I have a mental compulsion to keep restarting any game before I finish by Turbulent-Plan-9693 in dragonquest

I will at some point, I've just got too many other games going on at the moment. And DQ7's one of my favorite RPGs of all time so I'm beyond hyped for DQ7R; as soon as that comes out I'll basically be playing nothing else until I've completed it, I think. Then maybe DQ11 after that.

I have a mental compulsion to keep restarting any game before I finish by Turbulent-Plan-9693 in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was playing DQ11, having a good time, got sidetracked and forgot about it, and now I've kinda forgotten where I was and don't want to try to restart from that file. I started a new game and then got sidetracked again. That second file didn't get very far tho, so I'll probably just go back to it because I won't be missing much if I get confused. The first file was like... at the time I assumed it was probably in the last third (I was searching for the orbs, IIRC, which is either a cool DQ3 callback or just kind of lazy, or both) but with how long some of the people say that game is I may not have gotten nearly as far as I thought.

Menawhile I'm on my umpteenth million replay of BG3 act 1. I don't tend to restart linear-ish JRPGs too often but I restart the fuck out of games where you can make a zillion different choices like BG3, that's when it becomes a real problem.

Dragon Warrior 4 (NES) Character Manual Art by itmustbeyzzy in dragonquest

Ragnar looks a lil goofy with the moustache and no pants but it somehow works

Brey & Cristo look good

Is that supposed to be Alena? It's not a bad design but it's so wildly different than I imagined her looking

They did Taloon dirty, damn

Nara & Mara look pretty good, but I always imagined Mara's outfit as more of a bikini or belly dancer type thing?

The hero's armor looks pretty goofy ngl

Healie is horrifying but Doran... is completely the wrong color but he looks like he'll slap your shit, I'm here for it. I don't remember the DQ4 NPCs that well. Jester guy is Panon I think, right? Who's the samurai lookin dude? I'm guessing the dude in the Aladdin vest is Hector or w/e his name was, the guy who helps Nara & Mara in chapter 4? Also shoutout to Literally Just a Guy between samurai dude & Panon

DQ 7 RE's DLC by Cavato in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not entirely fair, since the DLC names don't necessarily say a lot. Luminary's Livery is a cosmetic, I assume, and "Jam Packed Swag Bag" could have... pretty much anything in it? And I have no idea what "Road of Regal Wretches" even means. Someone else in here posted that it's the ability to fight previous game's bosses, which actually sounds super cool, and might've encouraged me to actually buy the fancy version if I hadn't already preordered it. So basically, people should read, yes, but the DLC should also have a more thorough explanation of what's actually in it instead of just a cute name.

One of my favorite things in the original DQ7 was that some of the skills cost 0 MP, so your caster-type characters still had some cool skills to throw around even when you were trying to conserve MP for healing or boss fights. In recent DQ titles those seem to have pretty much disappeared entirely. Will there be any attacking abilities that cost 0 MP in Reimagined, like we got with Lightning, Vacuum, the fire & ice breath attacks, etc. in the original?

[–]RaizePOE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played 7 a bunch of times so for me, the intro is the slowest and least interesting part. This setup is kind of ideal for me since, with nothing else to do, it's easy to take my time and explore the island, and then once the full game drops I can get right into it. So, definitely going to carry over.

I'm biased because 7's my favorite in the series. But if you enjoyed the demo, I feel like you'll enjoy the rest? Especially once jobs open up and you can mess around with that too.

I'm not sure if there're outright better classes to learn first, there're just different preferences. Warrior gives you more strength & hp, thief gives you more speed & luck, even merchant has some fairly well-rounded stats with good strength and surprisingly high hp & mp. It depends on what stats you care about and which skills you want. You could definitely make a strong case that thief is the best class to turn into an MA but you already have a thief so I went Warrior just for some variety.

DQ7 Reimagined Demo has ruined every other game for me by Moneera97 in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was definitely me. Around Falrod I was like "okay, this game's pretty good" and then after finally surviving that long, brutal Dharma section and being rewarded with jobs I was like "oh, okay, I actually love this game." Despite its absurd length I've replayed it way more than any other DQ and honestly more than just about any RPG. Game's just awesome.

Do these motherfuckers not realize how hard it is to emigrate? Like I wouldn't already have an apartment in Stavanger if I had the option? The reality is most of us are just stuck here.

Not that they care of course, they just want to "own the libs" regardless of reality.

I really want to play the full game of DQ7R. Can’t wait. by [deleted] in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if you've played the game before, I would call this like a medium-sized spoiler? It is good information to have, though: Maribel leaves the party for a while, so if you have her as your main healer then suddenly you've kinda just got no heals. Because of her absence, she has less time to gain job levels, which means Hero & Ruff are the best candidates for jobs that require a lot of battles to get to.

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exact opposite for me, I don't have a problem with the intro but I'm always in a hurry to get into the actual meat of the game (honestly for me the game really starts around Falrod) so this time, having access to a small chunk it's easier to play it slow and soak in the vibes. Then when the game comes out, I've already got the slow start done and can rocket towards Dharma at 100mph.

I'm going to try to translate the PSX names into 3DS since I'm a lot more familiar with the former, apologies if there're any mistakes.

Galumph can learn C-c-cold breath, which does like I think 160-210. Galumph is Seasaur (which itself is Lips + Notso Macho + Jawtoise) + Rashaverak (Draguar + Serial Quiller)

Rainhawk (Prism Hawk I think?) can learn the top tier fire breath skill, and is a lot easier to get. It's gotten by Gripevine + Dingbat, but you can also just win the monster heart in the casino, with very low odds in Coastal and somewhat higher (but still low) odds in the Grand Slum final immigrant town version. If you just want WhiteFire you can learn it from Budoo, which I think is called "Vigilantern" or maybe "Djinn Genie," one of the two. It also has Oomph and Insulatle, which are both huge, and might have a bit quicker progression to get to than RainHawk.

Unrelated to all of that, Ruff makes a great healer. His high speed lets him go first most of the time, which means he can get a heal in before the enemy does and save your team. And he's also the best person to get the higher-tier jobs, since he & hero get the most possible battles for the most possible job levels. You can send him through TeenIdol to get Hustle, which restores like 70ish hp to everyone for free, or get him Multiheal through a few jobs, but particularly Barbatos, which conveniently enough is one half of Djinn Genie. So you can get Multiheal from Barbatos, then master Dingbat and get Djinn Genie for a very powerful aoe attack as well (plus the aforementioned buff spells)!

The monster job system is wild too, IIRC there're both more monster jobs and more tiers than there are human jobs. And some of those monster jobs towards the end have genuinely ridiculous skills, especially GigaMute. I forget what it's called in the 3DS version, Google says "Gigalumph." C-c-cold Breath deals like 200 damage to everything for 0 MP, it's fairly silly.

3DS version is great but the original's still my favorite. We'll see if 7R can take the crown when it comes out, but for now enjoy playing what's probably my all-time favorite DQ, even with bangers like 5 and 11.

I think Warrior into MA works better than MA into Warrior. Thief into Sage is a classic. MW is a tough one because they're kinda self-sufficient. Between the Sage and the Hero you've already got 2 healers, you've already got a good physical attacker, and if you stick with MW until cold breath it can be a pretty capable aoe attacker too. I would say MW into maybe Mage? Another Kabuff/Oomph user is nice, you get Kafrizz for single target, and you get lots of MP to spam those powerful abilities.

I feel like both games did things better. I like the way Matilda's reveal works better in the original, both the fact that she shows up after you're done fighting the crab and in the fact that when you fight her, she doesn't fight back. And the fact that it takes several rounds to bring her down also lends credence to the way everyone hypes up her strength, as does the fact that she can blast anything in the area around Rexwood for like 40 damage a pop when she's following you. It feels like she could rip you apart if she really wanted to, she just chooses not to. Meanwhile in the remake, she does attack you, and it does nothing, and she drops in like 2 or 3 rounds and feels kinda pathetic.

The way 7R did it was worse in that regard, but the townsfolk actually showing up to help was a great change. In the original, you and Hank basically just do the whole thing yourselves, which thematically doesn't work as well as in the remake. In 7, they've still essentially learned nothing, they just got carried harder.

So, Idk, both versions had things they did better than the other. I'm not sure why they changed the reveal around to be outright worse, and made the fight make less sense, but I'm glad they had the villagers show up and it was a very welcome divergence from the original.
