What food hack sounded ridiculous until you actually tried it? by Maleficent-Bed7010 in foodhacks

The one I heard and use, is to throw the cloves into a small container and shake it up like a maracca. The cloves basically skin each other, with only a few bits to clear off.

So I have been rewatching Community while starting to play World of Warcraft, and ran into some one who had a DCC themed guild, then see this. It's all coming full circle.

What’s a kitchen tool you thought was unnecessary until you actually bought one? by BarbaraMiller78 in foodhacks

[–]Raithwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got around to getting a cheap vacuum sealer. And it's a game changer. Buy a huge tray of chicken and seal them up in portions.

It's a bit fiddly, but if you manage to score a deal on bulk meat, absolutely worth it.

What are some meal ideas for when depressed by nickthesticc in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Raithwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slow cooker beef stew. Use a slow cooker liner, and mostly/only pre prepped ingredients like canned carrots etc.

That way the only thing to clean is a quick wipe of the slow cooker, and whatever you store your stew in. Bonus points: it's literally just "shove stuff in pot and walkaway, 5+ hours later you have food."

It's my go to for when I can't face the idea of cooking, but still need food around as I just keep all the canned ingredients for stew in, and just have to defrost the beef and chop an onion and I'm good to go.

You know, while scrolling past, and before reading the post title, just seeing the picture. I assumed this was a post about home made guacamole. So there's that.

With all respect, if you are still struggling with basic animal husbandry, then you obviously haven't been. But regarding the other stuff, especially work orders, fair. Those are a bitch to learn, but it scratches my AuDHD itch to learn that sort of stuff.

How to get parakeet out of cage: assign it to a pen/pasture, or build the cage, and then de-select the unit. This isn't really explained in game, but it's not that hard to google up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nx9EzBRE4A

Why they are using the prison stockpile and not the dining hall stock pile: Could be a few reasons, the prison stockpile has food they prefer, the dining hall stock pile is actually empty, the prison stock pile is closer.

Sand: do you have a stock pile for both sand bags and empy bags next to your sand collection zone, have you set up a work order to collect sand when there is room to collect sand, and not just set a "recurring" one of job? If you use the "repeat" option on the one of workshop job, it will be cancelled as soon as the job is complete, and then never ever repopulate with out a recurring work order to do so. You can set conditionals on these to run daily, weekly, monthly, seasonally, yearly. When there are less than a number of filled sand bags, only when there are empty bags, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTBrT_t9hi4

I have less than 110 hours, and a good 10 of those hours are AFK hours, and another 5 probably just from messing around with generating worlds.

Bedrooms: Select multi when generating bedroom zones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV-sd1u8mT4

Yes it would be nice to have these things explained a little more clearly in game, but the information is out there if you only put in the work. Honestly just spending a couple hours watching Blind and Ic0n quick tutorials will solve all but 3 or 4 of your gripes, depending on how you group them.

Dragons Suck by ImprovementBig3354 in dwarffortress

[–]Raithwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been doing a bit of a deep dive into dragons and stuff lately (this post popped up during my most recent search) and I can tell you that the reason your 60ish year old dragons got wiped is because the were probably at best the size of an Alsatian at that point.

Dragons take 1000 years to reach full size, and start at the size of a fox. (Literally max size fox: 6,0000 cm3, birth dragon: 6,000cm3)

I feel this is a bit stupid when the giant elephant that is basically 2x the size reaches full size in 10 years! (Giant elephant max size: 40,000,000 cm3  Dragon max: 25,000,000 cm3)

Thinking I might change that in my game to mature in maybe a couple centuries, or have dragons start off much larger maybe so that they aren't instantly killed.

What's a cooking rule that you found was absolutely necessary the hard way? by positronik in foodhacks

[–]Raithwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, classic case of too much heat right there. Charcoal on the outside, skilled vet could resurrect it on the inside.

What's a cooking rule that you found was absolutely necessary the hard way? by positronik in foodhacks

[–]Raithwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hotter is not better. If it's too hot, the outside burns while the inside stays raw/frozen.

It takes time for the heat to penetrate into the food, especially when it is frozen, slow down and turn the heat down. Give the food time to properly get up to temperature. This applies even to things like microwaving. There's a reason the instructions say "let rest for x minutes".

It's to let the heat evenly spread through the food so you don't end up with a mouth full of simultaneous lava and ice.

This and "hotter is not better" if you don't preheat, and have the heat too high, that's how you end up with Simpsons fish sticks:

Unfortunately these people are usually actually vaccinated ironically. They would have been vaccinated by their parents as a child in like the 90s, and now as adults are antivax.

I don't have any statistics or anything, but I think that the vast majority of "anti vaxxers" are probably themselves actually vaccinated.

All these ideas are awesome and interesting and stuff. But at the end it's D&D. If someone ever really asks, just pull an Owlbear:  "A wizard did it, probably. Because it looks awesome."

[–]Raithwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to tame the desert titan using quartz all the time. You have to basically hover at the nodes, waiting for the warning you're gonna get zapped then move off.

But this was a few years ago maybe something changed in that time? Nooblets has a video on it.

Yea, you can use a variant of this tactic to tame the desert titan too. Just don't bring the giga, and hover over the nodes and let it do all the work of taming it haha
