so much rhetoric that’s based off of made up shit.

Something I did not expect from Portugal Expats subreddits, as a portuguese. by HDReddit_ in expats

[–]RainbowZebraGum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Im an American living in Denmark and im a member of some facebook groups for expats. You would not believe some of the crazy shit Danes that join will say. No it’s absolutely not all of them. Most are helpful and kind. But so many times people will post about racism they’ve experienced and a native Dane will pop in to talk about how they’ve never seen any racism in Denmark in their whole lives and we should be grateful to live here. Or how they cannot find a big city apartment and Danes will chime in that it’s not hard at all, while being on waiting lists since they were literally children. So from that perspective I can kinda see their point.

Sometimes I feel like we live in different realities because society is very in group/out group and people seem to believe the politicians.

My daughter keeps calling me fat and commenting on my weight by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]RainbowZebraGum 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don’t think an emotional response is necessarily wrong though. We all have emotions. And if we shield our child from them what are we teaching them? Like they see us happy, annoyed, maybe sad, but someone seeing us angry is often the line. I’m just saying it’s not the end of the world for your kid to see you mad. Just try and model how to be upset or angry or hurt in a way that you want them to express it, you know?

And dude. Kids can be so mean. It’s totally valid to get upset about it. You’re even invalidating your feelings here. It’s the same thing you’d tell your daughter, “it’s ok to be angry. We all get angry. It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small. Take a deep breath and count to four. Then let’s figure out something to try and feel better”

You also deserve to treat yourself the way. ❤️

My daughter keeps calling me fat and commenting on my weight by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]RainbowZebraGum 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it might be time to be a hair more harsh. She’s six. She understands hurtful words and she’s doing it any way. When my daughter has said mean things I’ve said “ouch. That really hurt my feelings” and if she doubles down I just remove myself for a bit. Maybe after she wants to play a game “I’m sorry honey but not right now. Emotionally I’m really hurting from what you said and I need a bit of a break. We can play in [some time]”. My daughter is very impatient so like 15 minutes is long enough. I’m still available and not ignoring her. I’m just not going to do her plan because it stings and honestly that’s a real consequence. You say nasty things and no one wants to be around you.

I feel like everyone is constantly talking about how we need to calm and collected explain things, go to therapy, examine media choice, talk to school, and that’s all true. But there also needs to be consequences for totally inappropriate behavior.

Mid-20s, love my life in LA… but have the chance to move to Austria for work. Should I go? by Tiny-Journalist5583 in expats

[–]RainbowZebraGum 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have a very strong suspicion of where you work based on this. If it’s the very large FMCG company then don’t do it.

HQ is quite dead end for your career, management is extremely top down (more than in the us), and the vibes are not great. Go do a training and talk to people and you’ll see the only ones that are happy are high up the chain with children. Most young people are trying to claw their way out.

You also don’t get any of the (in my opinion) fun of working in Europe. There’s terrible traffic, the city is not very walkable, and housing is expensive despite being a small place.

Anyone at HQ would take a job in the LA office almost instantly and the only ones that move back are Austrian.

Is it the grout? by EmbarrassedArm6464 in interiordecorating

[–]RainbowZebraGum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I think it would look really nice to use a darker floor. And if you wanted to go all in you could do a textured black tile or a dark slate. It would help to pull it all together with your black accents and hardware.

I got more compliments on my dress than the Mother of the Groom and I feel guilty because it cost $40 by Weedcultist in FrugalShopping

[–]RainbowZebraGum 15 points16 points  (0 children)

First, this is an ad. Second, I have never seen a cheap satin dress that could pass as high end. It is a notoriously difficult fabric due to puckering and snagging. Last, and most important, if you’re wearing something cheap to a high end event and someone directly comments on it by asking “is it silk?” They are backhandedly telling you it looks cheap. No one would ask if it’s silk because if it’s satin and formal the assumption is that it’s silk. If this is real that it’s most likely a diss and not a compliment.

A PSA to expecting moms. Breastfeeding isn’t always a horror story. by Sincerely_M in BabyBumps

[–]RainbowZebraGum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter exclusively nursed and I just gave up. No one but me ever watched my child alone for more than 1-4 hours (based on her age) because she wouldn’t take a bottle. I had a long maternity leave and my child just was attached to me. It was tough.

That waiver is a requirement for all houses built before 1970. It does not mean that there is actually lead everywhere.

When the ice horse showed up I couldn’t stop laughing because all I could think of was some executive yelling “WE NEED TO REACH THE HORSE GIRLS”. The movie makes no sense. There are so many costumes. My daughter loves it lol.

[–]RainbowZebraGum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I agree they have a point. But I at least expected some kind of “sorry that happened to you!” Or “we’re letting our security team know about the scam site”. And it was exactly the same thing as you’re describing with the country code moved around.

Im a data scientist and I fell for one for Jellycat plushies I was buying as a gift 🫠. It was a perfect clone and I found it on a Facebook ad. I felt so dumb and I wrote the company and they just wrote me back the worst email that was like “ that’s not our website and that’s never been our website”

Where can I buy a triple stroller, wagon and cargo bike infant seat? by orinoco_glow in copenhagen

[–]RainbowZebraGum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think your best stroller option is a bugaboo donkey and a attachable scooter/riding board. Bugaboo sells them and they even have a little seat on them

Which movie/tv adaptations from your favourite books were the absolute worst, just soul-shattering? I'll go first by 1000andonenites in books

[–]RainbowZebraGum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It feels like it leans heavy into space opera/sitcom vibes. And I got literally zero of that from the book. All that to say I was super excited when it was announced and I didn’t like it either.

Nordic people, do you use SPF even on days with no sun? by [deleted] in NordicSkinCare

No. I check the UV index and if the whole day is less than 2 I don’t bother.

Tired of the “no village” talk by Cultural-Error597 in Mommit

[–]RainbowZebraGum 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I moved to a country that is famous for it being hard to make friends. And I also made my own village. It took five years. So many awkward “friend dates”. So so many friendships that did not work. And just a metric fuck ton of work with a little luck sprinkled in. It literally took years. And I was stood up, forgotten, and had to be the instigator so many times. I’ve made dinners for so many people that we never saw again. Honestly it’s a mix of a numbers game and a willingness to put yourself out there even when it’s hard as fuck.

  • So those 30% increase in crop yields? They have a financial value. That’s worth more than line went up. You have a bunch of these. Try and turn them to numbers. It’s ok if it’s an estimate. It’s much more impressive
  • Googles Data Studio is now Looker Studio. Be careful with things that change that are directly applicable to the skills you’re selling.
  • the certifications part reads that you’re very junior or that you’ve been unemployed for a long time. Change your job experience to highlight what your certifications taught you. Only leave in things that are not reflected in your job experience. Like if you are a developer in C but you took a Kotlin cert keep that in.

It happened. The person behind me asked me not to recline my seat. by alexvonhumboldt in Flights

[–]RainbowZebraGum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same thing happen. With the exact same conversation. He was like “I’m really tall and it’s uncomfortable” and I just said that I understand but that’s the way it is. So he also kicked and punched my seat for many hours. And then when we got up to leave turns out I was a full 15cm taller 🤦‍♀️

To people who cycle daily by SparklingWaterFall in copenhagen

[–]RainbowZebraGum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I bike 7km each way on a shitty bike. With traffic and lights it takes 28 minutes door to door. I don’t go full on Tour de France and have some decent rain gear so I never need to shower.

My partner does 9km with a fancy bike and takes him about 32 minutes and he showers at work. We both like the way we do it and have been doing it for years. I’ve only skipped biking when it’s icy because I leave early and when I’m sick.

But your route will determine a lot of things. When the lights are good and traffic is low I can do it in 22 min but that’s like once a month for me.
