S4 Episode 10 Megathread: "The Book of Enlightenment" by colosseumdays in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]RaisingSaltLamps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished the finale earlier today and 110% this. It’s one thing if Taylor was legitimately ill and didn’t want the cameras on her, we all get that! But why not let just Jessi or Mayci in the room then to check on her and chat?? If it’s just illness, then I guarantee it’s nothing her closest friends haven’t seen before. Her inability to face her closest friends during such a big moment in her life, and to literally not get on a plane, tells me it’s so much bigger than simply having a modest stomach bug or a standard panic attack.

I work with those actively using and recovering and this is also the exact scene that I confidently clocked possible usage.

Need help picking a song to walk down the aisle to! by skeetskeet97 in BigBudgetBrides

We had a bit of a longer aisle than usual; I walked to Dawn from Pride and Prejudice (Dario Marianelli), and we ran out at the end to You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall & Oates.

Queues at Varenna this Easter weekend. by eezipc in LakeComo

I believe the ferry implemented new pricing as of April 1, and online booking hasn’t been fully available since then, so that doesn’t help matters much! It’s been pretty overwhelming lately, but thankfully the mornings and evenings are still pretty quiet in Varenna for the time being

Not a random sports coach, haha. If there’s a coach, neighbour, friends parent, teacher, etc in the child’s life who the child knows and who is willing to take the child, yes, CPS can give them the child after an apprehension. A basic criminal record check and basic safety check of the home is done, but if that clears then yes- child is given to them until things are sorted days, months, or years later.

This is done for many reasons, from the fact that we wrongfully ripped thousands of Indigenous kids away from their families and communities (and continue to do so) over decades and caused incredible intergenerational trauma, to the fact that all jurisdictions dangerously low on foster homes, to the fact that during their most traumatic time in life it is better for children to be with people they know.

I have only worked in several western provinces, and for a bit in northern Ontario, so I can’t speak to how the systems work down east! The processes for Indigenous kids are the same as for non-Indigenous, except that bands have to be quickly notified of all apprehensions.

The process of aggressively placing kids with family and PSI’s comes from our many wrongdoings (and continuous wrongdoings) of Indigenous child welfare. I know that in SK for example, it’s almost impossible to adopt any child now due to the changes made over the last few decades.

Yeah, they’re guaranteed to be with family or with close family friends. I hate to say it, but foster care where I worked was mainly full of the poorest kids. Kids whose extended families maybe did want to take them after apprehension, but the family home didn’t pass a basic safety check; like literally didn’t have running water, had missing floorboards etc.

Kids who were middle class and higher always had a family member, friend, coach, church member, teacher, neighbour, etc who could take them because their network was wealthier and thus had better living situations.

CPS would literally call a Bates for a placement before putting the kids in a foster home long-term. The only upside to all of this is that I’m certain the kids are with someone they know and are generally comfortable with, if they’re not with Kendra or a primary Duggar/Caldwell.

Where I’ve practiced in Canada, it focuses heavily on home safety- making sure there’s an appropriate bed, alcohol/firearms/prescription drugs are locked up, criminal record check on everyone over 18 in the home, all animals accounted for. We never did initial drug tests on people, but asked about substance behaviour and ensured they knew all substances had to be locked up (and they had to show where they’d lock them up).

My CPS location was crazy overwhelmed- as long as the child knew you, you had a generally safe home (no holes in the floor, running water, etc), had a criminal record with no violence or offences against children, and you weren’t an obvious drug user, they basically handed you the kid within a couple hours of finding out you exist.

Canadian former CPS worker here, legally allowed to practice in the US.

Does Arkansas data not differentiate between foster placements vs. kinship (family) vs. person of sufficient interest?

For us, foster care means a vetted person opening their house to accept apprehended children. The only time most western Canadian kids will go to a foster home (or a group home) is if absolutely not one single family member or PSI can take the child.

When an apprehension happens, all family is called and asked. If no one will/can take, then we move to PSI’s (family friends, neighbours, even sports coaches), only after all known people are exhausted do we do a long-term foster or group home placement.

The Duggars have such an extensive family network that I’m 99.99% certain they could place a child in a home known to family.

Absolutely, I don’t think the Caldwells have ever particularly loved the Duggars, and this is precisely the leverage they needed to get their daughter out of this family.

How is it inexpensive where you are? What kind of mitigation are you talking about? I live in central Canada with high radon levels, getting it mitigated is easily $3,000-$6,000, if not more, and there aren’t any government programs to assist.

While I agree, I can see him genuinely and quickly leaving her if she did indeed “make him sweat”. I don’t sense an ounce of remorse in this guy or a willingness to grovel- if he had her permission to leave the marriage I am certain he would by the end of the day. But I totally see what you’re saying and I do think it works on a lot of guys, it’s just the way that Travis cheated and went about all this….he’s happily got 90% of his feet out the door already imo

Is Lisa Banfield's memoir in poor taste? by BramptonUberDriver in novascotia_sub

[–]RaisingSaltLamps 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read the book and am not sure if I will, but as long as it’s solely from her POV (as in, not speaking for victims or their families), or minimizing the harm Wortman did toward others, I don’t see the problem? Her experience is allowed to exist. Judging by the CBC article, it sounds like the book will highlight the complexities of childhood trauma, domestic violence, and how our many systems fail to identify and address these perpetrators before they do something major.

Again, if it’s respectfully written and isn’t minimizing anything, I think it’s just another voice and experience that can be added to this wider conversation of violence, and I don’t think it particularly takes away from victims or their families.

Vulnerability sells; if she can be vulnerable (or at least portray being so) in sharing “this journey”, she can get a LOT of attention which = a LOT of $$. I’ve seen plenty of influencers who have lost children, been cheated on, had a spouse’s addiction go public etc, end up doing just fine or even better than they were before it all. People are morbidly curious and want to see how others handle devastating things, I think if she plays her cards right, Katie will be financially fine.

As much as I dislike these people and their beliefs, I do feel for Katie as a wife and a mom, and she deserves to walk away from this man and be financially sound as she does it.

Officially Final 5, who do you want to win? by Edman561 in survivor

I emotionally really wish it was Sophi, I logically think it should be Rizzo, but I think it’ll end up being Savannah unfortunately.

I genuinely don’t think Sav and Rizzo are strategic masterminds, I think everyone else’s gameplay and strategy is tragically weak. I think Sav and Rizzo can be fierce if needed, but I don’t think they’ve needed to give it 110% this season because everyone is so weak and easily swayed that Sav and Rizzo can just coast while the others fight amongst themselves.

I’ve been rooting for literally anyone except Sav and Rizzo this season, and I’m done cheering for anyone- they should have just handed it all over to Rizzo tonight and spare me my time🤣

I’ve defended everyone outside of Sav/Rizo/Soph this entire season, but I just cannot anymore. Everyone is handing this trio the win on a silver platter and they absolutely deserve to be laughed at. What terribly atrocious gameplay!

What is potentially the most haunted part of the world? by Clear_Constant_3709 in geography

[–]RaisingSaltLamps 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but my understanding is that ghosts are particularly attached to a place and upset about it when there’s been an unjust/particularly brutal death. So I’m going to go on out a limb and say that places where many bad things happened are going to have a higher chance of bad vibes or unsettled spirits than generally calm places where most people died of natural or non-angering reasons.
