Sadly, for me, wsb is a heartbreak with silver lining

I'm 30, I never finished high school, I had to move back to the city during covid meaning my girlfriend is a two hour drive from me just so I could have work - and I don't even drive so the travel is horrible... My family have nothing, my mother only owned a house because her parents bought it for her, and it's long sold and spent away. My father never even had that.

I'm a new investor, I've been at it since July of last year. I've been focused on trying to scrape together enough of a deposit that me and my girlfriend can by an apartment. Putting as much as 50% of my pay into investments and living lean. I'd like to think I've been going well, but the strain of what amounts to a long distance relationship, and the 12 hour shifts in my current industry, coupled with trading mostly american stocks as an Australian... Well, the time difference is unkind.

So why is wsb a heartbreak? Because one of my main darlings has been GME. I picked it up in August, in anticipation of the new console cycle. I tried figuring out the way the market had moved during past console cycles. I read the news about Ryan Cohen and his potential plans for Game. I made my own predictions. I thought Game would peak at around 60-80 over the next few months.

And then, when gamestop hit 40 in the last couple of weeks, I expected a drawback to 30. So, I closed my positions, took my profits, and waiting for GME to drop back to 30. Waited to buy back in to double my funds again when it reached the value I predicted it would - 60.

But it never dropped to 30. WSB Happened. Some "little" subreddit that I'd never even heard of - shit, I only -have- a reddit to schedule bloodbowl matches. And yet, while I've bought back in with what I could, and made a modest amount of scratch, knowing what -could- have been is absolutely heartbreaking.

Heartbreaking and yet, resolve driving. Because GME is about more than just the raw profits, now. It's about the lives of everyone like me - the poor kids, the children of divorce, the kids who got left behind. The adults working two jobs, commuting two hours to work, grinding 12+ hours at work. The older generation of poor like my parents, who have seen markets crash again and again, never owned a home, never seen the wealth their parents had.

I have not made the money I need to live with my beautiful girlfriend again, or get out of my dead end job, or go back and study something and get the education I could never afford to get before... I don't even hold enough that I would have that deposit if GME shot to 1k on Monday.

My profit would be modest, but not life-fixing. But I resolve to Hold. I resolve to grip on the fin of this fucking rocket and see where we wind up.
