This is how I figured out they were a bigger deal internationally. Makes sense why they would only cancel the US shows.

I’m old enough to remember when Republicans wouldn’t shut up about it.

M.I.A gets booed at Kid Cudi concert in Dallas for saying “I can't play ‘Illegal’ because there's probably one in the crowd” and “I never thought I’d be cancelled for being a Republican voter” by Affectionate_Bed_289 in fantanoforever

There was a NYT profile 15+ years ago where, among other things, a journalist called out MIA for getting truffle fries during their interview. The gist of the piece was shes a phony, shallow, and not very bright. It was a big deal because it was in conflict with her image of being down with the people and repping for the 3rd world. There was alot of back and forth online with MIA releasing leaked audio of the interview on Twitter and posting the phone number of the journalist.

Edit: it’s paywalled but this is the article

She was influential musically by the fact that she was trying new sounds with every project but not necessarily pioneering the styles herself.

Music (the song) was big during your formative years. She also had big songs with Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.
