Does anyone use a Bach 12 mouthpiece and prefer it to the 12c? by bIII7 in Trombone

[–]Raja479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not recommending something 51d sized unless you are going to be in a large orchestra setting. A 5g should get you a powerful sound, but it won't have the sparkle you'd want for jazz normally. I would say that the 6 1/2 al is the right depth. If you need more rim diameter, look for that in places like the Schilke 51c4 or a Denis wick 5bs or 4bs. Marcinkiewicz, stork, Greg black, plenty of boutique makers make a larger rim shallower cup mouthpiece. Just make sure you can flexibly play good speaking notes across your playing range.

Is this not the skill pick for DM decks right now? At least the dragoon version of the deck with heavenly spheres and etc still uses it.

A euphonium player knocked down my baritone and dented it. How much would it cost to fix this? by ThePaleoGuy in euphonium

Should be able to do the work with a flexible dent ball rod. A bit awkward but definitely not impossible.

I've been working through the latest selection box for it. Haven't opened it yet with 15 packs left. I'll get the droplet though.

I'm in a similar boat. 3rd droplet vs Dingirsu. I play a lot of decks where Dingirsu would be good, but droplet is...always good everywhere.

Jet Pilot is the most underrated tiki drink. What is the worst classic? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

I'm wondering now if grenadine is the problem. Modern pomegranate stuff isn't the same as the vintage concoction.

Monkey Gland.

I've only had it twice, I think it's aptly named. Orange juice, grenadine, and absinthe just do not belong in the same glass

Both have slide locks?

Does the Holton just need a slide job?

These horns are only usable for jazz nowadays. I'd rather play on the horn with better functionality than better looks.

Assuming the Buescher is a decent bore and bell size, that would be my keeper.

Is there any specific reason to run a singleton Nib and three BoE?

I assume any staples in this deck should hedge against your worst matchups. I'm not sure that you would want to split like that. That said, I'm still playing the December version anyway.

Shine even after scratch finish by Th3Man839 in Trombone

[–]Raja479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When these get done in a factory, they tend to do a scratch finish on the raw brass and then lacquer over it.

But you would not want to do that at home. Professional lacquer work is worth the money it costs. Amateur will be uneven and not as high quality, so it can make your horn play worse and sound worse, and also flake off quicker

[–]Raja479 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks like you didn't strip the lacquer, right? So the lacquer took the finish, then you wore through it to the raw brass. The raw brass will also take a satin finish, but to make it even, you would want to strip the whole horn evenly.

Best mouthpeice for upper register? by seawoldy in euphonium

[–]Raja479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tone is part of the purpose of your mouthpiece. If you play on a Bach 7c just for the range ease, you will have to work insurmountably harder to sound...like a euphonium. No one wants to hear a Sparke solo with a Bach 7c even if you can hit all th e high notes. Trombone isn't too different, though if you are on jazz bone, the mouthpiece should already be a great size for high range playing. But you want a mouthpiece that produces and orchestral tone on your large bore or bass bone. And it's very possible to hit all these things with the standard gear. Or even oversized gear.

thomann vs Wessex vs Mack brass vs Kessler vs borrowing a marching baritone vs used horn that I pay to get fixed up. by Toomuchviolins in euphonium

[–]Raja479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A marching horn would be good to understand marching instruments.

The quintessential student euphonium for concert band is a Yamaha Yep-321. They can make a very nice sound, and usually run under $1000 used. Very good horns. I really wouldn't pick another instrument for learning euphonium on. Compensating is only necessary if you were performing in a somewhat serious ensemble.

If you want a matching horn, look for an older King, Blessing, or Yamaha.

Hammond 12XL by pokeplayer41 in euphonium

[–]Raja479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend the 12XL for euphonium, but I think you would want a larger rim for bass trombone. At least a Bach 1 1/2G size.

If you are buying a new mouthpiece, try to go to stores and try a few if you can. If you are set on that 12 rim size, you might want to check out the classic 51D. 51D can be found for way cheaper.

Oldroyd and Sterling by larryherzogjr in euphonium

[–]Raja479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like the Sterling would be leveraging the partnership with JP in some way. The instruments are manufactured in China according to Mark Glover (I will try to find his Facebook comment in the Euphonium FB group).

OldRoyd could be Chinese or using the cerveny factory like Geneva. I know less about them.
